Worst Comic Book ever??
Aug 9, 2002 09:18 AM
In light of the recent DK2 thread coupled with my recent receipt of Prez #1 in the mail.

I thought it would be neat to start a thread addressing the worst books/series/stories we have ever read.

My votes are for PREZ #1, Adventures of Ford Fairlane #1 and Brute Force #1. If any of you have read these, you know what I am talking about. C'mon, who really cares about a book based on an 18 year old running for President. B-O-R-I-N-G. And talk about wordy. This thing has more text than WAR and PEACE.

And then we go onto Ford Fairlane. Nuff said...and then Brute Force. A story about an animal superhero team with a dorky looking dolphin right on the cover. Gimme a break.

Anyway...list em and describe em so we can laugh at em...

Have FUN!!!!

If there has ever been anything worse than Marvel's the "Human Fly", from the late 70's, I'd be hard put to think of it!! They somehow managed to create a 19 issue run about some pitiful ditz who made a career out of standing stiffly on top of a commercial jet with a pole stuck up his butt to keep him upright and from not blowing away. Whooooo

Wow did anyone ever read Super-Pro. A loser fooball has been who gets a super powered football uniform that random scientist #47 made. Using football themed weapons.
It still haunts me.

By the way it was a Marvel title from the late 80's early
90's boom. Anything could get a comic then.

P.S. In reference to the beginning of the thread I liked DK2.

Used to collect Thunderbolts, Gary.
Seen some of the new covers (what are they trying to make it look like? Tabloids? Magazine Ads?) & flipped through some pages. It's now another book I can't even recognize anymore.

Always loved series dedicated to villains - but they never seem to have lasting power.

Now feel urge to make another list:
The Joker (DC)
Secret Society of Super-Villains (DC)
Suicide Squad (DC - Mostly villains)
HitMan (DC - he was a villain, right?)
Harely Quinn (DC)
Marvel Super-Villain Team Up (Marvel - was that the title?)
Thunderbolts (Marvel)
Regulators (Image - cancelled after 3 issues)

Now what villain series did I miss?

Suicide Squad was decent.

It was just Super-Villain Team-Up. I just sold my #1 of that series.

I have one of those Archie Chirstian comics. I think it's called The Good Son. That would get my vote.

My nomination is for a Marvel one shot called St. Francis of Assisi, Brother of the Universe. It at least has to get the award for corniest subtitle.

Blue Beetle #60! Worst Golden Age book I have ever read. Bad art, worse plotting, and inane dialogue, totally horrible. No wonder it was the last issue in the run!

Image of the Beast, an underground/indepencdent one-shot comic based on the book of the same title. Horrible stuff and downright nasty. For sheer depravity just for the sake of depravity, the Faust comics by Vigil is a series to avoid at all costs. The cover showing the spread eagle lady pleasuring herself with a bloody razor was an absolute all-time low for comics. The whole run was like something out of one of of Saddam Hussein's wet dreams. Nasty, sick crapola.

You can pretty much take your pick of some of those corny independent comics in the 80's and certainly the Human Fly and Capt. Marvel from MF are truly horrible in both story and art. However, when I think of the worst comic I have ever read, (and I have read almost 20,0000) two come to mind.
The first is Defenders #30 in which the whole team is defeated by a Broadway reject with tuxedo tails. Dr. Strange and company took over the whole world but were laid low by a guy and his gadgets... yeah, right!!!! Terrible in concept and execution.. really laughable.

Probably even worse was Dell's Neutro from 1967. Really has to be seen to be believed. The art looks like it was done by a grade schooler during an earthquake. Proportions change from panel to panel with little detail in the art. Some panels are messily inked and others look like they were barely inked at all. Now for the really bad part! Although this was Neutro's only appearance (thank God)the pacing is choppy and the dialogue banal. There are huuuuuge leaps in logic that span from the highly improbable to the downright impossible. I could go on and on but I'm sure you have the idea by now.

The Defenders was a particularly bad title. Picking the worst one is sooooo hard! I think its worst issue was the one in which a cosmic-powered alien with a huge head reduces Magneto and a few other heavies into babies....then he leaves Earth never to be seen again! At the end of the comic Magneto and the Blob and others are just crying babies sitting on the floor! The end!!?? Let's work on the OVERALL continuity a little more next time, guys! Another comic title I HATED was the whole run of the Magneto title. This thing made The Joker title look good by comparison! (Thank GOD I never spent a penny of my own money on this junk.) It was indeed the real Magneto we all love to hate, but thanks to a homoerotic makeover they gave him flowing white locks of hair, reduced his age so that he could have been on Dawson's Creek, and they made him a really good guy who was just a little confused about his almost-killed-the-world-50-times-so-far past. Every one of those issues that I've seen was a stinker destined for the these-will-never-sell long boxes. How great comic creators like Rand Holmes and Harvey Pekar have to beg borrow and steal to get their stuff into print while junk like the above mentioned comics justifies killing a tree to some corporate editorial flunky at Marvel is absolutely beyond me.

I actually thought Doom 2099 was a pretty decent series and I think I might have read the first 20 or so issues. I'd recommend fishing them out of the quarter bin.

Spiderman 2099 wasn't so bad either, although at some point it started getting crummy and I didn't think it was worth continuing buying them out of the quarter bin. (Most of these 2099 titles, other than the fancy cover #1s, found themselves in the quarter bin within a month or two of their release)

Ravage 2099 -- i don't think i read past issue 2 or 3. same with punisher 2099.

X-Men 2099 was o.k., but I lost interest pretty quickly.

i'm pretty sure i couldn't get past issue 1 of hulk 2099.

I guess my problem with picking an all time terrible book is that I usually can't get the first page or two of something if it's really that bad.
