Anyone with google mail issues

Oct 31, 2009 10:24 AM
For 24 hours now, I cannot get to google mail.
Either by mail,google,com.
from a bookmark
or google.com
And clicking on mail.
This is on all pc's on my router and using all browsers.

It stays on waiting for google mail
or says page not loading

I can go to google.com search and click on all links (and go there) except mail.

NOW, yesterday in an eMail form Charter cable, they claimed faster uploads and downloads can be obtained
by unplugging the modem for 30 seconds.

That is when I started having the google eMail issue.
I called Charter, they said to also unplug the router to restart it.
But in no way
would their upgrade cause any site problem.

Any suggestions?

Google mail was really slow starting up at about 9am edt this morning ... but it came up eventually and ran fine for the 5 minutes that I was on.

Since Google Search was working fine, I'd guess that Google Mail is the issue. Maybe the Mail folks are/were doing some fine tuning.

Just took a laptop to two other locations, went to google mail as it should.
So it has to be my ip addy.
I am thinking it is a Charter upgrade issue, they sat not possible.

Have you tried signing in to other sites, like eBay or Facebook?

Just seeing if you can connect to other secure pages ... or is the issue only with connecting to Gmail .

Here are a couple of things to try:

1. Google Mail asks that you try this direct link for logging in: Link

2. Go to Google and search on: Google Mail Help
Then click on Gmail Help. The Troubleshooting section has a number of known issues and fixes.
If none fit or fix your issue, then there is a place to report the problem. I was surprised at some of the known issues.

You are not the only one who can't access Gmail.

Check the Popular Discussions link on Gmails Forums page: Link

Looks like a DSL service in Chicago did something to it's subscribers on October 20. A San Francisco service had a similiar issue. There was even an issue with some AT&T accounts.

All is ok now.
The problem had to be with Charters upgrade, since I was able to access my google mail to 2 wifi spots in town.
Just not from my own service.

If can't get my mail on one machine, the other works fine.

If I click the HTML version I can get on.

Max,

What browser and version is on the one needing the HTML ? Are cookies and java enabled?
-----------
GMail Help notes say: " If you use a browser other than those listed (below), you'll be automatically directed to the basic HTML view of Gmail. ... Basic HTML view works with the following browsers, as well as many others: * IE 4.0+ , * Netscape 4.07+ , * Opera 6.03+
.
Fully supported browsers:
Google Chrome, Firefox 2.0+, IE 6.0+ (IE 7.0 is recommended), and Safari 3.0

Regardless of your browser type, you must have cookies enabled to use Gmail. If your browser supports it, please also enable JavaScript." But another Gmail page says that JavaScript must be enabled.
-------
.
Maybe GMail has been making some behind the scenes changes for supporting that new Android system. Just a guess, but it seems like a number of folks are having GMail sign in issues recently.

Not that it answers the question, but why do we all seem to be checking our gmail using a browser?
I understand if you're out and about that might be the only way to do it, but if you're accessing it from a home computer or your laptop etc it'd be easier to use pop3 and a standard email program such as Outlook or Thunderbird.
There's been a couple of times when I've logged in via my browser to either check the spam folder or retrieve a really old email and experienced an oddity trying to log in, but I don't do that very often and I can't recall a time when my email program has failed to retrieve my gmail mail.

I like the filtering and safety of web based email.

To the best of my knowledge there's no filtering you have to forego in order to use pop3, unless you're referring to searching through old mail etc, but any decent email program should be able to do just as good a job of it. The gmail spam filter still does it's thing so there's no difference there.

I can't really see how you're more likely to be safer viewing your mail via an email program than you'd be viewing it via your browser, and it seems a much more convenient way to do it to me.... none of that tedious logging in all the time and waiting for pages to load just to check something in one email which you forgot to write down etc.

But anyway.... in the always happy to learn department.... in what way does viewing you mail via a browser make it more secure? (security which AVG can't match while it scans and inserts an ad in your email? :))
