"input not supported" message on moniter. Help anyone?

Nov 28, 2008 5:08 AM
Good morning I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I had a great day with family. BUT, while my granddaughter was here she asked if she could use my computer. She is a smart kid and Ive never had any problems before so I said sure.I dont know what she did but all I get now on the screen which is blank is a message in the center that says "INPUT NOT SUPPORTED" I tried shutting everything down. No luck. I then shut it off and totally unhooked the moniter and then reconnected it and started it up again no luck. Suggestions anyone? Or is my moniter toast? TIA Susan

"input not supported" message on moniter. Help anyone?

Nov 28, 2008 8:10 AM
It sounds like she might have changed either the refresh rate or the resolution to something which the monitor isn't able to display.
Is it a CRT or an LCD?
When you first start the computer do you see the usual BIOS messages or manufacturer logo etc on the screen before the "input not supported message" comes up?

If so try tapping F8 as you turn the computer on to see if the display will display while Windows is in safe mode. If it does.... and I'm not 100% on this... I think when you go into display properties you can change the resolution and refresh rate to one of the options Windows gives you, reboot in normal mode and then change them to how you'd normally set them.

Hook another [preferably CRT] monitor to it
If you can get to windows go to the Device Manager
Uninstall all listed monitors
Turn it off & hook your LCD back up .

Is the cable or cables connected to the computer/monitor?

Maybe you have two the two types and it only uses one and it was pulled out?

Or if not that perhaps clearing the cmos would help?

Or check, go through the "menu" on the monitor itself and see if its set right, maybe it was changed on that end?

You tried clearing the cmos?

If not try it and see if it helps, will set the computer to "fail safe" so you should get the picture back.

Need to move a jumper or remove the little battery on the motherboard with it unplugged for a few seconds to do it.

If you don't know how but want to try it just ask and one of us will post clear instructions on how to do so.

Posting your computers make/model should prove helpful to do so.

When you tapped F8 while it was starting did you get a screen with a list of options?

If you got options hitting F8 as it was starting did you try "start computer using last known good configuration"? (words to that effect).
Did F8 work? you try safe mode? did you even see a list of options?

If not, again we'll need your make/model, should be fairly easy to get it back.

Alrighty, Let's open that puppy up.

Unplug the compter
After it's unplugged push the om button & hold it a couple of seconds
Remove the side cover
The first thing to check is if you have onboard video or a video card.
Does the monitor cable attach to a "add-in" card ?
[One that is installed in a slot on the lower part of the motherboard]
If it does make sure the card is fully seated
[press down on eith end a little]

Look around on the motherboard
You should see a battery about the size of a quarter.
[looks like a oversize watch battery]
You need to remove the battery & wait a couple of minutes then put it back on
Try the computer & see if you get anything .

"input not supported" message on moniter. Help anyone?

Nov 29, 2008 4:43 PM
Ok I'm looking over the manual, thinking on it I don't think clearing the cmos will help, more likely a OS/video device setting change causing it.

You said nothing happen hitting F8 as it started/

Try F5, don't tap to fast, just tap.....tap.....tap....tap as it starts.

You have to catch it just right, miss it restart and try again. Should be F8 but try F5 if no luck with 8.

Turn it on, as it starts slowly tap the F5 key, see if you get the list of options. If you get then pick safe mode. Go to the video properties and set it to the display type/resolution for the monitor you have.

Let us know how you make out, with that while I try to find something more concrete in the 200 plus page manual for the thing.

manual download PDF,

Link

Cmos jumper location shown on page 110-110.

Instructions to clear cmos on page 196-197

If you can't get to safe mode it may be worth a try, safe mode should be what you need though.

Yea I was kinda thinking that way too, heck try the clear cmos thing, it certainly won't hurt anything if it doesn't work.

I don't see your granddaughter messing with any of that, more apt to change the video settings via the OS. But who da heck can say for sure with these kids now days! :^O
