Re: "Wireless networks available"

Can I log onto someone else's router/network?
Do they know if I do?

If the network is unsecured, meaning that no password or encryption key is required, then yes you could log on to the network and use their internet bandwidth. Since the owner of the network didn't take the affirmative step of securing their network, you aren't doing anything illegal by using it.

They wouldn't be able to find out if you're using it anyways. After all, if someone isn't even smart enough to enable basic WEP security, the odds that they're going to be smart enough to run the router's MAC address accessing report and then be able to interpret that information to mean an unauthorized person is using their network is slim to none.

If the network is secured, you could still hack into it if you had the time and inclination, however if discovered, this could lead to criminal charges for unauthorized access to a computer network, theft of services, etc.

Of course there are ways to cloak your presence, to reduce your chances of getting caught. However, if all you're interested in is internet access, it would be much cheaper and easier to sign up for your own DSL or cable internet service.

Yes you can if they do not set a password. I do it all the time. So you basically get free internet *shrug* you should try it some times.

You had been looking for an XP Laptop.

Did you find one?

I take my laptop to the laundromat me they have free wireless.

Much more fun than watching the clothing spin around.

Are you sure about that? I'd think it be theft of services either way.

Happen to have a link to something supporting that by chance?

Lots of people, myself included, deliberately leave their WiFi network open to enable travellers and friends to use it. In that case nobody is committing a crime. (Of course, if you try to hog all my bandwidth I will notice and block your MAC address.) When I travel, I look for other open networks and use those rather than paying for access at Starbucks etc. What goes around comes around. :-)

maha-sam-atman-1987,
I wish I lived next door to you. I could use some more bandwidth. ;)

I tend to think of the security like you would on a door to your house. Just because your door is unlocked, doesn't mean you can "Come on in"

In reference to the original poster's question.....
Windows, or the vendor's third party wireless software usually lets you set up preferred networks so that your laptop will connect to them in (obviously) a preferred order.

I can't find a way to get Windows to do it on the wireless PC here and I don't have the Netgear software running to check, but is there any way to do the opposite of setting up preferred networks? By that I mean networks you'll never want to connect to, which you'd want the PC to ignore and most importantly of all, networks which you want to be able to instruct Windows to stop bothering you by constantly telling you they're there.

I don't recall ever seeing that as an option, no I see no way in windows itself either.
I haven't had my netgear card in a computer for quite a while now so I couldn't remember if it did either so I installed it a minute, I wanted to see if it worked with windows 7 at the same time, I gotta "Wg311 V3", the software for it does not allow for that type of option either. It also doesn't have the "preferred" list window's XP uses, just a manual pick the network you want from the drop down list of available networks kinda deal.

I'll change it over and let windows 7 handle the wireless connection, see if it somehow offers something XP and Netgear does not in that respect.

So, if you surf on your neighbours wireless network, can your neighbour tell that you're doing it? Or did it?

Like the Gekko said: "It's funny that you ask, because actually ...." Norton Symantec has ads about a product that does just that.
I'd guess it tells who, when , and maybe how much bandwidth, .. .but not the exact content.
.
. Like Dirty Harry said: "So you've got to ask yourself..." Are my neighbors paranoid ?
.
... Take this with a pinch, or a pound, of salt depending on who your neighbors are.
.
Happy surfing.

Yes they can tell but they won't know it was you.
