Re: "Wireless networks available"

So, if you surf on your neighbours wireless network, can your neighbour tell that you're doing it? Or did it?

Yes they can tell but they won't know it was you.

Well they might be able to figure out it was you, depends on how much they know about you, and what you "named" the computer.

If your computers network name includes parts of or all of your first or last name or pet's name for example, yea they will know it was you.

The routers log displays the computers network name that connected to it as well as the mac address of the device.

A friend of mine found an unsecured network near where he works, and as he has a bit of spare time he found himself using it. A little later he found the router's password hadn't been changed, so he logged into it and changed it's QOS setting to give himself bandwidth priority. Then he changed the default router password.

I know it was naughty but given how slack the person who owned it was with security it was kind of funny when he told me about it. They eventually discovered his cunning plan and must have worked out how to reset the router in order to apply some wireless security, so I guess in exchange for some bandwidth he helped them to understand they should be more security conscious.

Dash, re: ...networks you'll never want to connect to ... "
.
If you run Vista, then ask your friend about netsh .
.
Vista's netsh command line utility blocks connections to other wireless networks.
i.e. preventing your pc from connecting to those pesky neighboring open networks.
I'm guessing that Win 7 has the same or maybe better wlan options.
