Fruitcake

I hope somebody can help. About 5 years ago I came across a  for a fruitcake recipe from Paul Deen. I think it was in Goodhousekeeping. She gave recipes for 5 different fruitcakes. I went to get the magazine the other day and could not find it. I checked the Paula Deen site and nothing. I also looked at Goodhousekeeping and could not find it. There was one there, but it was not the one I want. This was a very good cake. My husband even liked it. I know, I should have written it down, but I thought I would just keep the whole mahazine.

This isn't what you're looking for, but the best fruitcake I ever tasted is baked by the monks at Holy Cross Abbey near Berryville, Va.  Simply to die for, but rather expensive.

Can you be a bit more specific?  Were there any special attributes to her cake(s) that made it different from others?

I found it. It got mixed up with some other books in the bookcase. It might not be that special, it's just that it was simple to use, and you can add any mixture of fruit and nuts as long as it equals 12 cups. One year I added dried apples and apple brandy. Once I added dried cherries and cherry brandy. I guess you can tell it has brandy in it. It is really very good. Thanks for your help.

Sure. I found it in Paula Deen's November-December 2008 magazine.   1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, softened. 2 cups sugar. 6 large eggs. 1 teaspoon vanilla. 3/4 cup of bourbon, divided. 4 cups sifted all-purpose flour, divided. 2 teaspoons baking powder. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional ). 8 cups candied fruit mix. 4 cups chopped pecans. I use any cannied fruit I like. We like cherries so I use more of them. Mix what you like, as long as it is 12 cups total. In a large bowl beat butter and sugar till fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each one. Beat in vanilla and 1/2 cup of bourbon. In a medium bowl combine 3 cups of flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Gradually add to butter mixture beating till combined. In a large bowl mix fruit, pecans 1 cup of flour and toss to combine. Add to butter mixture and stir till combined. Pour into 2 or 3 loaf pans that have been greased and the bottom lined with a couple of pieces of parchment paper. I use brown paper bags cut to fit the bottom of the pans. Also greese the paper. You can make it in a 10 inch tube pan. I also make a couple in the small loaf pans for gifts. Bake at 275 for about 2hours and 30 minutes. It depends on the pans that you use. A wooden pick should come out clean. Remove ans pour remaining 1/2 cup bourbon over hot cake. Cover with a dish towel and cool on a wire rack. Remove from pan and wrap in plastick wrap for up to 1 week. I wrap it and then put it in a plastic bag. I put it in the freezer till I want to use it. If you don't want to use bourbon you can use fruit juice. I have to hide this from my husband, or I would not have any left for Christmas. It is really not that hard to make.

Thanks!  I LOVE fruit cake, but only home made, although I'm hearing that there are better commercial ones available these days.  I had an aunt who made a fruit cake that was out of this world, but she never wrote it down.  :(
