Getting ready for Fall

Sep 4, 2009 5:28 PM
Here in western Washington we're just around the corner from Fall. This 3-day weekend we will have a high temperature in the low 60ies, rain and it will be somewhat windy.

This time of year I always stock up on things so that if the weather turns bad, I don't have to go out in it unless I want to.

So far I have stored cans of tomato sauce, cream of mushroom soup, tomato soup, boxes of dry onion soup mix, bags of spaghetti, bags of other pasta, a big box of rice, several cans of chicken breast, several cans of corned beef hash, 5-pound frozen bags of peas, broccoli, green beans, stir fry veggies, big bag of frozen bean and cheese burritos, frozen 1-lb. packages of hamburger, a big bag of white sugar, a big bag of brown sugar, a big bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips, a big bag of pecans, several bags of chili mix, a big bag of dry dog food for the doggie boys, several sizes of batteries, candles, a big supply of paper towels and t. p. and on and on.

Do any of you stock up for this time of year? If so, what do you stock up on that I haven't thought of?

I always feel great this time of year if I have all my extra food and supplies stored away. I can't hardly wait for Fall. It's my favorite time of year.

Not really...since I have to drag myself to work M-F. I work in town...19 miles from where I live and I go to the store once a week...sometimes not quite that often. If I run out of anything in between..oh well...

If you want to, when you're at the store once a week you can just pick up an extra couple of items each week that you can store until needed. You could easily build up your stock that way. That's the way I do it.

Thanks impossibledream for the shopping tips. That's what I did last year. I'd stock up on oatmeal and beans and peanut butter. It does sound like you're ready for a hard winter. If all else fails, I can survive on peanut butter and beans. As far as opening cans go if the power goes out, I have my handy dandy hand held can opener. Never been to Washington State. I do have a Washington Presidential Coin First Day Cover from there. Well I got to get to the store and get some medicine for my chronic cough which started last night. Maybe Listerine might help if it's a cold.

Thanks laddieboyblue. During my next shopping trip I will pick up a supply of peanut butter and beans.

As for your cold, I would suggest Cold-Eeze. That stuff really works. I don't get many colds, but when I do, I take Cold-Eeze tablets. My colds usually last 2 1/2 days now and I don't get sore throats, sneezing, or any other symptoms except that I feel tired. If you go by the instructions for Cold-Eeze then you will be amazed at the results. I always have it around now.

DH and I work at 2 different locations of a major supermarket. So needless to say we can always buy food when we need it. Between the 2 of us there is always at least one of us at a supermarket for 365 days of the year.

I understand we had the blizzard of 1978 when I was 8 years old and the entire State shut down. Major roads were impassable. But in all honesty we have changed a lot since then, our plowing equipment is much better. The worst thing that could happen is maybe a day stuck at home waiting for clearing.

I do stock up on a few things for the loss of electricity. That could happen anytime.

I hate the Fall. It is the season of death and when the killing frost arrives I cry my eyes out. My 2 favorite months of the year are January and February when all the vegetation is dead and I find it wonderfully miraculous and inspiring to see birds and squirrels in the frozen white icy winterland. Then spring comes and I stick my fingers in the defrosted earth to deeply inhale the smell of dirt. Ahhh, that is joyous.

The only thing I'll be stocking up on is the unpasteurized apple cider to let naturally go hard.

Fall is my most favorite season. I hate summer. I'm not a hot weather girl. In fall it cools down and rains a lot. It's windy fairly often. The trees turn fantastic colors. Deers are extra hungry so I feed them. No more wasps in the fall. When the electricity goes out the first time, I don't reset the clocks again for months. We've had our electricity off for as long as 4 1/2 days before. We've had snow and ice in the winter enough to be stuck at home for over a week. We've had massive floods nearby that affects travel. I live in a rural area. I just feel better having a supply of everything I might need for these situations in case they happen this year. And this year, if the swine flu gets really bad, I may stay at home a lot more than normal anyway.

Stocking up on food and supplies means I don't have to go out unless I want to. It's just my personal choice that makes sense to me.

Thanks theimpossibledream I'll check it out. If it has a lot of antihistamine I may not be able to use it because of my blood pressure. I've tried Clariton, you know the non drowsy formula, but that puts me out like a light and have some antihistamines. My throat really gets sore when I sneeze. My doctor gave me a prescription for a cough syrup.

The active ingredient is Zincum Gluconicum. Inactive ingredients are corn syrup, glycine, natural favors and sucrose. No artificial colors or preservatives. So it looks okay for you. If you do use it, keep using it for two days after you think you are better. If not, the cold may come back a little. I have never taken anything that worked better for a cold.

I lived in Virginia for 4 years before returning to western Washington and I hated the hot and humid summers over there. We are blue tarp campers and love the fall weather best. Feels like fall here in Oak Harbor today; rainy, windy and coooooolllll!
I don't really stock up on stuff, just keep plenty of beer in the garage fridge. :^O

rro2000: I live in Monroe. It feels like fall today here, too. Plenty of beer in the garage sounds good. In a jam you can drink your beer and forget everything else! It's rainy, windy and cool here, too. I'm still waiting for the promised thunder and lightening. I guess I'm weird to stock up for the colder months. Perhaps I'm part bear.

Impossible and RRO, it is definately fall in Western Wa. I'm inTacoma and thinking an ark looks pretty good right now.:O.

Impossible, if it weren't for the fact that you are in Monroe, I'd think one of us was following the other around the store, stocking up ;).

Fall is also my favorite time of year. My birthday is this month. I like to think that it kicks off the holiday season.

Sept-my birthday
Oct-- Halloween
Nov--Thanksgiving
Dec--Christmas (or your personal version)
Jan--New Years
Feb--Valentines Day

:^O:^O
Stay dry, Debbie
