Getting ready for Fall

Sep 4, 2009 5:28 PM
Here in western Washington we're just around the corner from Fall. This 3-day weekend we will have a high temperature in the low 60ies, rain and it will be somewhat windy.

This time of year I always stock up on things so that if the weather turns bad, I don't have to go out in it unless I want to.

So far I have stored cans of tomato sauce, cream of mushroom soup, tomato soup, boxes of dry onion soup mix, bags of spaghetti, bags of other pasta, a big box of rice, several cans of chicken breast, several cans of corned beef hash, 5-pound frozen bags of peas, broccoli, green beans, stir fry veggies, big bag of frozen bean and cheese burritos, frozen 1-lb. packages of hamburger, a big bag of white sugar, a big bag of brown sugar, a big bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips, a big bag of pecans, several bags of chili mix, a big bag of dry dog food for the doggie boys, several sizes of batteries, candles, a big supply of paper towels and t. p. and on and on.

Do any of you stock up for this time of year? If so, what do you stock up on that I haven't thought of?

I always feel great this time of year if I have all my extra food and supplies stored away. I can't hardly wait for Fall. It's my favorite time of year.

debbiedo: I also live in western WA. This morning it was 36 degrees F at 7:30 a.m. I can finally put on long pants and sweaters. Yay. It's hot cocoa time!

I'm telling you - the flannels go on the bed tomorrow! I can't believe how fast the weather has turned. Of course, we've had rain the past several days and that makes it colder, too.

I pulled out a warm turtleneck sweater this morning and I was glad I did. I met a friend for lunch and I felt nice and toasty.

I've been growing a couple of pumpkin vines. I've gotten three pumpkins to grow pretty big. My only trouble is that my big dog Hank has ripped two of them off the vine, carried them over to the deck in the back yard and eaten a nice, big hole in the side of them. If he eats the really big pumpkin that is left, then I am going to turn him into a pumpkin. Then, he wouldn't be able to bark at the deer when they come by, either.

Ah! Yes. It is flannel sheet time. I have mine in the washing machine right now to freshen them before they go on the bed tonight. Pretty soon it will be time for the down comforter.

Although the leaves are starting to turn here in Denver, it's still AC weather - 86 today. It did turn cold on the day before fall officially began and for a few days afterwards, so we took the opportunity this weekend to plant a bunch of flower bulbs for spring. Other than that, I've done no fall preparations.

LOL at the dog munching on your pumpkins.

That is pretty much our weather here too dipipi.
Like Mac said, that is the cutest dog face. I miss him and he wasn't even mine.

That is a really good idea about keeping your pantry stocked impossible. They are advising us on the news to do that too around here with this God Forsaken Swine Flu. Four teens in the area have already died from it =(

I planted all of my mum's outside. They look so good. I feel like I am cheating on my Geranium's b/c they still look so good too!

Hi, Barb, Hi Tahiti! Thank you for remembering Minky! We miss Minky's cranky, sweet, finicky, loving ways and irresistible face, too.

We had mums in planters, but they're gone now. I've become fascinated by ornamental grasses, but don't want them invading the lawn. So I've got them in planters along with Mexican sage and some wild-looking flowers. If I could have landscaping that looked like the side of any random highway in western Colorado, I'd be delighted!

impossible, I always looked better in fall/winter clothes. They cover more of the blinding white skin that I have.:^O. I don't like hot weather (anything over 75 degrees is a waste). I like it cooler.

I love this area. I can't imagine myself living anywhere else that is not bound by mts, salt water, fresh water. I was born and raised here, 3rd generation Washingtonian.

Thinking of spending Thanksgiving in a cabin at Mt.Rainier. That would be so cool.

debbiedo: I'm like you about the fall/winterclothes and my blinding white skin. I don't like weather over 75 degrees either. When it turns cooler, dark and rainy outside it relaxes me. Every year when summer gets here I start counting down the days until Fall. You are so lucky to have been born and raised here. I think spending Thanksgiving in a cabin at Mt. Rainiers sounds great. Living here is like being on vacation all the time.

Today was a perfect fall day. Around 71 degrees, windy, boy was it windy, gusts to 18 - 20 mph. Leaves were falling and the squirrels were romping everywhere. Yes you can tell it's fall For a while there I thought we were going to lose power since the lights flickered. Some people in the area did lose power because of the wind. Should be good sleeping down to 45 tonight

Today, like the last 3 days has been in the 40 degree temps--windy--rainy--chilly, and gloomy

and I LOVE it--the leaves have pretty much fallen off the trees surrounding our "treehouse" and now we have our gorgeous river view back--we still see the fishermen guys down in our river catching the last of the CoHo Salmon---

We have ordered 8 cords of wood and we are waiting for it to be delivered --when that happens we will be getting lots of exercise just stacking it all! LOL
