Cardinalrules and Zepher

Oct 7, 2009 6:53 AM
Cardinal,

I read your post on the AB. I lost a cat from complications from hemobartenella. The Docycycline pill that the vet gave Fred got stuck in his throat. It caused an ulcer, which formed scar tissue closing his throat off. He was slowly starving. I did everything in my power to save him. One time I put the pill in a syringe and when I pushed the air out it squirted on my kitchen ceiling and ate the paint off. :O

Please if you are using this pill ask for the liquid form.

Prayers are being sent.

Nancy that's a great idea to warn her over this. I remember what you went through with Fred.

Hi Nancy,
I just now saw this. I do want to say again that I'm so very sorry you lost Fred in such a horrible way.

Zeph's getting baytril (vet's drug of choice), iron and a steroid. I'm also giving him herbal stuff in his wet food to help boost his immune system in the hopes that we won't have to deal with this again. From what the vet has said, his immune system is going to sporadically turn on him from time to time, so I want to see if we can eradicate the problem, not just treat these symptoms.

As hard as it is to pill a cat, I'm using pill pockets. Zeph is crazy about them and will take anything so long as it's in them.

Thank you also for letting me know about the pills. It's something to watch for whenever I have to pill them.

It must have brought shudders to you when you read about this. It's not something you "get over". There are just some things that haunt you for the rest of your life.

I just wasn't sure if my post would get buried on the AB and I wanted to let you know. Fred did not like to be pilled and it was a battle each time.

Thanks about Fred. I loved him to pieces. The ones that have gone on to the bridge are never far from our hearts.

I have the three (cat) brats now. They are a trip. :)

I am so glad Zepher is getting better and I apologize for freaking out on you.

Nancy, you certainly don't need to apologize. The way I see it, it's a testament to how much you loved your baby. The same way that I love mine. I actually start crying when I think of how close we came with Zephyr. I just lost Webster in August and I got both of them at the same time 5 years ago, right after I lost Sun.

I'm extremely fortunate that he loves his pill pockets, otherwise I'm sure it would be a fight to pill him. I've got him trained as far as the liquid iron goes, he takes it, I give him half a pill pocket as a treat. He's a muscular 13 pounds and I know he could put up a good tussle if he wanted to, so I'm glad we have a compatible arrangement.

Let me see if I have one in photobucket. My computer crashed last May and I lost all my pictures again.

Everyone is doing well. I've been putting lysine into their food and it seems to really be helping. I had two with colds and they're both better now.

Thank you for asking.

It helps to boost the immune system. Since Zeph has an autoimmune disorder, that's exactly what he needs help with.

Ok good. Can that be given on a short-term basis to just up an animal's immunity? Can it be given to puppies too?

I've been giving it to my dogs. You can give it to kittens, so I would think you can give it to pups too. The dosage for a cat/dog is 500 mg a day for medical need, every 2 days for maintenance. Half tab for toy dogs or kittens. I crush mine and sprinkle it in their wet food.

I would think you can give it short term, but if possible the maintenance dose is best. For teeny girl, you can probably give her a 1/4 pill as maintenance.

Thanks Sweety! I'm going to get her some. I asked because she has 2 more shots to go before she's aborbed enough to fight off parvo. I worry about her getting it.

She has grown so much it's scary. So is the fact she's getting food aggressive. Lol..Funny now but I need to fix it abit. Maybe feed her small amounts from my hand. The Hubby got down on the floor when she was eating her last meal of the day abit ago. He acted like he was going to eat her food. She growled at him.
