Spinoff - What do you like to EAT when the weather turns COOL?

Sep 27, 2009 4:32 AM
This is a spinoff thread from noahiam's.
At the end of hers she asked the question. It got kinda buried, so...

Of course chilli is a favorite of ours too. I like mine with LOTS of cheddar cheese on top. Mine's ground beef and red beans, with just a little kick. I'm a wimp remember?

Another thing I make only when it's cool is sweet spiced pecans. I don't know why I make them only in the fall/winter. I guess its the spices and the fact that they make wonderful party food. Easy to transport and even though they are easy squeeezy lemon pleasy to make, folks are VERY impressed!

Here's the Spiced Cranberry Sauce recipe from Sharlotte's word game post. Verrry EZ to make and verrry impressive to your family and friends. Serve in an old wine glass or any pretty tall, clear glass. Garnish with a sprig of fresh herb and 3 reserved raw berries on each glass.

Even cranberry sauce haters love it! Really!
I guess it's because it's very sweet rather than tart.

SPICED CRANBERRY SAUCE

1 bag fresh cranberries
1 3/4 cups sugar
1/3 cup water
1/8 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground cloves
1/8 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground allspice
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Wash berries, pick out 6 light colored ones for garnish and place the rest in a saucepan with the water, the sugar and the salt. Cover and bring to a boil and cook 8-10 minutes, or until the skins have burst, whichever comes first.

Remove from the heat and stir in the spices. Pour into the wine glasses right away (or other serving dish, I recommend clear, so guests can admire the beautiful color). It will set up and become thicker as it cools. Cool before serving.

Garnish with the fresh herb and the 3 reserved cranberries to resemble a sprig of holly.

IF there is any leftover, use it as a condiment on the sandwiches tomorrow! YUMMMMM!!!

Wal mart is supposed to be having turkeys for 40 cents a pound any day now. Watch their ads.

Thanks for the head's up sharlotte! I think that line deserves it's own post, so no one misses it! Please post it for everyone.

Let me see if I can find out when this sale is supposed to start.

Daughter in law thinks that it started today. I'm leary of posting this info in it's own thread because it might get pulled and I don't want to get pinked. :(

GOOD chicken broth is not a brand, just high quality. I normally make my own in the winter, when all of the herbs in the garden are covered with leaves, but no snow yet. I dig and find them naturally dried. A good spin in the salad spinner after washing and they are perfect to add to broth. If you buy it from a store, look for salt free or low sodium types. I have found that the fat content really doesn't matter, at least for flavor.

Can I ask all of you to please not shop at Walmart? I know their prices are great, but my DH is an out of work (not by his choice) certified crane operator, and the parent company is known for using non-union workers and unsafe working enviroments. Just a personal request.

My local country market has Turkey for $1.09 per lb. every day. If it is a 12 lb turkey, that is only a little over $12 per turkey. Right now, many stores run specials, so please review other options first. A local store here is giving cash for cluckers (lol). I already have $6 towards a turkey, and I only shop there for milk, fresh bread, etc.

Sorry if I am out of line, but I cannot shop there with good conscience.

Oh! I forgot about that possibility.
I guess we are supposed to buy our frozen turkeys right here on Ebay! :^O

Nancy,

You can certainly ask, but you're fighting an up-a-huge-hill battle. Wallys in entrenched in our society and in this economy, people are having to save every dime.

I'm very sorry about your DH. Did he get laid off by Walmart? He may have to look for work in another field, like so many of us. I never in a million jillion years thought I'd be driving a bus full of screaming meemies at my age! Yet here I am, at less than minimum wage too. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

Every meager dollar I make there (and here) is a dollar less that I have to take out of savings to live on.

sharlotte -
Any word on the 40 cent turkeys?

We do not have a Sunday paper available here, unless we drive all the way to town to pick one up.

Maybe I'll get one tomorrow.

No, Olive. I don't get the city paper so I'll never see the ad. DIL works for the local grocery store and she wasn't for sure when the WM sale started. I'll just be getting my turkeys here locally even though they will cost more. :) We have a nice little grocery store that is part of a small chain. It's an Apple Market store.

My DH, Tony, did not work for Wally world. He has worked for the same crane company since he was 19. He now is number four as far as length of time with the company. He has 14 years that he worked for them with only sporatic slow times.

I am not trying to toot his horn, he would be the last person to want that. He is number 3 on the list of people back to work, from a company that 2 years ago employed 60 (my low guess) operators.

It is a bad thing, and I appreciate the hugs. Believe me, we have learned to stretch a dollar. And looking at Sharlotte's siggy, we have more to be thankful for every day.

Yep, an uphill battle, but if all of the Walmarts were built by union workers, at least in our area...

I appreciate the consideration, and please look for other store coupons online as well (we have no Sunday paper in the boonies either).

Oh, and if you want a 40 cent Turkey, we have about 20 here. All it takes is buying a license from the state and the cost of a bullet.

Otherwise, I'll go to my locally owned grocer.

:) @ Nancy. We have one in our freezer that our son killed last spring. We'll probably cook it in the smoker or deep fry it.

We live in a town of less than 2000 people. It is 30 miles from the nearest larger small town and 60 miles from a city. With my physical problems, I don't drive out of town much. So I buy most everything right here at the local grocery store.

Whatever you do, wherever you shop, I hope that each and every one of you have a truly blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving. :-x
