does every generation try to rebuy the things they once had?

Feb 12, 2003 6:18 PM
I think so, my son who is 15 collects Hot Wheel cars. When he was younger (not that long ago) I bought him HW cars and of course he removed them from the package and played with them. Now he wouldn't even think of opening a package. Now he saves his $ to buy the cars mint on card from the 80's that he has opened.
My DH is another story, he's always chasing that dream of finding his old Baseball cards & comic books. They were sold years ago at a garage sale.

I don't. I like the things that my mother, grandmother etc had. The dolls I had growing up never meant as much to me as the IMPCO walker I used to drool over when I was little (that now sits proudly with all her sisters I have bought for her to play with).

I started collecting by buying the dolls that I had when I was a child. Then it moved on to the dolls that I remember my 3 older sister's playing with. My Mom will turn 80 this year and I have been eyeing the dolls at doll shows that she has told me she played with but those were mostly baby doll type and I am not into those yet but I am sure I will be buying some in the future because that is just how it is with doll lovers I guess.

I've always wondered what the current generation will want to buy back. They don't keep anything long enough now to really become attached to it, it seems!

We are a very throw-away society!

I still have pretty much everything from when I was a kid, and have 'replaced' the things I wanted but never got. Things from my childhood era are mostly boring to me--toys & dolls really went downhill during the 70's. I collect things from decades before my time.

yep, mike. I am the same way.

You know, now that I'm older, and have a baby of my own- those baby alives just do not appeal to me anymore! I don't really understand the attraction to them I once had when I was little. (maybe it's because now I HAVE to change poopie diapers?)

I bought all three of my girls dolls of my past for Christmas this year. The baby alive my 14 year old wanted when they reissued them in the early 90's. Well she played with it twice and it is now on the shelf.
The only dolls of my youth that I have repurchased are some of the mattel beans and for no other reason than they make me smile when I look at them;)

NL, Baby Alive is alot more fun when you play 'the game' that I've mentioned here before, LOL! Also, it was always neat to see just how much that doll could eat at one time. And, when you run out of the packaged food, she'll eat just about anything you can mush up. That made for some true works of modern abstract art (corn, glue, dirt, etc. all swirled together & served to poor Baby Alive). LOL!

Wouldn't it be great to see some cinema verite ads for Baby Alive showing real children playing "feed Baby Alive your best swill and watch her explode"?

Personally I dont really want to buy back my childhood (I really dont think theres much of it I would want to relive unless I could change it)as for the toys my mom chucked, they would have probably ended up on ebay by now.
I like some things much older than me, I have a few dolls, compos are my favorite, I also have a collection of fountain pens I love the history behind them and really no 2 are alike because the nib shapes by the way the owner holds the pen. I love researching history on stuff (which means I know a bunch of totally useless info but it was sure fun reading up on it. I guess I was one of those nerds that said stuff like "did you know....)
both the pens and the dolls are fun because both can need work or at least some cleaning.

Sure,
we buy what we had, what we didn't have, and whatever we want....We just BUY!

AND another question...does anyone ever really SELL what they bought from their childhood. That's my problem. I'm running out of room.....

i love truly ancient dolls- n other antiquities. i have quite a few dolls from my childhood, but don't seek them out - although i'm tempted to replace my sweet sue. my daughter got rid of most of hers (70's dolls - just not that interesting, aside from her few gotz dolls which the neighbor kids now like- my grandbabies don't care for dolls, though my 3 yr old grandson likes barbie's shapeliness- he was breast fed toooo long, i think!) daughter doesn't like any of the dolls too much- guess i'm gonna have to wait for a greatgrandbaby to treasure the dolls

There are a few dolls from my childhood that I really like and would buy... but, for the most part, I love the dolls that were before the ones I had to play with.
