Green Ear Treatment

Apr 20, 2005 12:57 PM
I will have to add pics later, but let me describe my vintage Barbie green ear treatment. (This doesn't really work on the Mod dolls...no one has found a good solution for their green ear problems.)

First I remove the earrings if they are still in. I take a q-tip and dip it in rubbing alcohol, squeeze out any excess and then clean off the green area. I then remove the head (there are various techniques for this, too. Some heads need to be warmed before removal.) and clean off the area inside as well. This will stop any more spread of the green.

Buy some CLR (which stands for Calcium Lime Rust). It is a cleaning product usually available in the cleaning aisle of grocery and other stores. I pour some of the CLR into the cap, grab a cotton ball and a pair of tweezers. I pull a bit of the cotton ball off with the tweezers, dunk it in the CLR and then place it on top of the effected area, usually right at the earring hole. (I have found if the green is wide spread sometimes you will not need to apply to the whole area, just applying the cotton at the earring hole will somehow help the rest of the green vanish.) Leave the cotton there until it dries, then repeat. You can re-use the same cotton one or two times, but after that you will want to use fresh, as it will work better. I try to keep the CLR out of the hair if at all possible, but if you do get it in there it will not change the hair color like other products. I also try to keep it off the face paint. After prolonged use it MIGHT cause the lips to fade SLIGHTLY. (But nothing like Removzit can cause.) You can cover the face paint with Vaseline to help prevent this.

The key is PATIENCE. Every now and then you will get a doll that degreens in a day or two and think that all dolls will do that. Sadly, they won't. And some will never COMPLETELY degreen. You might be left with what they call a shadow of green. But even so, that is worth it in my book. I do think that some of the green shadow will continue to fade over time after you stop treatment, but there is no guarantee of that.

There is no PERFECT and totally predictable degreening method, but CLR is as close as I have come to one.

The vinyl on Mod dolls is different -- the green ear treatment not only removes the green, it removes the color from the vinyl! So you end up with white patches where the green was. You can supposedly recolor the vinyl with markers. I've never tried it, and I've also heard it doesn't always last. So usually I just figure that green on a Mod doll is permanent.

I'm working on de-greening a Casey right now. About half her head is green. I'm trying to mostly get it out of her face. I'll let you know how it goes. I've already gotten the skin color out! :-p

After cleaning the green inside and out with alcohol and a swab I pull off a small section of cotton ball and saturate it in CLR. I squeeze out the excess and set the cotton ball over the green. I change the cotton when it has dried and reapply CLR. If the green is oozing or looks like the earring hole may be full of green I will soak a piece of thread in CLR. Using a needle with a small eye, I use the eye to push the thread into the hole, just far enough to get the thread inside and then I pull the needle out, leaving the thread in the hole. I leave it in there a day or two and refress as needed. You need to be careful so you will not rip the earring hole so it is a good idea to warm the head up first if you are worried. Sorry, I did not photograph the thread method when I took these pics a couple years ago.

Here is my PT with seeping, oozing green. I used the cotton and thread soaked CLR on her. I also used just the cotton on this Swirl because she just had shadows of green around her ears. After you are satisfied with the results, wash the head to get the CLR off.

Here is the PT relaxing with the CLR treatment.

After a day or two the green is dimishing.

Ater no more than 2 weeks for the Swirl and just a couple days for the PT, here is the final result.

CLR will not work for the mod vinyl. I tried it on this Stacey doll but it did not do a thing. I have not tried any other method on her yet.

Removzit or Oxy10 sometimes works on the pink MOD vinyl, but it'll leave that area bleached out.

I've read the difference is that the pigment on the vintage dolls is INSIDE of the vinyl itself, and the MOD vinyl isn't. If that makes any sense.

The Mod dolls I have tried to degreen (very few) don't even get the green out. It may diminish, but not get removed. I'll post a buncha pics tomorrow. :)

OK, I got tired of treating Casey. Perhaps if I'd been more patient I could have gotten more green out. Anyway, I recolored her and here she is.

Before:

After (she looks a tad less yellow in person):

The yellow is caused by the green I couldn't remove.
