To post your photos on eBay’s discussion boards:

1. Resize your digital photo or image to be under 600 pixels wide, the maximum post width.

Photos over 600 pixels wide will not show the entire image.
For example, a photo 640 pixels wide will be cropped 40 pixels on the right side.
For help with how to resize, see the Help system for your photo program or photo host.
Tutorial on preparing photos for eBay: http://www.isdntek.com/demo/merrypicprep.htm

2. Sign up for an online photo host and follow their instructions to upload your photo.
Some online photo hosts are free, like Photobucket.com or Tinypic.com.
Most have editing functions, so you can also resize the photo after you upload it.

3. On the eBay discussion board, click New Topic or Reply to open a Post box.

4. There are three different ways to post a photo:
    A. Insert/Edit Image

    - Go to your photo host and copy the entire URL or the Direct Link code for the photo.
    - In the eBay Post box, click the tree photo icon (Insert/edit image).
    - Paste the code in the Image URL box and click Insert.

The URL code looks like this:
    http://yourphotohost.com/youraccount/yourphotofilename.jpg

You may have to experiment to find the right code to use from your photo host.
    - In Tinypic, copy the Direct Link for Layouts code.
    - In Picasaweb, click Link and Image Only, then copy the Embed Image code.
    - In Photobucket, copy the Direct Link code.

    Photobucket users:
To find the codes, hover your mouse over a photo to see a code list.
Left-click the code to automatically copy it.

    B. HTML Coding

    - Go to your photo host and copy the entire HTML code for the photo.
    - In the eBay Post box, click the HTML icon (Edit HTML Source).
    - Paste the code in the HTML Source Editor and click Update.

The HTML code looks like this:
    <img src="http://www.yourphotohost.com/youraccount/yourphotofilename.jpg">

    C. Copy/Paste or Drag & Drop Image (this does not work for everyone)

    - Go to your photo host and open the photo to the full-size view (max. 600 pixels).
    - Right-click the image and select Copy.
    - Paste the photo in the eBay Post box.

Drag & drop or copy/paste keyboard shortcuts will not work in all browsers.
Firefox users can drag & drop a photo from the online host to the eBay Post box.

5. Click Preview to check your post, then click Go Back/Edit or Post.

You're welcome to click Reply and use this thread for practice.

Hi ((Tutti)), so good to see you!  See post #206 above, try using the HTML icon to post a photo.

It's the same way we always used to post photos, but now you have to click the HTML icon first, then paste the HTML code for your photo.

The HTML code should look similar to this, with the tag enclosing the full URL (not the shortened link you posted) for your photo:

<img src="http://www.yourphotohost.com/youraccount/yourphotofilename.jpg">

Hi Heatherickmla, you need to first click the HTML icon in the Post box, then paste the HTML code and click Update.  Scroll up to post #206 in this thread to see more recent screen shots.

If you use a pop-up blocker, you may need to temporarily disable it to open the HTML box.  For example, with many programs you can use Ctrl-click to temporarily disable the pop-up blocker:

Hold down the Ctrl key while left-clicking the HTML icon in the eBay Post box.

For mhalb:  Thanks for the test photo to help me figure it out.  Good news is, it's not just you!  :)

After I wrote up the first post of instructions, they reduced the max width limit for posting photos with the tree icon (Insert/edit image) to 400 pixels wide.

Looks like the 400-pixel-wide limit is not working consistently, though.  Sometimes it will post a wider photo over the limit, and sometimes not.

Also, once you get an error message in a Post box, sometimes it lets you post another photo that does meet the limit, and sometimes not.  If you still get the error message after trying again with a smaller photo, just back out to the thread and Reply again to open a new Post box, then post your smaller photo.

Your photo was 419 x 366 pixels, so it was just a little over the width limit for posting with the tree icon.

I reduced the width to 400 px, and could get it to post with the tree icon, but sometimes not if I had not previously tried the wider version in the same Post box and got the error message.

Mhalb, I know you know this already, but this is for others:

You can still post a photo wider than 400 pixels by using the HTML icon with the HTML code (max 600 pixels wide).  Or if it's even wider, use the paperclip to attach the photo.

Thanks Treefern and others. I tried sneaking over to the discussion board for photos but alas they aren't updated for the new doll board so had to come back here and show how dumb I am. lol I don't know why I have such a problem with it but I ran off a copy of your steps so will keep trying.

Sometimes I can go to photo bucket and can change the size but for some reason I can be consistent.  I know it's me but I will keep trying. I didn't grow up using computers (just showed my age) but this seems to be the only place I have this much problem with.

I will keep practicing so if you see my practice just skip. If I get it right I will do it as a regular post. Thanks again

Hi Savannah,

Practice away - that's what this thread is for!  :)

Which method are you trying to use to post a photo?  Maybe I can help.

They've made some changes since I wrote up the first posts of this thread (notice the date is a year ago).  Those changes were documented in later posts in this thread, but you have to read through the whole thread to find them.  (I plan to replace this thread sometime in the next month.)
