Item Specifics Updates in Passenger Vehicles

Mar 14, 2006 3:45 PM
In the next few weeks, we plan to update several of the Item Specifics in the Passenger Vehicle category.

Number of Doors and Interior Color – will no longer be required
Number of Cylinders – renaming “don’t know” to “unspecified”
Vehicle Title – renaming “other” to “unspecified”
Transmission and Vehicle Warranty – adding “unspecified” as an additional choice
Condition – adding “Certified Pre-Owned (CPO)” as an additional choice
Fuel Type – adding this as a new item specific with the following acceptable choices: Biodiesel, CNG, Diesel, Electric, Ethanol-FFV, Gasoline, Hybrid-Electric, Steam, or Other

Item Specifics is an eBay feature that allows sellers to provide additional item details, such as Year, Mileage, Transmission, etc during the selling process. Buyers can then search using these item details in addition to regular Title search and Description Search, thus finding these items more quickly and easily. We believe modifying Item Specifics as outlined above will simplify the selling process. Additionally, the added item specifics of CPO and Fuel Type will enhance finding vehicles of these types easier on eBay Motors.

These Item Specifics modifications will be available within the next few weeks for sellers who list items through the Sell Your Item form, Turbo Lister, Selling Manager Pro, or the API. For these eBay seller tools, this may require downloading an update. If you utilize a 3rd party listing service (e.g., Andale, Auction123, etc.), please contact them to verify that they will offer the Item Specifics modifications in the Passenger Vehicle category.

Don't you know? That stuff takes time.

After all, it is taking how long to change a few words in an e-mail message?....a major project like adding a button ought to be completed sometime in 2009 or so.

You forgot to add "nuclear" as a fuel type. Newer cars are coming with fuel rods and reactors.

Yeah, I'd delete the number of doors too. Instead, I'd be worrried about the details that were listed.

Yeah, who cars about color?

The CPO choice should be restricted to new car dealer franchises since other used car dealers don't have a manufacturer's CPO program available to them.

That's what the inspected checkbox is for. Because as we all know, dealers always inspect their cars before sale. like if the CHECK ENGINE light is on they will open the hood and make sure the engine is still there.

And if the CZECH ENGINE light comes on they know to fill the air filter box with Kolaches so the hamster can have a snack.

I disagree about limiting the CPO condition to new car dealers. I have a car that I bought as a CPO vehicle about 6 months ago. If I want to resell it and it's still covered by the factory CPO warranty and that warranty is transferable I would think that this would mean something to a potential buyer.

I suppose I could just state these details in the listing but if this condition field is searchable I would think my car should be included.

The whole CPO inspection is great, but I think for most consumers it simply means that the car comes with a longer warranty that's good at any of that brand's dealers. The inspection is nice but I'm sure the top technician in the dealership didn't perform it and the real piece of mind comes from the warranty coverage, not the fact that someone looked at the car and shampooed the carpets.

I'm also glad that the fuel type was added. For cars for which this is important it should help with searching for them on the site. Try to find a Diesel pickup truck... people describe them in a lot of different ways.

When the listing is for a pickup truck, there really should be a couple more items required to be specified: cab type ( regular, extended, quad ) and bed length ( long bed, short bed ). I've tried to write good searches to find a four-wheel drive longbed regular cab diesel. I have to exclude a zillion terms, and I still get a bunch of listings I don't need to see.

Thanks for the information, the pickup specifics you mention do sound very useful. We have more updates coming and I'll add these to the list for consideration.

The small challenge is that the way our item specifics function there isn't a way to make them contingent on the vehicle type. In other words, these attributes couldn't be surfaced only for vehicles for which they would be useful, they would need to be there for all vehicles.

The number of doors attributes might help with the extended cab/crew cab vs. regular cab search (at least for newer trucks that all seem to have rear doors), but bed length I don't have an easy answer for in terms of searching.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

Dog,

In response to your question about the report this listing function I asked around and it appears that this function should be live to the site very soon (though I don't have an exact ETA, sorry).

If you want to see how it looks you can check out a vehicle listing on our Australian site (www.ebay.com.au). You'll see a "report this item" link on the bottom of the view-item pages.

Discountlex,

There IS a salvage title option. When listing a passenger vehicle the seller has an option to list the title as clear, salvage, or other (now changing to clear, salvage, or unspecified). This attribute has been available for at least 3 years.

If this isn't what you are referring to or have a better suggestion, please let me know.
