New EbayMotors Search Tutorial Thread

New EBM Search Tutorial Dicussion

I thought I'd start this so we can talk about contructive ways to search and find what we want on the New EBM.

Keep your negative comments off this thread (there's plenty more topics for that). Those of us that plan to stay need to work with what we have. Period.

If you're having trouble completing your searches, post what you want to search and we'll see if we can find a good way to make it work.

Here's my thoughts:

1) Use the Main Search Bar at the Top of EbayMotors for searching; not the "What are you looking for?" box. It's too confusing and there are too many dropdowns.

2) Unless you are search for parts or a full-size vehicle, search using the model name (don't search Chevrolet when you want Camaro) but search Chevrolet if you want Biscayne

3) If your are looking for a specific part that you know fits multiple years, try it use the two-digit year of the first or last applicable year (ie if you want a 1949-54 Ford Clutch, search 49 Ford Clutch or 54 Ford Clutch) as these will most likely be in the title; but maybe not the middle years.

4) Make sure you are searching for the commonly used term. Is it a door rubber or a door gasket or a door seal? Perform a generic search on the alternatives without a model/year to see the number of returns to find out how most sellers are listing them

5) Start your searches generic and move more and more detailed to narrow your search. If you are looking for a Generator for a 1956-61 Corvette, searching on Corvette Generator may narrow the results enought without entering any years.

6) Spelling Counts. Make sure you're searching for a Distributor not a Distributer!!!

7) Avoid search words that can be presented in many different ways (eg A/C vs AC vs Air-Conditioning vs Air Conditioning vs Air-Cond, etc)

8) Don't forget you can search on title AND description. If you know the part number, a description search may pick it up if a seller has included that information; especially in the new item specifics fields

I would add:

9) If you're searching for something you know will most likely be an eBay Motors item, do your search from the eBay Motors site rather than from the main eBay site. The filters and matching logic is different between the two sites, so you'll get much more accurate results from the Motors site.

For example, Mr. Ed's example brings up 5 resutls on Core, but 75 results on Motors.

Sure, it would be better if both gave the same results, but there are wacky technical reasons that is harder to accomplish than it should be. And in the meantime, there's no sense asking the department store cashier where to find a specific auto part when you know the guy in the automotive section will be more familiar with what you're looking for, right?

Agreed - especially sine we all know a lot features do not work between the 2 sites......why should search??

Besides if I'm looking for parts for old Monarch........I don't want books on butterflies!!!

How many times have you tried to relist an EbayMotors item and realized that you were logged into regular MyEbay and therefore couldn't complete the relist???

Not the best economy to be job hunting in, Mr. Ed. But I think I may have finally found something great in the non-profit sector. Don't want to jinx myself, but ask me again in two weeks. :)

Yep,
Good thread Roblins.
I like you sell for the most part on here. My main concerns are how now to key word more effective plus fight the dreaded best match.

Ive started useing loss leaders and or free shipping on some light weight items to get to one of the 1st 2 or 3 pages of listings and perhaps that will drive more traffic through the store.

As you well know I am not a fan of {The new motors} but wont turn this into a beat on ebay post.

My main concern is the average joe auto parts buyer who may only get on here a couple times per month to search for and buy parts.

The guys who spend more time in the shop working than on the PC trying to figure out what has happend to their old beloved eBay motors.
I know parts can be found with this new system if you want to put in the time learing how to operate it with all the drop downs , best match ect.
The big question to me is .............. will those bidders / buyers do the same.
The jury is still out.

Blame it on the economy or the new motors who knows but the runaway bidding is now rare for me any how.

On the old motors I used to get crazy bidding on certain items that would make you sit there and grin. But since the new motors took effect I see not near as much of that.
Good for the buyer I am sure that can weed their way through all this mumbo jumbo , but not so good for the sellers who have lost possible bidders because they can not locate the parts they are hunting and get in the bidding game.

Like I said that also could be the economy time will tell.

From what I can see Key wording is now more important than ever that and making into the best match top 3 pages some place.

Good thread , I admire your positive outlook.

Thanks for the positive thoughts....

I haven't done a lot to combat best match. I'm not a fan offering free shipping just to increase listing fees and FVFs for the chance to have higher placement. I think a better strategy is to not list items that there are already too many of in core. I find that w/o free shipping the order of listings under best match does not change much regardless of raised, standard or lowered status.

I just don't have the slow loading problems that people complain about and I access Ebay on 3 different computers; miles apart from each other.

Hi bizzarrt,

Not sure if you are already aware of it, but you can do a search where you *don't* want a keyword with the minus (-) operator.

For your cordless phone search, maybe this would help?
Link
This way, you can do a search in both title and description, but make sure that neither title or description has "answering" or "battery". You can even further constrain the search by clicking on the 5.8GHz or 2.4GHz phones in the left-side navigation to eliminate batteries if you know what you want.

Hi bizzart,

Yes, description means the item description.

This is used a lot for parts buyer/sellers because often times sellers cannot list all the make/model/years that a part fits in the title. But they do put the full fitment list in the description, so searching title and description can really help find what you are looking for.

The downside is that it can definitely take longer to run your searches if you include searching descriptions.

Thanks,
checkers

Plus's and minus's, circles with arrows and paragraphs on the back explaining the circles and arrows.
Sounds like an Arlo Guthrie song I heard once. Well more than once, in fact alot more than once.

What about the normal guy just looking for a part for his rod. He doesn't have the time for all that nonsense.

I'll go back to the group "w" bench now

Where is this "common" search technique knowledge listed on Ebay for the average moron?

Yes - I want you to show me a link to a tutorial guide for searching on Ebay with "new" search experience with BestMatch that outlines these types of queries. If you can't post a link, guess what your next priority is?!!?

AND

If there IS a tutorial, wouldn't you think this would be a good link on both the EBAY and EBAYMOTORS Home Pages? All you read here is thread after thread of search problems and slow-loading pages.

Hi roblinsgarage,

This page might prove helpful for search modifiers and operators: Link

And that is a great idea to make the link to this page readily available from the Home page. We will be looking in to that.

Bob,
Do you people really think for a minute that buyers are going to read that before they search.

Lets go thru this slowly, stay with me on this........

search needs to be simple, you type in what your looking for, And it magically appears.
