New EbayMotors Search Tutorial Thread

New EBM Search Tutorial Dicussion

I thought I'd start this so we can talk about contructive ways to search and find what we want on the New EBM.

Keep your negative comments off this thread (there's plenty more topics for that). Those of us that plan to stay need to work with what we have. Period.

If you're having trouble completing your searches, post what you want to search and we'll see if we can find a good way to make it work.

Here's my thoughts:

1) Use the Main Search Bar at the Top of EbayMotors for searching; not the "What are you looking for?" box. It's too confusing and there are too many dropdowns.

2) Unless you are search for parts or a full-size vehicle, search using the model name (don't search Chevrolet when you want Camaro) but search Chevrolet if you want Biscayne

3) If your are looking for a specific part that you know fits multiple years, try it use the two-digit year of the first or last applicable year (ie if you want a 1949-54 Ford Clutch, search 49 Ford Clutch or 54 Ford Clutch) as these will most likely be in the title; but maybe not the middle years.

4) Make sure you are searching for the commonly used term. Is it a door rubber or a door gasket or a door seal? Perform a generic search on the alternatives without a model/year to see the number of returns to find out how most sellers are listing them

5) Start your searches generic and move more and more detailed to narrow your search. If you are looking for a Generator for a 1956-61 Corvette, searching on Corvette Generator may narrow the results enought without entering any years.

6) Spelling Counts. Make sure you're searching for a Distributor not a Distributer!!!

7) Avoid search words that can be presented in many different ways (eg A/C vs AC vs Air-Conditioning vs Air Conditioning vs Air-Cond, etc)

8) Don't forget you can search on title AND description. If you know the part number, a description search may pick it up if a seller has included that information; especially in the new item specifics fields

Hi operator6,

Can you tell me what browser you are using? I have heard this reported from a few others, but I have been unable to personally reproduce it with firefox3 or IE7. I've been looking at results, scrolling down, viewing an item, and then hitting my 'back' button. Is this what you're doing as well?

I definitely want to get this fixed for you, I just need to be able to show the tech team what's going on.

Thanks,

"I just don't have the slow loading problems that people complain about and I access Ebay on 3 different computers; miles apart from each other."

You must be on magic computers then because it seems as if everyone else is having lag problems.Lucky you.

I have even questioned whether it is because I'm using different service providers in Canada than you guys would in the US..........wondering if I'm riding different infrastructure than you.... But my office laptop connects to a server in Great Valley, PA........so that hypothesis does not necessarily hold water.

I'm not convinced that the complaints of slowness is entirely an Ebay issue.

What ebay should be doing is logging the complaints of slowness and logging:

browser
connection type
service provider / level
city / state / country

This would identify if there are regional issues, or problems with certain providers or just what.

I have a PC running a 3 gig AMD processor with 2 gig of ram, I'm running XP Pro with all the updates and I just upgraded to the latest version of Firefox. I'm doing exactly what you describe, just hitting the back button to go back to the previous page. I've been an ebay member since 1998 and have never had this problem until this round of ebay upgrades or some might say downgrades.

I only have the problem with the new search, if the option to opt out is present and I switch back I have no problems. Someone suggested that I open all new pages in a new window but this requires several extra keystrokes and mouse clicks.

The problem now effects anytime I do a view sellers other auctions, or their store items. It also plagues me when I go to "my ebay" and look at auctions I'm watching, everytime I return back to my ebay from viewing an individual item I'm slammed back to the top of the page. If I'm watching it at the time I can see that the page comes up then jumps to where I was previously then instantly goes to the top of the page.

Another thing that's interesting is that it only occurs on the search page, if I return to an individual item that I left from the bottom of the page, it returns exactly where I left it.

Thanks...

Hi operator6,

Unfortunately I still can't get it to jump for me, but I'm going to report this anyways and see if the tech team can see what you're seeing.

Thanks,

what is "current results" for a category?

example

go to core ebay
search the word: dragster
then click link on left for motors
next page comes up, with motors and the category current results....I want ALL of motors...and can not find anywhere in ANY tutorial WTH "current results" is.

I'm sure not look for last weeks or last months results! If I was, I'd be looking in "completed"

and I'm sure ALL ebay motors users have the time to try and find the tutorial pages, read them, learn them ,,,,most likely they will just STOP using ebay when they can't navigate it quick and easy!

gutterhanger2000, it looks like the "current results" is there to let you refine the search you're already doing, rather than starting over.

In the old days, there were two search boxes. One at the very top of the page for doing a brand new search, and one just above the search results for the search you're already in the middle of. That made it easy to add or remove keywords and other search options and keep the context of the current search.

When these two search boxes were combined into one, however, it got wacky. Lets say you do a search for "toyota prius" in the Cars & Trucks category, then use the sidebar options to narrow it down to just 2005-2009 and Condition=Used. That works fine.

But what happens when you remove "prius" from the keyword field and leave "toyota" there? Or if you replace the whole keywords field with "saturn aura". Should it keep the year and condition values I have set, or should it assume I'm doing a new search and drop the year and condition?

Well, now they've added the search box at the top of the page back (which makes me very happy!). But since it was in the wacky confusing state for so long, I assume the "Current results" label is to make it clear that if you change the keywords in the main search field they're going to keep all your search options intact. But it still gives you the option of changing it to "All eBay Motors" to drop the search options and start from scratch (for those who don't notice the "Start new search" box at the top of the page).

That being said, "Current results" is a confusing label to choose, since the new search will only be applied "within the current results" if new keywords are being added to further constrain the search (ie, "ford" to "ford taurus"). Any time existing keywords are removed or changed, it's no longer searching "within the current results." It's just keeping the same sidebar filters and applying the new search to all of Motors (or, more likely, all of the same category you're currently in).

So the good news is that it actually is giving you the results you're looking for. It' just confusing you unnecessarily with the "current results" label.

Checkers/testdrive - The simplest way to solve this would be either:

a) Switch the category drop-down behavior back to showing the currently selected category, continue to retain all of the applied search options, and assume people are smart enough to look to the top of the page for starting a new search (like they have for the past 12 years).

or

b) If you really think it's necessary to inform them that search options are being retained, add a checkbox beside the title/description box labeled "Use current search options" (or something similarly accurate to the decision you want them to make) that is checked by default when search options are already applied.

I'd strongly recommend a). Twelve years of previous training is something that should be taken advantage of.

Hey taran88,

Excellent point. I can't get into details, but this is something that we are definitely looking into.

As always, thanks for hopping on to offer your thoughts!

Never a truer statement made, Ray! :)

That could apply in so many ways, if they would just listen!

This problem showed up as soon as ebay started rolling out the new searches, at the time I sent an email from the "Send us your comments" tab on one of the new search pages. I did receive a reply that ebay was aware of the problem and was working on it, but that was months ago. Someone at ebay is aware of this problem. I have 3 computers, 1 desktop running xp pro, 1 laptop running xp home and a new Toshiba laptop bought in April running Vista, all three have the same problem.

Hi novabb,

We got the snowmobiles parts refinement options fixed. Thanks for reporting it. Sorry it was gone for so long!

"We got the snowmobile parts refinement options fixed":^O

Well I just must say.....hey thats just dandy.
Perfect time of the year to get that one fixed.

Boats and Watercraft items will be fixed in lets say October, November of this year:^O

That would also be a good time of year to fix motorcycle stuff too:^O

Sorry Roblins as that is somewhat of a negative type of statement or comment:|

But hey what with motorcycle and boating season coming up real soon in October, November.

And snowmobile season is upon us now;)
Lord help us.
