Registering vehicle out of state
Feb 24, 2011 02:51 PM
Was wondering if someone could help. Purchased a vehicle in Mass and I live in Fla. I am flying up to pick the truck up next week but I am not sure if I can put my plate that I am transfering to this truck on this truck? I know I am covered under the insurance for 30 days and I heard 3 days for registration.

Thanks

This deal does sound a little shakey to say the least but as to your questions you have a couple of options on driving it back. request a temp tag from a florida tax collector office and that you need a temp tag for transport back, you will need the vin #. The other (maybe better) option is to have a fl. lic. dealer complete the paperwork for you and do a tag transfer or temp tag transfer of your metal tag you will be transferring. Your insurance can add it now to your policy. Good luck and hope it works out for you.

ALWAYS investigate any purchase and especially the salvage branded titled vehicles. They can be a nightmare and unsafe, just because a bodyshop inspects it means NOTHING, Remember it was a total loss for the insurance company and they would not write it off 100% for a small hit.

I am a lic dealer, mechanic, bodyman and electrical engineer.

Thats what I did, put the tag from my present truck which has a blown engine and I plan to salvage.  Flew in and picked up the truck I bought on ebay.  On the way home, was involved in a 4 vehicle pile up on interstate near large city.  all traffic stopped suddently for another accident up ahead.  I was the last of the 4.  When I saw I could not avoid hitting the car in front of me, I swerved to the right to avoid a direct hit, when I did,  I hit the car in front of my with driver side fender and then hit the concrete divider separating the interstate from new construction for additional lanes to the right. I hit the concrete wall head on. Minimized the damage to the car in front of me but totaled my newly purchased truck plowing into the concrete wall! Thought the tag may be another problem but it was not.  I had insurance on the new truck and had insurance company email me the new ID card before I left so had that with me.  Also had the bill of sale so the tag issue did not even come up with the state troopers investigating the accident.  I got a great deal on the truck but only had liability insurance.  I opted not to take out collision as the truck was 8 years old!!  So good deal or not--I lost out as the truck was totaled!!  Sold it to the tow truck owner for $200 salvage!!  So this turned out to  be expensive trip when I add up flight up, taxi to dealer, traffic violation for accident, rental car home, etc.  So now  I am still bidding on other trucks on ebay with less money to spend now-- Next time I'm getting full insurance no matter how old the truck is!! PS--I did rescue the tag off the totaled truck to use again next time!!
