who to sell the car to

Nov 5, 2009 4:41 PM
I recently sold a 67 Mustang to a gentleman in Norway. Payment was to be received within 7 days or I could sell to another buyer. A deposit had to be made fro $150 within two days which was made, though I did not receive payment for 12 days. I did deposit the check yet it will take about a week and a half to clear. In the mean time I was offered $4,500 more for the car from a gentleman in California. My car was built on the same day, month and year as this guys' birthday which is why he wants it so bad. Legally I could pull out of the sale to the gentleman in Norway since payment was not received in time but does it seem wrong to sell it to the guy in California for more? I even offered to refund the Norwegians money plus $1500 for the trouble which he said no thanks and that he wanted the car. So what would you do? Thanks!

I read some really good advice a long time age. It went something like this..........

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Made pretty good sense to me........ how bout you?

Sounds like you already sold the car. Honor the agreement with the orignal buyer.

I'll bet it takes longer than that for that check to clear.

That is a bad deal! Always say with the terms of your auction.

Yeah, treat others as you want to be treated.

You cant accept the Norwegian's money and then complain that you didnt have a deal because payment was late. Once you accepted the money the deal was on.

But aint no check, not even the one from the guy next door gonna clear in a week and a half. Much less one from another continent. A USA check can bounce on day 22, so ya might want to wait alot longer on one from overseas.

If the CA guy wanted it so bad he should've bid more. He was under the same rules as the Norwegian.

I almost bet you if you reneg on the deal it will come back to bite ya.

its one of the golden rules about treating others as you would want to be treated.....to a point...:^O

besides....I'd almost bet that the transaction with the guy from Norway in the long run will go a lot smoother than with the guy here in the States that wants to suddenly pay you more for the car..

have not heard to many bad things about deals going sour with anyone from the part of the world where Norway/Denmark/Holland etc are located, they love our American muscle cars, but next time instead of accepting a check, do a bank to bank wire transfer, its safer, faster, and almost painless and no fears about someones check bouncing......

Yea the gentleman found it on craigslist after the auction had aleady ended. I posted it on both. I thought the guy from Norway was going to do a wire transfer as I gave him my info to do that. He then said he sent a check instead. The check came through citi bank of deleware netherlands. All of the money will be relesed to me on Monday. Should I wait longer than that. I talked my dad (I am in college and the car is at home) and he said he talked to the us branch of citi and they said the check was good. But should I still wait longer? Thanks!

should you wait longer after the money is released?

might not hurt, just to be on the really safe side of things, on the other hand, if this deal is going as normal, your buyer is going to arrange all the transport and shipping, correct?

If that's the case there will be a delay of time anyway's, it will take time for a transport company to be hired or sent out by the shipping company, the last time that I sold a car overseas (it went to Denmark) (third one!) after the money had been all cleared through wire transfer it still took another month before a transport company called to make arrangements for pick up.

just make sure that your buyer is doing all the leg work about arranging all the transport and shipping etc, and make sure that he keeps you up to date with what is going on and with whom, then you can verify everything on your end as far as if the transport company is for real etc.....

believe me I know what you are feeling, the first car I sold to an overseas buyer I was wetting my pants all the way through the deal, after all was said and done, I became good friends with the buyer, sends me xmas cards, calls, writes, etc., they are in general really good people!!

another thing you might get yourself prepared for is the length of time everything does take, in my cases it took at least a month each time for a transport company to show up and then the car would be transported to a port where it would sit for up to another 3 months, then another couple of weeks sitting on a ship crossing the pond, another couple of weeks to clear their customs and then to finally be in their hands, altogether from the time the sale happened to the time the buyer received it, about 4.5 months.

:O

Buyer in Norway was going to do wire transfer but then sent a check instead? WHOA, that is a big red flag to me. Did the bank garauntee in writing, to your father that the check was good? Because words dont mean nothing. And the word of a banker is less than nothing. Wait for more advice before releasing the car, some of the experts here can help better than I.

I'm not saying it's a scam, but once the car leaves your hands there's not much you can do to get paid. I would want to return him his check (don not write him a new one) then let him do a wire transfer. I would also move that money from one bank to another. Be very careful here.

Yea the problem is that my dad put the money in my account back home, and a portion of the funds have been deposited while the rest clears. So I can't do a stop on the check and send it back. He has already arranged shipping through Oceania, LLC. I have talked to him on skype and he seems genuine but I just don't want to get hosed. He said this is his 5th US car but he bought it with a brand new ebay account with 0 feedback.

have you checked with Oceania to make sure everything is legit?

Thats what I did, I called the shipper to confirm that they indeed have an order for transport and shipping, and do not call some number that he gives you, look it up yourself.

Just curious, what was his reasons for not following through with the wire transfer?

The first overseas buyer I had from Denmark, hedged on the transfer because of the fees he was going to get charged, in the long run he went ahead and followed through with it.

Now, some banks here in the States only charge the receiver of the transfer meaning you or I, and I was going to pass those charges on to him which I did, just curious?

in other words he got charged twice, once on both ends, but it was certainly safer for all involved.

"have not heard to many bad things about deals going sour with anyone from the part of the world where Norway/Denmark/Holland et"

Yes, I sold a Merc edes to a dude from Holland. It was an off-Ebay deal, and he did wire transfer, and everything went very smoothly. I was just shocked that he'd send money to a total stranger with no recourse. If I were a crook, it would have been an EASY scam. It's nice to see someone so trusting....but it makes ya wonder, how long before their luck runs out and they get scammed.

OP, if you accepted the guys check, go through with the deal. If you had rejected the check, because it did not conform to your payment method, it would have been different- but I'd say if you accepted the check, you have a deal. Wait for it to fully clear and send the car off to Sven, by-yimminy.
