eBay will be releasing an update to the eBay Enhanced Picture Services ActiveX control software during the week of 6/19/06. Installation of the update will be mandatory for users of Enhanced Picture Services. Users of the current version will be prompted when they upload pictures to eBay to install the new version (version 48).

The new version of the Enhanced Picture Services ActiveX control software includes internal changes to fix issues reported by members and to enhance security. There are no visible changes in the features of the software for adjusting and uploading pictures to eBay.

On Windows XP and Windows 2000, your Windows user account must have Administrator privileges to install any ActiveX control. Further troubleshooting help for eBay Enhanced Picture Services is available at Link.

This thread will be updated this week with further information when the ActiveX software is actually updated on the site.

Is this the change that is causing me to get billed for PICTURE PACKS that I never selected, never wanted and never got..but that I am now getting charge for anyway? I've been writing to "the help people" at eBay--but they have been no help. And, more of these charges keep appearing.

Hi integratedconcerns,

I apologize for any billing issues you've been experiencing. However, the ActiveX software update is unrelated to other picture options and picture-related fees.

Customer Support handles billing issues and I suggest you contact them again if you are not satisfied that your billing issue has been addressed.

UPDATE: Version 48 of the Enhanced Picture Services ActiveX control is now active on the US eBay site. We expect to enable it on other eBay sites this afternoon.

NO MATTER WHAT I DO I CANNOT DOWNLOAD THE UPDATE FOR PICTURES. EVERYTHING WAS WORKING FINE THIS MORNING WHEN I LISTED 6 TO 7 NEW ITEMS FOR SALE THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT WONT DO THE SOFTWARE UPDATE. I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL TIMES AND DONE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE SUGGETED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. NOW IT WONT EVEN LET ME DOWNLOAD WITH THE BASIC PICTURE SERVICES. WHATS GOING ON. CAN YOU HELP PLEASE

Hi funinazcrafting,

I'm sorry to hear you're having a problem with the software update. Your computer most likely has a software setting that is blocking the update from working. Without more details about your computer setup and what symptoms you're seeing, it's not really possible for me or anyone else to suggest specific actions to fix the issue.

As a next step, I suggest you contact Live Chat for assistance and be ready with information about the versions of Windows and Internet Explorer and about any additional security software products you've got installed on your system.

Jeez,this sucks.Everything going smoothly for months,now I cant use my enhanced photo service and I cant download the new.I have xp and active x.Why would ebay change a good thing?I don't understand this.Sincerely,Iris

We've had reports through various channels that a few members are having problems updating the ActiveX software. To emphasize a point made in the troubleshooting Help page:

To install the eBay Enhanced Picture Services ActiveX control software when using Windows XP or Windows 2000, you must be signed on to your computer with a user account configured with local Administrator permissions. You can refer to the Microsoft support article How To Create and Configure User Accounts in Windows XP for instructions about how to determine and change the permissions for a user account.

Administrator permissions are essential and without them, none of the other troubleshooting hints are effective.

What about those of us that use Windows ME ? As I was told by a photo tech at live chat he was unable to get it to download to one person using ME who had contacted him. And no there is no local administrative permission accounts In ME.

When will we be able to download this. And no don't tell me to switch to XP. I like ME and it still works with every program that I run .

Evidently this Active X update was not tested with ME . Still are many of us using Me and Windows 98.

I ALSO HAVE WINDOWS ME. I SPENT 6 HOURS WITH LIVE HELP AND STILL CANNOT DOWNLOAD THE ENHANCED PICTURE SERVICE UPDATE. MY OTHER COMPUTER IS AN XP AND IT UPDATED WITH NO PROBLEM. THEY ARE ON THE SAME NETWORK WITH THE SAME FIREWALL AND ARE SET UP EXACTLY THE SAME. THIS STINKS!

I have read all the information you have linked to and no place does it say that you have to FIRST un-install the Active X that is currently on your system BEFORE you download the new version.

Does the new version override the old one or do I need to uninstall before I attempt to download the new version?

Good question. There is no requirement to un-install the current version. The upgrade to the new version is mandatory, is prompted, and will replace the current version.

We've completed additional tests with Windows ME and 98SE. We've determined that the ActiveX update does success if using Internet Explorer 6 SP1. If you are having problems with the update, and are using Windows ME or 98 with an earlier version of Internet Explorer, we suggest that you use Windows Update on the Microsoft site to upgrade Internet Explorer and install other Microsoft critical patches.

Users of Windows ME and 98 should note that Microsoft has announced that as of July 11th they will no longer offer support (including updates and patches) for those versions of Windows, which means they may not work with new and upgraded features of services offered over the Web.

I have all of the patches and downloads available through microsoft for ME and still am unable to download your picture service. Us ME users need a acivex download that will work on our systems. Not everyone is running XP!

Hi gamblerscorp,

Do you have Internet Explorer updated to version 6.0 SP1? Other members have reported that version (the latest for Windows ME) works with the Picture Services ActiveX control. Earlier versions do not.

Following is part of a response our customer service team has created for users on ME who are having issues with the ActiveX control installation. It's improtant to note that if you haven't updated via Windows Update for a long time, it is sometimes necessary to repeat it several times--until it shows no more updates are available--to get all the updates and patches. That's necessary to insure that some updates are applied in a particular order:

"... in regard to the problems that you've had using our Picture Service with your Windows ME.

Please be aware that soon, Microsoft is retiring support for these products because they are outdated and can expose customers to security risks. We recommend that customers who are still running Windows 98 or Windows Me upgrade to a newer, more secure Microsoft operating system, such as Windows XP, as soon as possible. In the meantime, in order to continue to use the Enhanced version of Picture Service with your Windows ME, you will have to make sure that you have all available Microsoft updates. To get those please follow the steps below:

With your web browser open select 'Tools' - 'Windows Update'. Your computer will then automatically be scanned to determine if there are any updates available. Just follow the on screen instructions to download and install the "Critical Updates and Service Packs".. Once the installation completes, repeat the process, and continue to do so until there are no more available updates for you. If you don’t update regularly, this may require several repetitions. For the best results please make sure you download and install the latest version of Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 at:
