Hi...recieved a bracelet today and it LOOKS like it says Alpaca Mexico 925...The mexico and 925 are pretty clear but the other word just bearly readable and looks to say Alpaca...now I know Alpaca is not sterling..so could I be reading it wrong, could it be another town? I don't believe there is a town Alpaca Mexico, or is there? Thanks

From what I can find, Alpaca silver is not sterling silver.

Post a clear picture of the hallmark, and maybe we can decipher it.

When you read on an Item ALPACA MEXICO it means that this item was made in Mexico using ALPACA, (Nickel) Alpaca is not a City from Mexico as someone has thought, however, when you read TAXCO MEXICO, it means that this piece of art was made in TAXCO. Taxco is a small city/town located on the Southside of Mexico City and belongs to the state of Guerrero, in Taxco Guerrero you'll find almost anything made of GOLD or SILVER, and of course you will find lots of ALPACA too, all of these to a wholesale price.

From the article, this is an answer to the last part of your question.

There is no town in Mexico called Alpaca although in the earlier days of Ebay before people got educated,, items marked Alpaca were listed as sterling made in Alpaca Mexico. It is not unusual for  mexican jewelry to be falsely stamped 925 by vendors . Usually if the item is already stamped Alpaca, they do not bother preferring to wait for pieces that do not carry that mark and only say "Mexico" or Hecho in Mexico"

Is the bracelet one of those stone inlayed cuff ones? If so they are not 925 and do not always carry the Alpaca mark.

Hi...sorry the second pic is so dark...it is an inlay bracelet, you can see the 925 in upper right of pic. along with other marking in center. Ive never come across this before, so I'm guessing its fake!

The 925 was added after the bracelet was made when it was stamped Alpaca. This type are common and were factory made in Mexico by the thousands and can be picked up in S. Ca at swap meets. for a dollar or two. 925 stamps are easily purchased and someone somewhere was trying to make a dishonest buck. Could have been done by a supplier to a street vender in Mexico or could have been done in the US.

Mexico is very strict about their sterling silver and how it is marked. If hand fabricated it will have th first letter of the town were it is made i.e T for Taxco followed by the first letter of the smith's surname. Then there is a dash followed by the number assigned to that smith based on the number of smiths who have that letter.

Going along with what Lenorep posted, the above link explains about Mexican silver.

And yes the hallmark to me does appear to say Alpaca.

Thank you for all your help and links. I've been given the links before and they are very helpful and I knew what to look for, I just wasn't sure what I was seeing!

I'll speak in general and not about this particular bracelet. Alpacca (I think with double c) also known as Nickel silver or new silver or German silver is a copper alloy with nickel and zinc. An alpacca jewel looks like silver but it contains no silver at all. I have some forks marked with the stamp :nickel silver , but as I've said above they are not real silver, they are alpacca.

Alpacca is German Silver of Mexican Silver but not .925 or

925silver and 75alloy...which is Sterling.

You can look this up on Google and it will tell you all the ratios

Never believe markes..they are too easily fudged.  TEST and there is a site somewhere to tell you how so it doesn't destroy the piece.

Mexican Silver is actual silver from Mexico, not another name for Alpaca.

I see the 2 C's used when it's from Italy, or that area, but Mexico, at least, only uses 1 C.

There are 1000's of falsely marked bracelets from Mexico.  Looks like several the OP bought are of the kind usually faked.  They often have a silver plating so fool simple tests.

Well my seller took her item back graciously. She truely seemed to not know that Alpaca is fake. I did a search for sterling silver Alpaca, and there seems to be other sellers that do not know either!

I do daily searches for goodies and since I only do silver I see it a TON.  I even have a message saved in a document that I send to sellers when I come across one.  Most are extremely thankful I saved them from an issue but every now and then I get one that insists Alpaca is a place or that since a magnet doesn't stick it has to be sterling. lol
