Anyone Know of a Hopi Silvesmith Emerson?

Anyone Know of a Hopi Silvesmith Emerson?
Jun 13, 2012 04:55 AM

I know there is a Navajo silvesmith named Emerson.  I have a bracelet signed Emerson that has what appear to be stylized kachina figures.  It is heavy with the kind of deeply incised engraving that is characteristic of Hopi pieces.

I wonder if this means it is Hopi. Is there a Hopi silversmith nemaed Emerson?   Or could it just be a Navajo silversmith using a Hopi symbol?  Or could it be stylized Yei figures?

I am not going to sell it, I was just wondering.

I looked up a a pretty coprehensive list of Native American silversmiths, and found a Bill Emerson, who is a Navajo smith.

I also read in the above article, which gives some points on how to tell the difference between the 3, that while Navajo silversmiths sign their names or initials to a piece, the Hopi use symbols.

Correct!  Emerson is Navajo and there are several in the family who do silversmithing. Usually the type work I have seen and owned were overlay using very thick gauge silver resulting in very heavy pieces.

Overlay means 2 pieces are sweated (soldered) together and what you perceive as incised is actually a sawed out part of the top layer of silver which creates a design.

Thank you, leno. What a wonderful link. I must finish reading it.

I know what overlay means; I thought it was more characteristic of Hopi work which is why I wondered if my piece was Hopi.

And those pieces are mouth-watering.

If a method of making jewelry is popular, and sells why should a Navajo not use it?  A silversmith is never confined to just using one method to make silver   Besides many Navajo smiths work for others and just make whatever style is ordered. Navajos also do a lot of Zun typei inlay work now as well as Hopi type overlay.

My Emerson bracelet has a glossy finish, though, not a satin finish.

The liink says a gloss finish is characteristic of Hopi work.  Or perhaps this Emerson piece is another example of Navajo adaptability.

It does not matter what your link states. There is nothing that compels any tribal member who is a smith to confine him to making silver jewelry in a certain way.  If one is a journeyman silversmith, one is adapt at using all techniques and since the majority of silversmiths supply shops who sell jewelry, they make what the shop owner thinks will sell at that given time. Much Hopi work was also glossy in the past and if their is a demand for overlay work since there are not that many Hopi silversmiths working ( The Hopi reservation is not that large) the Navajos will pick up the slack. Before the start of the Hopi cooperative using the G.I bill after WW2, Hopi silversmiths made their jewelry identical to what the Navajos made.

Should have said most Navajo work gives a glossy finish - not a brushed finish.

Can you send a photo of the bracelet and mark? Finish on the metal is not a decisive factor to determine affiliation. Hopi work can have a satin, matte finish or be highly polished - not specifically one or the other, just depends on what the artisan prefers. I know of a Hopi silversmith whose name is Emerson. He's not the only Hopi named Emerson, but his mark is very distinctive. I'd have to see the mark on your bracelet to say if it's his. I'll check back tomorrow for a reply. Thanks.

The Emerson whom I was referring to is Navajo and his name is Emerson Bill. His wife or perhaps former wife is Nora and signed just Nora . Emerson Bill stamps his work Emerson. I have owned several pieces by both and Emerson  is noted for using  heavy gauge silver which when sweated together make for a super heavy bracelet.. A friend picked up several braclets by him at a pawn shop in Gallup. It is quite possible that he supplied that pawn shop with his work since they were very new with no scratches or signs of any wear.

By now I guess you know that the first name is Emerson and the last name is Bill - not Bill Emerson. Should be many examples if you check google with all the info you need.

I'd still like to see a photo of the mark to see if it matches the Emerson I referred to who is Hopi, or at least eliminate the possibility, but OP hasn't responded to the request or returned for awhile. I'm not following this thread with email notices, but I have returned to it a few times just in case. Will look again in a couple of days before calling it quits.

According to an article I read, above, Hopi artisans do not sign their name to a piece.  They use symbols.  Is that true in all cases?

If the article you read above was in the link furnished by emerald40, it says "usually" which does not mean "always". The article even shows an example of a Hopi mark which contains both a symbol and the signature of the artist.

You wil find symbols which are sometimes associated with clan affiliations, i.e., the Hopi mark in the article belongs to Joe Josytewa of the snow clan. His symbol kinda resembles a snowflake. Bear clan members may use some type of bear symbol. Water claim members may use clouds or other water symbols. Initials and names written out like the example in the article are also found on Hopi pieces.

I think the link is excellent. Thanks emerald40, for sharing it.

OP seems to have disappeared. Maybe she was satisfied with the info she got here but would think she would come back  and make a statement to that effect.

You are very welcome.  And thank you for your explanation.  I was the one who posted the link and asked the question.

I did not want to give incorrect info thinking that no Hopi artisans signed their names to their jewelry.

LOL. That's too funny! Obviously I didn't notice. I'll be laughing over this all night. Thanks for asking the question 'cause I needed the mirth and guess I can live with the embarrassment. Think I'll go back to lurking only for awhile, LOL. Just glad no one could see my face when I read your last post emerald.

I am OP and first of all, half the time when I open this board there is no Reply option, a glitch.

Second I thought the matter was settled, it is Navajo because it has a signature Emerson, NOT a halmark.

And what's not to like??

Some posters on these boards read all sorts of negative motives and agendas  into other people's posts, for no reason I can fathom.

Some people post a question,  get an answer and do not have time to keep returning to the thread after that.   Thank you for all your info and interest, iot is not unappreciated.
