I buy and sell gold and silver but not on ebay i decide to buy some 925 silver from ebay to make silver 1oz ingots for a customer of mine. And to my suprize the china and hong kong silver is mostly fakes. being silver plate over copper or brass but not 925 silver as they list these items to be.So I just want everyone to know they need to be careful not everything marked 925 on ebay is real.i purchase this 925 from 4 differant sellers and all 4 were fakes. So i am guessing that there are many other out there selling the same junk.
Ebay need to get some done to stop the fake jewery being listed as 925 sterling.

I'm curious...I had an item I bought not show up. Seller put tiny scrap CPU pins-a thimble's worth-in an oversized box, so mailman couldn't fit it in mailbox, and it was stolen. The eBay "Guaranteed Buyer's Protection" is supposed to cover this type of problem-they didn't with me-even denied me my right to reasonable accomodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act-were they of ANY help to you? You should not have to pay for them providing a venue to sell for unscrupulous Company's/Individual sellers. How do these thieves get high ratings? I hope you got covered-so many people didn't-mt purchase was too small for them to care-eBay IS Parasitical Corporate America! Good luck!

omg! I just found out yesterday that a sterling silver charm bracelet that I purchased a couple of months back was fake!

It was marked 925. When I asked the seller about it, she said she thought it was real! not only that, shes been selling these bracelets like hot cakes and I bet you the people that are paying for them, think that their real just like I did. Is it against the law to post sterling silver if it is a fake ? waiting for your reply..

It's definitely illegal to do it knowingly.  On the other hand, anyone with any sense knows that if something seems to good to be true it generally is a fake.

What really has me wondering is why this antique thread was resurrected.

Um, ...my goodness, telling a seller to "go kill yourself!!" in feedback comments sounds like a very good way to have all your comments pertaining to this particular transaction removed entirely by eBay. (perceived as a threat of violence, or something else equally bad)

One really should first calm down and just try to stick to the facts when posting feedback/comments.

Your reply just makes you appear histrionic and a hothead, (to say the least) and I'm sure it has had the consequence of landing you on the BBL's of everyone who reads that.

Double ugh.Ebay should sanction a buyer who would say such a thing in feedback, then pull that comment, its very offensive.

Offensive is an understatement.  Death threats in public can earn you a visit from the local cops.

I just started looking at sterling chains and all of the prices are so cheap, not just china but us sellers as well.. what should someone expect to pay for a 18" sterling chain? I never wear silver but do need a chain for a few pieces I have.

Its a shame  you never know what you are getting, even the more expensive makes me gun shy

.925 from what I read is not solid sterling so what is?

thanks so much for your time

Check the sellers feedback, if there are complaints of selling fake silver, hit the back button.

I bought a store brand ( Albertsons) can of pumpkin last week. Did not check until today. It says" product made in China" in small letters on the label. I wonder what the can is made from..

If the price seems to cheap for what you are looking at, then chances are it is a cheap necklace. You get what you pay for. If you buy cheap, you get cheap. Gold and silver prices are the same all over the world, so why would someone sell it below the spot price, unless it is FAKE.

Ebay is 99% fake sterling, even if the item is stamped .925.

Over I year I have purchased a total of 22 "sterling, .925" pendants on Ebay. From China, the UK, Canada, and one pendant from the USA.

6 people got together and and watched me acid test the pieces.

21 are junk metal and the one from US is the only sterling piece.

I just emailed a USA Ebay seller about his 925 sterling.  He said if I "expect it to be sterling, don't buy it."

I thought it was against the law to sell fake, stamped silver in the USA.

Dear shoppethebest,

Please email me to confirm that your “925 chains” are actually sterling.
The 925 stamp means nothing on Ebay.

Sellers Response:

Hello
I do not make any assumptions regarding this jewelry. This might be plated with sterling, not solid sterling.  If you are looking for guaranteed sterling, this jewelry is not for you.

I can only see one of the items that you have left a negative feedback for, most of them are private auctions..and thats the $2.53 pendant from China..I have to ask, did you not see this sellers fifty eight negative feedbacks, most of which are for selling fake sterling silver, before you decided to buy from him?

I only recently purchased two acid kits and "no" I was not knowledgable of how to view a seller's complete feedback. I only viewed the seller's current feedback.

Dee, Thank you for properly chastising me. I deserved it for my ignorance & will NEVER make these same errors as I continue to learn to use Ebay.

I clearly was naive about trusting people.

My question is: Is there a way we can respectfully instuct a new user how to review a seller's complete feedback and to encourage them to purchase an acid kit ASAP, if they plan to buy silver?

Thank you

To check a sellers feedback for selling fake silver go to toolhaus.org see if someone else has left negative feedback for fake. If there is even one report of fake silver hit the back buttom and don't buy from them. 99% of what is coming from overseas is fake. There are US sellers that sell it too. The problem with most US sellers, but not all, is that they think they can buy from overseas cheap and then resell it for a profit but never check to see if it is real or fake. Sadly, the newbies think they are going to get rich quick by buying cheap and selling high and have no idea that it is fake until they get negatve feedback saying it is fake. Most people think that because it is stamped .925 that it has to be real.

He!! I have some stuff marked 14k right now I got from a seller from the US that is fake big time and he knew it was when he sold it. He was just counting on me not knowing. I did pay full spot price for the things I got that was fake. He did give me a full refund and tell me to throw it in the trash, that tells me he knew what he was doing.

Just remember that gold and silver are the same spot price all over the world and ask yourself this "why is it so cheap" and you will know that it is fake. I don't buy precious metals from overseas, only the US and even then I have to be careful and check what I buy. I stand behind everything that I sell and only offer it for sale after it has been tested.

All you really have to do is right click on the sellers negative or neutral feedbacks in their fb ratings box, then click Open, and all their negs and neuts will come up.

Thank you for your assistance. This has worked well to see a seller's feedback and to determine who I want to buy from.

If they are buying it to resale, they better be testing it. How do they know that it is what they say it is? Did you ask them how they knew it was .925 sterling then?

The buyer that was reselling only cared that the item had the 925 stamp, thus bringing in more money.

He did not seem to mind reselling fake silver or cheating a person.

When I asked the seller that was reselling jewelry, he asked me not to buy his silver jewelry.
