Jewelry not as described? a common occurrence?

How often do you buy jewelry on eBay that is not as described?

For me, 5 times so far. I have gotten 3 fake Tiffany items, then a Tiffany bracelet missing 3 links [that were shown clearly in the photo] and just now a Tiffany silver bracelet that is 2 sizes larger than described and does not fit.

The 3 fakes I paid to mail back - I was a newbie and just wanted the darn things out of my posession.

The bracelet with missing links I've asked for a partial refund after getting repair prices from Tiffany.

Does this happen often?

And does the buyer really have to pay shipping when it is seller error ["or something"]?

Of all the pieces, how many were Tiffany & Co?  All of them?  Not a surprise since 98% of the Tiffany & Co sterling jewelry sold on ebay is FAKE.

Op, you like Tiffany! I do too..I dont see any negative feedbacks left for fake Tiffany pieces? Ive sold estate Tiffany here a few years ago..I would be afraid to do it now..too many fakes..and even though Tiff sued Ebay for allowing fakes on here..it continues.

Dee, did you see the stamp on the Tiffany Bracelet?  Made in Mexico 925?  I see that some T&Co pieces were made there, but does the stamp look right to you?

Yikes..I agree that Tiff stamp is wonky. Not saying its fake..just not the stamp you normally see on high quality Tiff pieces.

Four out of eight Tiffany pieces were fake - that's part of how I learned what to look for. All the sellers were very happy to take back the jewelry and said they had no idea the jewelry was not real. I see the most horrible fakes on eBay that people are having bidding wars over. sigh.

I bought two kind of expensive items and both were genuine, so that's a plus - & both came with certified gemologists' reports with appraisals. I think it's mostly in the lower end silver where all the deception is -  one seller has 1400 "authentic Tiffany" items for sale!

One thing is - with the older jewelry the stamps can be strange. I know for a fact that my Mother's engagement ring [from the 70's] is Tiffany and the stamp is messy looking.

Yes I believe that..we had an old bracelet on here not to long ago with a really bad stamp..I thought for sure it was fake..I was wrong.

One more thing...as far as not seeing negative feedback on Tiffany fakes. I am assuming either the buyer thinks the fake is real...or the issue is settled between the parties and as a result the buyer does not leave a negative comment.

If it was an honest mistake on the sellers part..I agree with that too.

One tip about Tiffany - stay away from the new stuff.  Don't buy anything with the rhodium plating and you'll eliminate 90% or better of the fakes.  If it's bare sterling that can tarnish, chances are it's real.  The Chinese fake factories won't spend the money to make a copy out of real sterling, and  I've never seen a copy made from silverplate. That doesn't mean they aren't out there, but at least you've made your odds better.

I've had several things that were slightly magnetic [sterling isn't] and one, that when I polished it, the silver came off and there was copper colored metal right under the surface. That piece looked totally authentic; signature & weight.

Some of the fakes I got were vintage [retired]. But I agree -never buy new! I also feel more comfotable if it's got a date or initials engraved on it with the Tiffany font and looks a little beat up. Of course not everyone wants the "used look", but I love it.

Wow you must be a really nice person buying tiffanys for $1,200 and still leaving people positive feedback for fast shipping even though what they sold you was fake.  If you are going to pay $1,200 for I would just buy it from Tiffany and Company stores.

I buy and sell here on ebay I have a perfect track record so far and like to make my customers happy.

The two more expensive Tiffany's I bought came with an independent gemologists appraisal. They were then authenticated here locally and given a GIA appraisal once I recieved them. Both pieces appraised much higher than the sales price.

do you realize that your post is actually slander against two very fine eBay sellers?

I've asked that your comment be removed.

I've received things that were SNAD, but only because they were misdescribed (dunno if it was ignorance or deliberate).  I've been fortunate to not get any fakes.

I myself have recieve a LOT of fake sterling silver items from ebay. I relisted and sold two bangles that were clearly marked alpaca and I made a point of saying "I purchased these on ebay as sterling silver. I am selling them for what they really are, Alpaca". Sold the two of them for $3.75 and the buyer had the nerve to complain about the size of one of them and gave me my one and only neutral feedback. I responded with "I accurately measure and weigh all my items". Which I do. So much for me being honest huh?

On your 67.78 purchase. I thought all tiffany links were soldered and you can never tell where the soldered part is. I see unsoldered links in this bracelet. Can anyone clarify this for me.

funky link?
Aug 15, 2012 04:40 AM

I think I see what you mean - a link that has a line on it?

I have the bracelet in front of me right now and I can't see the line. It may have been a reflection.

I also looked at the shape of the clasp and where the "925" is stamped on it. I liked the patina of long use and the engraving that is consistant with Tiffany style.

When I get a piece I weigh it and research the weight online. In this case I compared it to another identical bracelet I have. When I received the breacelet it looked and felt genuine, but it's fun to really check out things out close up.

I use a gram scale [about $12] and a jewelers loupe [about $3].
