S80 Silver?
Feb 19, 2012 10:55 AM
|
Some (most) of sellers from (or buying from) China are selling S80 jewelry items as .925 Sterling Silver and it's not at all. They might not even show S80 anywhere in the description. S80 (like heavy plated or layered) might even acid test as silver, but the most accurate way of testing is to melt it down and test the specific gravity of the bead that remains (what doesn't burn up). What's worse is, unwarry buyers who purchase these might resell them as .925 Sterling and never know the differance, so the S80 spreads through the nation and lowers the value of .925/Sterling Silver. Take the poll and maybe eBay will do something about this problem.

People on ebay resell, so imo it is important to also ask all sellers where their silver came from. Some may unknowlingly be passing this fake stuff off to a 3rd party.

Although you said it using differant words from my origional post ("unwarry buyers who purchase these might resell them as .925 Sterling and never know the differance"), it's good to spread the word. It must be working though, about 2/3 people didn't even know there was a problem.

LOL...'if its to good to be true, then it's probably not true.' I e-mailed a couple of these sellers advertising S80 silver and point blank asked the question - "Is this solid sterling or .925, or is it plated?" Both responses were 'Of course'... E-bay needs to ban these kind of sellers who falsely advertise. I also agree with another poster in which we need to stop doing business with them. I am a reseller, and only offer quality items at reasonable prices. I'm not in it to make a killing. But, I also am not going to sell something that I am not sure about. Just remember, your not gonna get real silver or gold for some of the prices your seeing out there.

Yes, there are many buyers who don't know the difference. Anyone dealing in precious metals owes it to themselves to educate themselves. I would start with a rare-earth magnet, and acid testing equip and a good set of files. Careful though...many base metals being used are non-magnetic. If you are not sure...perhaps you can take your items to a numismatic dealer. They will without a doubt be able to tell you. They have x-ray equipment and other means to determine authenticity. My numismatic dealer also carries all the acid testing equipment that I need.
Education is the key to power.

Oh, another couple things... learn about silver. There are two key things I look for. One is smell. Silver has a specific smell, and two, real silver has a different luster about it. Good luck.

In truth any American selling S80 as .925 is open to Federal charges...they are dealing with International Precious Metals and they are strictly regulated ~ especially at these prices..I
bought a batch 10 necklaces marked .925 on link tab which connects to the lobster catch....this was always a sign of fake as it's not part of the actual item it's an add on.Owned jewelry store and can tell by just looking it's not Sterling.925 it doesn't feel it -have a second sense with this
Anyway~ if Americans want to keep the quality of LIFE we have worked to establish we need to do something to expose this fraud or we will degrade ourselves to the standards of China. Not just in jewelry but all things - they cared nothing about our baby's choking on poor constructed toys or making them sick with toxic toy stuffing. Burning us with flaimable clothes, lacing our food with chemical or kill our pets with poisons...and the gov lets them WE must speak up to protect ourselves say nothing of our income...they should be ban from selling this on ebay in the US ...but sellers are the ones who must take action cause you know the one profiting from these sellers won't unless forced to do it............someone needs to get the Feds in on this cause it is breaking International Presious Metals Regulations.

Our country has very stringet laws regarding the sale of fake sterling silver, unfortunately, China, the worst culprit, does not. Sadly our laws have no jurisdiction in China. DEE

This is all still a waste of our time.......time Americans need to spend in productive ventures cause eBay forces us to compete with Chinese sellers who not only sell fake they sell way below our standard of living............why cause their life standard is lower and from what I've been told (may be wrong) they are gov subdized to get control of our economic market.
As much as I'd like to start a anti Chinese sellers on USeBay I will not go that negative route.
It's easier to just avoid them at 70 my age..
For you younger folk who will be around longer to support yourself in a world owned by them Try by cluing the Feds in ~ there are International Precious Metals Laws being broken here.!!!!! They will solve the problem directely with eBay's abating the issue.

I did find this..but it states that laws to regulate the trading of international precious metals are very very weak.
"International efforts to disrupt terrorist and organized crime networks must pay special attention to how these networks are financed. Global trade in precious metals and gemstones has become a significant source of financing for both organized crime and terrorist groups. As the demand for materials bearing precious metals and stones continues to grow, criminal and terrorist networks will exploit weak national and international monitoring of the trade to finance activities that threaten us all. Public-private partnerships offer a real chance of increasing transparency and monitoring in the trade of precious metals and gemstones, thus undermining the financial foundation of global terrorist networks.
Serious efforts have been undertaken by governments, international organizations, and the global business community to stem illegal trade in many commodities used in money laundering and terrorist financing—especially since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in the United States. Significant success has been seen in disrupting the trade of illegal rough diamonds through the Kimberly Process. But success has been elusive in the illegal trafficking of precious metals and gemstones. Efficient law enforcement in this area is hampered by the lack of internationally recognized procedures for certifying batches of primary precious metals-bearing raw materials and a lack of well-established methods of identifying the origin of both precious metals and gemstones. These shortcomings complicate the process of distinguishing between legal and criminal supplies and place a substantially greater burden on the due diligence efforts of precious metals refiners and stonecutters to ascertain the veracity of their customers.
Russian research institutes and forensic laboratories, led by the mining and metallurgical company Norilsk Nickel, have devised advanced methods to identify the origin of semi-products bearing platinum-group metals (PGM). This methodology can be expanded to other metal groups and gemstones, taking the form of a Platinum Initiative to ensure efficient certification procedures in the international metal trade and strengthen existing certification schemes in the diamond and gemstones industries."

been out of bus for yrs ...when I bought and sold PM's was liscensed and regulated by Attorney Generals office in the state..I'd assume AG Office in Washington would be interested since it is not legal to falsify metals quality in this country they are selling it in this country if they are selling on eBayUS and taking our dollars in payment for it...

I do notice that a lot of Chinese sellers in China who used to list as 925 silver have changed their listings to silver plate or just silver and some put plated in the descriptions. They still show photos with the 925 mark which must be stamped at the factory or by their suppliers. The stones however are described as topaz, zircons, CZ's amethyst, garnet etc. and are really just glass.

Yes, if you remember, about six months ago, Ebay started cracking down on some of these huge volume China sellers for calling their stuff .925, when it was plated..many of the descriptions were changed on the threat of being naru'd. DEE

Including a hi-volume seller in N.Y.with 2 selling IDs who listed his as designed by someone whose name I forgot. The big trouble is that the lower volume US sellers who are selling the same stuff originating in China are still listing as 925 or sterling.

I was looking a sellers page and saw the S80... I had no idea about it... so I decided to look online for teh difference between S80 and 925... Im glad I did, cause in the future I would maybe buy a S80 item and regret it!!! And now I know that no matter what they say, S80 quality will let me down!

I really think e-bay should seperate China from US and let them have their own e-bay, because they have gotten wise to the new items not being bought and now list in vintage!!! It is not vintage stuff they are selling..We should have our own US vintage and US estate items where no other country can list.
However that is not to say some US buyers would not buy from China and sell on US.. I really do not see how to avoid this situation, and it is a bad one for all honest sellers.

There are quite a number of US sellers who import from China and sell in the US on Ebay and elsewhere. It would be useless to separate US and Chinese sellers. Also many Chinese have emigrated to the US but still maintain their Chinese supplier contacts.

That depends on how much you paid. If you paid anywhere near what 925 from Bali or Mexico sells for you got ripped off. If you paid very little, you got what you paid for or what you would expect to pay for silver plated copper.

As a seller of some silver items, I always state that the item is stamped .925 or 0.999 for fine sterling silver. If the seller doesn't specify what is stamped on the piece, ask before bidding if you want silver and not some plated metal.

The China sellers use fake .925 stamps on all their jewelry..and many 'gold' chains from Italy have fake stamps too..a stamp means nothing..you have to test. DEE

2nd that. I purchased some cheap S80 chains and they arrived with 925 marked connecting tags. I got some faux opal rings only advertised as silver so I figured silver plated and most came stamped 925. I think Chinese factories put the mark on when they make their jewelry. I see gobs of Italian chains marked 18k at flea markets and the chains themselves can be lifted by my magnet. Much Mexican jewelry is also marked 925 Taxco and is really Alpaca.

Hello everybody, My opinion on S80 silver is this, it shouldn't be banned from ebay as long as it is described correctly letting people know that its plated. Some people don't care about the purity thay just go for the style of it, so if I can buy it for cheap and list it correctly so people know what there really buying then what is the problem with it. The real problem is not s80 silver, its people, untruthful people. Even jewelry made of s80 is still worth something to someone, if you can buy and make a small profit than go for it, just be honest.
