I've lost $60 on a textbook scam from a Half.com seller. I've used Ebay sparingly and Amazon mainly in previous years, and will NEVER use Half again. I don't care if they have part-time management. I want resolution. Their lack of customer service is driving more customers away (with their money) than the cost of full time management would bring. I should have to wait months to get my money back after Half takes it in seconds? I don't think so. Half might have my money now, but they'll NEVER get it again. Their lack of customer service is the best ad money AMAZON could buy...

I'm curious...is this post meant to educate buyers(so we won't whine), or steer them away from halfdotcom? After what I read here I will never order from half again. I placed four different orders from half last year, and had to file a complaint on two of them. So, I have one claim left? I just made two seperate orders two days ago. BS-I'll do a chargeback if they don't show up. Like I CARE if I can't shop on halfdotcom anymore if they don't back up the buyers by refunding on no shows. Shoot, if everyone who ran out of their alloted claims did chargebacks, halfdotcom wouldn't be allowed to accept credit cards anymore, they'd be over their limit allowed by the credit card companies!
Well, thanks for opening up my eyes. Besides, it's BS that I get charged more for shipping than what the sellers get compensated for.

toki.....

you have decided to visit the boards in the midst of a problem with "new seller"...these folks came on board to sell textbooks for super low prices with virtually no intention of supplying product.... "a scam"...

99%of these now NARU sellers, were registered since May, low prices, 0 to superlow feedback, never left feedback for others. Basic economics class says let the buyer beware...

on this site as well as any other site that acts as a liason between buyer and seller...part of the responsibility is to be a smart shopper....

does your seller provide delivery confirmation, does he answer your question before the sale????

it doesn't matter what site like this one you shop at....
educate yourself...

if its too good to be true, DON't buy......

Let me add to Nalasgma's advice. The three claim limit is one of those "may lead to suspension" things. As it has been noted elsewhere, the claims against NARU's (No longer A Registered User)don't count. The limit is there to prevent the scams from going the other way.
As to the shipping, Half deducts a flat fee from the seller's shipping. Amazon and eBay do it as a percentage of the total sale. What's the difference? The cost of buying or selling is what it is in either case.

Those of you who sell on halfdotcom, have you ever bought on halfdotcom? It is not the responsibility of the buyer to determine if they'll be scammed before they make a purchase. How is a buyer going to know FOR SURE that they'll receive their books? The two books I didn't receive last year were from sellers that are still selling here now. They had well over one hundred thousand feedback at the time. I'm supposed to know that if the book I order isn't in stock, that I have to harrass the seller, and finally resort to a claim to get my money back? Or that if I dare do a chargeback, I may not be able to buy or sell there? I don't think so.
The only reason I came to this board, is because I frequent the other boards. I figured, I just bought from halfdotcom, why not check out this board? Wow, thank goodness I did! The way some of you people put others down for complaining. -- I bought a book, and didn't receive it, what do I do? --ANY place else on the web: --Call your credit card company, and do a chargeback.-- Here? --Wow, aren't you a halfwit for buying on half and then expecting a book?--GET REAL PEOPLE.

I could go on and on, but I'm sure this is all falling on deaf ears.

As far as the shipping goes, I paid more for shipping than the allowance the sellers get. PLUS, halfdotcom takes a percentage of the sale price. That is a big difference from ebay.

Perhaps halfdotcom should do what barnes and noble online does-they don't take your money until the items are shipped. They just put a hold on your credit card for the amount. You can cancel an order up until it's shipped. But, I suppose the sellers would get scammed then. It's a shame, halfdotcom sounded like such a great place to get a good deal.

Halfdotcom has more responsibility to their buyers than they allow with their "three claims only" "once per month" policy that NO ONE ever reads until they have a problem. They just can't stand back and charge you for a purchase, keep the money, and say "you are over your limit" for lifetime claims. They don't pay people for a long time when you sell something on halfdotcom, why can't they just refund the money they are holding anyway? They can't hide behind that policy.Has anyone lost money over fraud they refused to reimburse?

toki,

I wouldn't be so naive to give advice on successful textbook buying if I wouldn't have done it myself.....

just because we are predominately sellers does not mean that many of us don't make purchases here or on any other internet site....
when I textbook shop....I search the entire internet for the best price...the books I needed 3 of them the best price was on Half.com. Two others I purchased from an ebay seller.

I contacted the buyers before I bought confirmed condition etc. I had two shipped media mail because they were in states close to my own...the third expedited because it was across the country...and I know from tracking packages I send via media mail with delivery confirmation how long it takes.

have I ever been burned on a book purchase. Yes, on ebay proper.....I've never been reimbursed because it was a paypal transaction...the seller cleared out his account before he went NARU.....so, yes, I'm owed money...will I get it nope. It was a fiction book with a low cost, but I am still annoyed at myself.
Did I follow my own guidelines...yup, did I get burned anyway, yup, will I buy anything on ebay again....sure will....

Do I think half.com is perfect nope.....plenty of room for improvement...

half.com is a great place to get a deal....

...and yes, buyers need to take some responsiblity for their actions...just like sellers do....

Nalasgma, I understand what you're saying. Of course people get burned over internet purchases. And buyers don't understand how long media mail can take. But when something does go wrong, halfdotcom should back up their buyers. I mean, it's not very complicated when it comes to non-receipt of a book.

Also, SOME sellers on halfdotcom outright lie in their descriptions, regarding delivery confirmation and their 'fast shipping'. Totally misleading. Who really expects to have a question answered timely by someone who has over 100 pages of books on sale, and tens of thousands of feedback? I don't.

Anyways, hopefully halfdotcom will get fixed. It's a great idea, and I don't mean to bash the honest sellers. Just wish there was a way to KNOW you'll get your books, or at least a refund if not in stock! (And NOT by having to research sellers for over an hour to see who might actually send you your book).

most policing done on this site....is by other site users....I spend a good 30/40 minutes each day...reporting listing violations predominately in the textbook area....with ie's for hardcovers.....

half.com has done an much improved job taking down these listings....but most of the site cleanup is initiated by other users....

Well...I hate to say this, but the replies I've received are making me think twice about not shopping on halfdotcom anymore. I may not like the policies, but it sounds like there are good, honest sellers out there. I guess I just need to watch out for scammers, just like on ebay(where I shop a lot!). Though I still feel sorry for the buyers who don't know to do that yet.

Nasalgma, it's good to know there's people out there like you that are trying to make half better. I must say, I just went into shock when I read half's horrible policy. But I've gotten over that, especially since you people are all so nice here! This is THE nicest board I have posted on. All the others slam you-going off topic to try to prove who's smarter. So annoying. Anyways, thanks guys/gals and keep up the good work :)

Cathysports-
The three claims and you're out was set up to protect sellers from scamming buyers. It does have the 'may' disclaimer and it appears that they are ignoring the limit for anyone who bought from a seller who is NARU (No longer A Registered User). They are also speeding up the refund processing time for NARU's. If you feel you have been scammed, by all means follow the procedures for a refund and you will receive it.

The normal time length on refunds is to give them time to investigate your claim and get a response from the seller. Several of our regulars have had problems with buyers who file claims or do credit card charge backs even though the seller has sent the item and has proof of delivery. We wish that there were neither seller nor buyer scammers, but they exist and the system, as creaky as it is, was set up to protect everyone from both.

I purchased a textbook from a seller who shortly thereafter was stripped of selling privileges due to really bad feedback. Now I've never received the book, sent two messages to the seller who has never replied, and have tried to file a claim, but can't. There's no way to get in touch with half.com and I'm getting really frustrated. I want to get my money back. How do I do this?

I purchased a book from jacibooks aug 20th. wasnt able to file a claim till around the 10th of september, which at what point seller was NARU. @ time, seller had over 300 pos. feedback. Still no money refunded from half.com. I only have a few moredays to do a chargeback on my credit card, and I just called customer servce and they said could be up to another 30-60 days. Do they really expect me to wait for their response, which could be no refund at all or do a charge back from my credit card company, which I will forsure get refunded my $70 some dollars. I will NEVER shop on half.com and if they want to shut down my ebay account, go right ahead, I'll at least get my $70 back. If they were any good at all, they should be able to tell me where they are with the claim process, but to tell someone whos already waitied almost two months to wait another two, extremely poor HORRIBLE customer service and I truly hope half.com goes out of business, sad deal for those truthful sellers...who are being hurt more than me by these scammers and half.coms inability to deal with business transactions!!!

What to do? I need help.

I purchased a book on ebay through an auction. I have not received the book and its been two weeks. I asked the Seller the status of my order and she has not been cooperative. All I want to know is the date she sent the book. She keeps remarking that I did not purchase insurance. What are more options. On top of that she's resorted to e-mail wars and tells me I'm uptight. All I want to know is the status of my order and I guess that makes me uptight...hmmm.

Some communications from Ebay member:

"This is the only time I have had t odeal with any such problem as
this.
I have sent e mail after e mail to you.
What proof do you wamt?
I certainly do not keep all my e mails.
You can leave Negative Feedback if you want!
I have never dealt with such a uptight person.
Read the description... it says NOT RESPONSIBLE IF INSURANCE IS NOT
PURCHASED!

Welcome to half.com!

We're not ebay, but I will try to help you.

Did you pay via PayPal?
If you did, then file a claim with paypal when you can, or I believe you have ebay buyers protection, but I am not sure.

The seller must have some form of tracking or delivery confirmation, or hopefully ebay/paypal will side with you.

Best of luck!

LoriAnn,

Do you realize this is the Half.com board. The claim/refund policies are not the same as they are on eBay. You should research eBay buer protection so you can file a claim for item not sent, though media mail (if that's how it went out) CAN take more than two weeks.

Good luck.

Half.com is horrible. They pulled a legitimate product with a valid UPC code and original packaging claiming the product violates copyright? That's messed up. Moreover, I could file a class action lawsuit if Geffen Home Video has taken a product that was legitimately purchased and arbitrarily decided to change its status. Half.com never addresses the issues or admits they made a mistake. I found two misspellings in the text of the message and the rude, half.com CUSTOMER SERVICE? gal was like: you never make spelling mistakes? What does that have to do with my problem and how are you going to fix it? Smartass.:_|

I sell thousands of items a year on Half.com and Ebay, but when I have a problem (usually caused by the aformentioned), I have to use their Live Help which is never helpful in resolving the issue. I've also attempted to list and submit products that Half.com doesn't have in their database. It never results in them actually listing the item; thus rendering the item I purchased for resale, virtually worthless. Please someone create a company that actually cares about its sellers, buyers....its customers!!! EBAY needs to be taken down a notch. And, since the company is making millions, couldn't they invest in some actual customer service reps? This live help thing is just there way of blowing off their customers and increasing their profit margains. I'm all for profitability, but not at the expense of your customers. Just look at Dell.

I think it is a travesty that BUYERS are limited to one Claim per month and three per lifetime.

I just made my first half.com purchase and the SELLER doesn't answer emails and never sent my book. I did file a claim. Now I wait.

In my experience it is the seller who should be under the microscope. this has been a horrible experience.
