The fault is with Half. The catalog has some glaring weaknesses ... perhaps the biggest of which is that we cannot suggest corrections or additions to it, but have to match what it offers us or not sell the item.

List your book elsewhere.

Well... depending on the item, the fault is with Muze... the database eBay/HDC uses to get their data from.

It is half.com's fault....

They KNOW there are issues with the Muze catalog.

As a business, if you know you are using a faulty product and continue to use it in light of its deficiencies ....

(Just glad its not steel, or hospital equipment etc. etc....)

I disagree.

It is Muze's fault, and I have shown proof.
eBay only subscribes to Muze, and Muze does not update their information or correct errors.

Any site that ONLY subscribes to Muze (a Rovi company) will have the same errors.

Other sites subscribe to a supplemental database, or have in-house staff that correct data errors.

Ebay has "buy", and enjoys the sales from the mega sellers, and have focused on maximizing profit with minimal investment.

When I want to use my pocket knife, and it isn't sharp
it isn't my fault, eh?
the fact that I should sharpen it more often
or buy a better blade that holds an edge longer ...
definitely, my knife is at fault.

I like the philosophy.

We can discuss apples and oranges...

but we know that HDC/eBay Media is a catalog-driven site, based on the Muze database.

If eBay wants to fix what Muze won't fix... then eBay needs to subscribe to a supplemental database, or create a solution of their own.

In your example, you forgot... you could go buy another pocket knife. ;)

Exactomundo!

And the Muze catalog is a tool
that isn't too sharp
but eBay neither sharpens it
nor replaces it

which is why I tend to say it's eBay at fault,
not the tool.

Muze is KNOWN to be horrible.

eBay has been informed, and while they attempted to "talk to Muze" about being horrible, they have not given any further updates.

eBay is at fault for CONTINUING to use Muze, and not create their own database or subscribe to a competitor... but the main fault is that of the data provider.

Yes, I will agree eBay is also at fault here, as they prefer the "bottom line" over data integrity and accuracy.

I'm hoping that Rovi's aquisition of Muze will help fix the holes in their data offering.

You would call Muze "horrible" and then claim that you call them and discuss things and get information. I hope you understand they realize the things that you say about them publicly and further realize that they don't always give you the best info. Before ebay bought HDC, there was a process in place to add/correct the catalog. That no longer exists. Less than a year ago, staff posted a link to make corrections/additions but has since REMOVED THAT LINK. None of this has anything to do with Muze. It has everything to do with ebay/half.

I realize Muze is a database, not a catalog, and does not come in "print" form.

I don't care what "Muze" thinks, I care what "Rovi" thinks, as Rovi purchased Muze.

When eBay took over HDC, they also removed many categories for which the add/correct catalog was needed, including Everything Else.

Since eBay/HDC pays Muze for a database offering, eBay/HDC does have the right to let Muze know their concerns, comments, and complaints. No company that subscribes to the database can manipulate the database, unless they have the platform to do so. When eBay merged HDC with eBay Media, they removed such platform, and made HDC fit the eBay mold.

One can blame the subscriber... but the content provider is the guilty party. eBay is only guilty of not subscribing to a supplemental database, or creating their own to fill in the gaps.

Re: Incorrect ISBN?

Nov 3, 2009 7:41 PM
Can someone please help me? I am attempting to list a book to sell but it is saying I have an incorrect ISBN # but it is in fact correct. I have verified it on the book as well as the shipping information from when I got it and also from the company I bought it from. I am not sure what to do at this point, or if I can even list it without it or what to do. Thank you!

I don't think it really matters to the OP who is at fault.

Trainer, by "incorrect" do you mean it comes up as "No products found"?

If that is what you are talking about, it means it is not in Half.com's catalog and cannot be listed here.

You can, however, list it on eBay.

If you could come back and tell us the ISBN, we might be able to help you better.

post #11 If all of what you are saying is true, why then CAN you list a book on other websites that use Muze as their database provider and NOT be able to list the same book on HDC? You conveniently forgot to address the issue of why staff posted a link for additions and then removed it. These other websites have such a link AND IT WORKS. We would welcome staff to comment on this (instead of a misguided explanation) Staff, tell us why you posted a link for additions, then removed it with no explanation or announcement??.

Re: Incorrect ISBN?

I have posted in another thread the proof.

Any site that uses MUZE and MUZE ONLY has the same excact data that HDC/eBay Media has.

Sites that subscribe to a supplemental database have the corrected info.

HDC most likely removed the thread, because after the meeting with Muze, they realized how worthless Muze really is, and how firm their decision to not update as promised was.

You supposedly have your own "catalogue", why not call them yourself and get the answer? ;)
