Please Look At Feedback Before Buying!
Mar 19, 2006 04:59 AM
There are a lot of warnings from good folks in these postings about checking feedback before buying, but most of them are after-the-fact 'you should have' warnings. For that reason, I thought I'd start a thread with the title.
1. On half.dot, feedback of 97% or lower is a warning sign.
2. While it's sometimes a pain to look through the feedback of a large scale seller, if you need a book for class, you need to know that the neutral and negative feedback for a seller relates to slow shipping.
3. While it's not always easy for a first time seller to build up feedback, look to see how long they've been a member and if they ever used another name.
4. And, yes, this is easy for me to say, but why would you ever buy a $300 Xbox from someone with no feedback who promises to sell it for $100? Extraordinarily low prices are a warning sign when combined with little or no feedback.
5. Also, for those who read 4. and say 'What's wrong with a bargain?', I've got an unending supply of Rolex watches for $10 each. Send your $10 to rapscalion and he'll happily forward my cut.;)

Good Luck on your purchasing on halfdot and may you enjoy the hundreds of good transactions without a problem that I have had.

Well, this is an excellent post, and while point 5 is the most important, each point has real value.

On point 2, I'd add that bigtime sellers are notorious for not replying to email.

And look at a seller's feedback left for others. A seller who leaves very little feedback in proportion to what he receives is unlikely to answer email if there's a problem.

On the other hand, a seller with little feedback received but a lot left for buyers is a big warning sign, as scammers seem to leave bulk feedback as a way to encourage false positives from buyers who have not yet received their product.

Now, about those watches. Word is, they're going fast, folks, and just a few remain at these unbeatable prices. Hurry, hurry, hurry on down.

I agree that everyone should read feedback. However, I bought an item and the seller never replied to my emails and I filed a claim, and I have never heard back from the half.com people either about my claim. What should I do now?

Point 6: Buy only from people with feedback of 315.

takes approximately 30+ days from your claim to be resolved

merylberryl,

It apparently thakes 30-60 days to get your refund after filing, and you don't hear from them in the interim.

now see....i don't like saying that you shouldn't buy from a seller with low feedback....what about all the new sellers? They need a chance to get going to....anytime I am after a low priced item, I try to find a newer seller and give them a chance. Still their % has to be over 96...but, most of them have less than 200 feedbacks.

blue,
#3 is the key....

I have low feedback numbers, but I've been registered for a while...bought and sold for a number of years...

once you check out a number of sellers of really low priced--normally high ticket items, you'll get a feel for what fritz is talking about. a brand new seller with the lowest, and I mean way down there lowest, prices on the top200 list of books--would make me hesitate.
I chkd your feedback, you have a low feedback score but you have been a member for a while , have sold more books than you have gotten feedback for (typical for half customers) and the feedback you have gotten did not happen within 1day... I'd buy from you--

check out the discussions on scam sellers...you'll soon get a better feel of the issue

i like this, but the only problem is, the "discussion" boards on half.com is listed as "announcements". Not too many people will come to see that, unless they were looking for "$5 coupons" or "free shipping" or "the site will be down from 5pm til 9pm on february 30th".

they need a re-name...but like that would happen...

Hi, This is a great thread and I can't help putting in my 3 cents worth as usual.
First to the new person with low feedback. If you read any of the ebay "how to" books one of the first recommendations is to make several purchases of your own first and pay quickly, responsibly and be sure to leave feedback. This builds up your feedback score and maybe doesn't show how good a seller you might be but does give some insight into your character for others to review.
Also, my thoughts on how to review neg feedback. I also check to see how the person receiving the neg responded.
Did they accept the criticism if justified and offer recompense? Or did they offer a reasonable explanation for the problem? Or did they call the other person a liar, a cheat etc? If they did either of the first two, I will always give them an opportunity. If they did the last I will NEVER buy from them. I feel that if you can't treat your trading partner with respect you haven't earned my business.
I also highly repect people who leave followup comments that their problem was taken care of etc.

Well off my soap box and back to selling books and shampoo! :)

Na-na-nah, told you so, the feedback is up again, but Lord, I wish people would take rapscalion's advice and use the search.

fritzwm-k,

Um ... uh ... thanks for bringing this to our attention. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We are currently experiencing problems with our Rolex-rebate delivery system, which has always worked in the past.

Please be assured that we have forwarded information about this to our technical wizards, so we expect it to be fixed shortly.

If there is still a problem after, say, a year, will have George and Amy crack the whip. Then we'll see some action.

Thanks for allowing us to be of service,
Your Rolex-Rebate Delivery Team
