Requesting an addition or update to the catalog on Half.com

Jan 13, 2009 8:29 AM
Hello all,

I am posting this information on behalf of myself, Marni, Meredith, the Half.com team and the catalog team.

We wanted to update you with the catalog addition/correction issues that have been (as you know) a hot topic on the boards for quite some time. We hope that this post will help to clarify expectations and provide information that will be beneficial to you as you submit these requests through the website.

We all participated in a phone call directly with Muze to identify the issues that are impacting you as buyers and sellers. The call was beneficial to both parties as we were able to ask them questions we had with the current process as well as gain an understanding of what their processes entailed. We were also to identify gaps in the process that we can work with them to fill.

To request an addition to the catalog, you will need to complete the form associated with the media type of your item. (i.e. Book, VHS, CD, DVD, Game or Game System) It is important that the information entered is correct and complete. It is also very important to remember to enter in the complete ISBN or UPC code completely and correctly with no extra characters.

If you notice an error on a listing, you can submit a catalog update request (or a correction request) by using the request link at the bottom of the listing page. From here, you can select the specific portion of the listing that is inaccurate and provide the correct information.

Another important issue that we want to address is regarding additions/corrections to media no longer commercially available (or out of print). In these cases, since Muze is not able to verify the accuracy of the content submitted, they are not able to add or correct the data in the catalog.

Whether submitting an addition or correction request, you should see your request reflected on the site within 3-4 weeks. In cases where you do not see the information you submitted, this is most often due to unverifiable information, a typo, missing information, or the item being out of print.

If you have submitted a request with accurate and complete information for an item that is not out of print and do not see it added or corrected in the catalog after 4 weeks, please email me directly at:

Sadie@ebay.com

This will help us identify any problem areas still remaining and work with Muze to get them addressed. Please make sure to include all of the product information with your email.

We appreciate the members that have tirelessly provided feedback on the problems with the process. The posts made here were of great value in our discussions with Muze and we are excited about the progress that has and will continue to be made.

Thank you for your continued efforts.

-Sadie, Meredith and MarniSue

Requesting an addition or update to the catalog on Half.com

Jan 22, 2009 7:50 AM
Hello all,

I wanted to provide some clarification on submitting requests and making sure that the ISBN/UPC is entered correctly.

As stated above, ISBNs and UPCs need to be entered without any additional characters. We are working to get the submission page updated appropriately, but until let's take, for example - ISBN 123-1234567890

If someone requests an addition for this item and in the ISBN field enters:

ISBN 1231234567890 OR
ISBN 123-1234567890 OR
123-1234567890

The submission will be rejected because the Muze system will not recognize these as valid ISBNs. In order for the system to recognize the ISBN correctly, it would need to be entered as:

1231234567890

I hope this helps.

Sadie

Re: Requesting an addition or update to the catalog on Half.com

We recently completed a 6 month review of the catalog addition and correction processes. Half.com regularly adds and corrects hundreds of items from community reports. To better understand the community board discussion about our system, we have reviewed items not being added to the catalog or corrected and identified some common problems with these requests.

We found the most common reason for an item not being processed was incomplete or bad information. Many unprocessed reports were submitted with insufficient information. Please be sure to fill the form out completely and double check for accuracy.

When a report is processed, a listing is not being created in the catalog based solely on submitted information. The report is used to contact the publisher for more information regarding the product. As a result, items older than ten years or out of print items are not likely to be added to the catalog. Similarly, items that were published on a vanity press, by a private company for limited circulation, or for circulation amongst a group of association members are unlikely to be added. Examples are: print on demand books, cookbooks from a restaurant printed for local sale, items published by think tanks for limited distribution, and other such items that would not have been made available at major retail book stores.

Reports that include a URL link are more likely to be added to the catalog. If using Amazon as a reference, please keep in mind that books assigned only an AISN were listings created by Amazon without confirmation from a publisher. Half.com does not create listings for items which have not been vetted by the publisher. Items that are not in the catalog can be listed for sale on the eBay website. If four weeks have passed since your request was submitted, it is likely the item is not being added or corrected. At that point, please consider listing the item in one of eBay’s many book categories which can be accessed from this link:

Meredith
