Ron, I think that it sounds like you've done enough and more than most do, to get the records into the hands of the family.

All too often families dispose of this type of item/thing without a second thought and it's better off being in the hands of someone who will archive it and use it to record the history.

If I'm going to toss something like that with personal info on it, it will definitely be shredded first, I don't want it coming back like a bad penny. Nor do I want my identity stolen (again.)

*************** What follows is sig line*************
I collect fine cannon models (patent, arsenal, salesman, maker's, presentation), mug-type brass/copper gunpowder measures, artillery sights/quadrants/shot gauges, cannon firing flintlocks, percussion locks, early artillery books, manuscripts, artillery projectiles, original cannon barrels, etc.

thank you guys - i watched a cousin dumps her father's life in a dumpster- i salvaged what i could but it was so sad.- these records i found - a place called urban ore in berkekley salvage -antiques anything and everything depending on what day it is- never the same twice-the place i found most of this stuff.i would fear the information may be used by some - what i'm going to do with what little i have of may fathers is donate the marine corp museum in quantico- photos and a recording of him form a radio station when he was on the missouri- when macarthur accepted the japanes surrender- they recorded service mens message's home - its on a record- then they sent the home to the family-he had been at bougenville-he spent 30 years in the usmc.- i also have dozens of personel letters to a service man to a girl back home and her letters back to him - i know some students of colleges are doing studies of ww2 history should i try and contact one of these groups about the letters-aybe they could use them- thank you again for your ans's

>donate the marine corp museum in quantico

I can't tell if you already donated them or not-if you did, fine, good for you.. If not you might want to call them first and see if they accept that kind of material. I know we all would tend to think they'd be happy to get it, but all museums have storage limitations and many don't accept certain kinds of things. Call before you send, I suggest.

This is good advice. I sometimes send old photos to historical societies in the areas where the photos were taken. At first I usually didn't inquire whether they would accept the photos or not. One time a society actually mailed the photos back to me, saying they were not of interest. So since then I have always asked first.

I have a lot of similar stuff. My uncle is gone, my aunt is gone and their unmarried, childless daughter (much older than I) is in a nursing home with dementia. There's no one left but me and I can't see keeping it all. I've done my best to find anyone with any connection to the items he had, or a museum, but a lot of it is redundant with stuff they already have and can't use. I've been putting some of it up here. There's a limit to what anyone can keep and there should be no guilt in selling it to collectors groups or re-enactors.

I have a book called The First American Army by Bruce Chadwick. Most Revolutionary books focus on the officers and leaders. He spent a lot of time collecting letters and journals from regular soldiers and their families and piecing together a tremendous story of their experiences. We may think that everything that could be written or filmed about WW II has been done, but we would have thought that before Band of Brothers came out. I'd like to think that someday these collected items could be someone's inspiration.
