Military stuff - Is any of this stuff collectible?
Jul 3, 2012 07:47 PM

I have a few boxes of miliary stuff that I'm trying to sort though.  I am lost.  Is any of this stuff collectible or should I just list it in a couple of big lots?

Here are some of the things I've found so far....

A few Navy hats can't tell the age

Post cards from Paris in 1914

A 1919 accounting text book.  Inside of the cover is his name and it says "General Accounting Office Navy Department Division Washington, D.C.".  The strange part is that the first three pages are typed assignements and grades and all assignements are in the book.  The books is held together by a string on the inside.  This is from when he worked as an auditor for the Navy.

A certificate from 1914 saying that he is now a member of the "Amercian Flag House and Betsy Ross Memorial Association"

A small booklet that says "Report of the part taken by the Fifth Division in the St. Mihil Operation September 11th to September 15th (inclusive) 1918 Under Command of Majot General John E McMahon U.S.A"

Armband with a patch that probably meant something

An ID card from 1917 for American Expeditionary Forces

A gasoline ration card

Typed letters from 1940 about the "Military Order of the World War".

A year book and handwritten diary from 1942 when at school at Virginia Polytechnic

A 1941 letter about a request to re-enlist.  Appointment Letter from 1942 and other misc letters to and from the military

Personal handwritten letters from other soldiers thanking his mom for her hospitality and letters from friends

It probably has more sentimental value to the family that it has monetary as a military collectible.

Unfortunately the only descendent has no interest in any of it.  What I am unable to sell for her she is going to toss.  It's sad.

If the goal is to sell, it is best to keep everything together and sell as an entire lot.  It retains more of its value if all the pieces stay together.

I tend to agree, this is more interesting as a job lot.  The Navy caps and the armband with a patch might be interesting.  Can we see those?

Sure I'll take some pictures.

The hats are army and not navy.  I have another hat that I don't what it is.

The armband I figured out is for Civil Defense Police.

Armband looks like civil defense.

Overseas hats are post-war from the Americal Legion/VFW

Nest to last is an Army Lt.

Last is an Army peaked cap.

GADGETGIRL, it is extremely rare to find documentation/any paper that is collectible...or valuable. Unless you have a first edition in superb condition of a well known/in demand book, ectremely old currency or something original signed by a founding father...autographs are worth rarely anything anymore. Even continental currency is not worth much, so unless you have a copy of A hand written letter signed by Ben Franklin, or maybe the Declaration, or monroe doctorine original copy....for now you are sol.

Are you sure the final hat is not a AAF crusher cap/visor?
