This Day In History

I thought a thread like this might be fun. If you would like to add a post to this thread, please make sure your event happened on the current day in history. Ok?
I'll get it started with an event for today...
This day in history:
August 19, 1812, the U.S. Navy frigate, the "Constitution" caught the British warship "Guerrière" alone about 600 miles east of Boston in a fierce battle off the coast of Nova Scotia. Witnesses of this battle said the British shot merely bounced off the Constitution's sides, as if the ship were made of iron rather than wood.
Enjoy and have a great day, everyone!!! ;0)

Hi robin, On August 20, 1866, the newly organized National Labor Union called on Congress to mandate an eight-hour workday. A coalition of skilled and unskilled workers, farmers, and reformers, the National Labor Union was created to pressure Congress to enact labor reforms. It dissolved in 1873 following a disappointing venture into third-party politics in the 1872 presidential election. Although the National Labor Union failed to persuade Congress to shorten the workday, its efforts heightened public awareness of labor issues and increased public support for labor reform in the 1870s and 1880s.

August 20, 1866 was a busy day. It was also the day the Andrew Johnson formally declared the Civil War over (to account for the extended service in Texas). On August 20, 1896 the dial telephone was patented. An important step for us Internet users Finally for the sprots buffs, on August 20, 1974 Nolan Ryan had a pitch recorded at 100.4 mph. Doug

I TRY! But stupidity isn't THAT easy to come up with. Actually, I wonder if anyone is even hardly ON this board anymore. Bothon has returned *REPORT* *REPORT* I think I will go *report* MYSELF, just for the hell of it. I wonder what kind of eBay email a person gets, as a result? Maybe I will get a posting ID and start arguments with everybody, just to liven things up!

I shouldn't be "Jumping the Gun" for tommorrow, but I can remember I was sitting watching TV on the evening of the 30th, 1997, and there are special reports coming on all networks, about a car crash in Paris; involving injuries, and Princess Di. The first thought I have, is that she is dead, or that they already suspect it was not going have a good outcome. Two hours or so later, they announce she has died. It's probably a "woman" thing, to have been caught up in watching the events at that time - concerning her passing; but I was very very sad for her children, especially. The thing I remember most, is how it took FOREVER to get the poor woman to the hospital, and we are talking a famous person who was injured in a major city of the world, with a hospital minutes away. She slowly bled to death and they couldn't fix it - too late. In this country, she would have been there in 15 minutes, tops. Any of you who have traveled and have had to obtain emergency medical care, know it's like the a return to the 1960's or 70's, at best, when you need attention outside the U S. Just another reason, even in these semi-bad economic times: we can be grateful we have it pretty good, all things considered.

Hi, I remember where I was too, that was really sad. I just got home from Paris in July and she died a few weeks later. I thought it wasn't really happening when the news came on. I was really sad for her children too, I still feel sad that there wasn't more of a fuss made over the fact that it happened. No one has really made the same effort to fill in at all the charities she has left behind I've been to London a few times, I think there is still a sense of loss, I wish someone could pick up where she left off. I think the hospitals are really old there too
