I love this thread!!! When we bought our first house two years ago, I started by looking at each room and deciding on the feel I wanted for it.
For example, dining room I wanted elegant/formal and I knew I wanted the walls red.
In my stepdaughter's room I wanted sunny, fun and eclectic style so I went with an orange serbet color with slightly darker sponge paint over it. I collect hanging fish art...so hung that from the ceiling and my step daughter loves anime(which really looks good with the orange background).
Master bath I wanted a french wine country feel so started with a leaf green paint and sponged on several shades of purple including a very dark purple...added white vases and white shower curtain and of course, art of wine country...would like to add crown molding/lighted at some point..
You get the idea tho...picture the style and feel of the room then select colors to compliment...we like modern contempory and I'm an abstract artist, so we kept the living room and foyer area ultrapure white to show off my art(and the art I collect from others.
Hope this helps! What a fun thread! Oh and my favorite decorating mag is Metropolitan Home
Warm Regards,
Pam
