How do you find a good painter for interiors?

Apr 1, 2003 9:39 PM
I recently hired a company to do painting repair after a fire. The first guy did such poor quality work I had to fire the company; his supervisor didn't seem to notice that the guy's work was terrible.

Hired a second guy to redo the first guy's work. He did a better job but left a bunch of stuff not done and seems not to want to come back and fix the problems.

Now I'm faced with having to hire yet a third person to finish up; it involves things like fixing dripped paint (how you do that I don't know), painting spots where the paint didn't cover the surface, fixing spots where two wet pieces stuck together, and like that.

This time, I'd like to find somebody decent. How in the world do you find a good painter?

Your best bet in finding a good painter is by word of mouth. Ask friends whose homes you may have admired, or ask at work. Since you have had bad experiences, go and see the work of a prospective painter. You also need to be on site some of the time the work is being done, to make sure the floors are covered and that preparation work is being done properly. By now you probably know what to look for. I hope you don't pay these guys all up front!

Peesha, thanks, have several people to call today looking for recommendations.

Company No. 1 has not been paid and won't be until all repairs to their work have been paid for.

Co. No. 2 has been partly paid, so I guess we'll call it even. They don't finish the job, they don't get the rest of the money.

I have learned from this experience not to take anything for granted. Such as:

Don't expect painters to use drop cloths, remove hinges and hardware, immediately clean up spills, remove removable shelves before painting them (first guy painted kitchen pantry shelves in place; when removed they took some of the wallboard with them); paint the doorjambs after they remove bifold doors to paint the doors; and I could go on.

Basically, looks like anybody can call himself a painter until proved otherwise.

Call some local interior decorators. Believe, they know who is good and who isn't. Ditto for paint dealers - at our Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore stores here, the sales guys all know who sucks and whose good. Don't know how they know (word back from homeowners?), but they do.

Actually, I called my friendly neighborhood Sherwin- Williams store today and got three names; called them all and am waiting for call backs.

Another gaffe to add to my list:

Don't expect painter to actually have tools on him, such as a flat-head screw-driver. ("The reason I painted the paper towel holder instead of removing it like you asked me to is because I did not have a FHSD.")

Another required line from the painter's handbook: "I didn't do that. The guy who painted it last must have done that."

Be very specific in your instructions to the painter, too, even going so far as to make a list of these things that haven't been done/need to be redone. Do a walk-thru before the painter gives you a quote. Write it down...write it all down. Have a contract.

And hire a woman.

A couple more ideas.

Check with the local better business bureau before hiring anybody to do that sort of work.

Ask friends and neighbors in your area who have hired a painter.

Cherry-pie, I did everything you mention except hire a woman! Will try that next, if I can find one.

Loblolly, tried asking friends but got nowhere. Paint store recommended three guys. First one came to walk thru the job but never called back with an estimate (anyway, he made me nervous talking about his religion instead of the job); second one told me I was being "too picky" and he didn't want the job. (Although he did point out some badly painted areas that I had missed.) Third one never showed up for the walk through and the estimate.

Back to the yellow pages.

Try Lowes or Home Depot. They send out a lot of contractors who are dependent on these stores for work so they do a good, efficient job. And, you get follow-up calls and/or cards asking if you were satisfied.

I have heard this so much from clients of mine about regular painters. I run a faux finish company (for 23 years) and have heard plenty of awful stories. I think the best like mentioned here is checking with the big paint companys like Frazee, Dunn Edwards, Benj. Moore..have them come out give an estimate..then check at least 3 of their references and hopefully you find a good one.
I wish you the best! JoanAnn

Hi there! I hate to say this, and I mean no offense to
you guys out there, but I think you should try hiring a
female housepainter. I have my own painting business, and
you would not believe how many people are relieved to
discover that a woman is going to be doing the job. Women
are usually more detail-oriented, and usually not as
sloppy with the drips and runs. I say "usually" because
there are many talented male housepainters out there,
just not here in my neck of the woods! I have had to fix
many a mess that a male housepainter has made! Also, you
need to make sure the products the painter uses are of
high quality.(I use Sherwin Williams products). And yes,
your local paint store can be very helpful in steering
you towards a good painter. Make sure she has a license
and liability insurance and ask to see proof that she has
these. Good Luck! Linda

Go to your local paint store. You can ask if they know any local contractors that due residential work. ALWAYS before you let ANYONE work on your home, check the contractors record with the state Better Business Br. Also ask the contractor for proof of insurance before he climbs on a ladder in your home. NEVER lend them a ladder of yours. If they do not have what they need, then YOU don't need them! On the mind of insurance, if the contractor doing work in or out side of your home has "HELP" MAKE him/her provide proof of workers comp. insurance on each worker! This way the individual worker cannot make claim on your homeowners insurance for injury. Check with your homeowner's policy agent to better understand your risks and rights.

There are companies that specialize in AFTER FIRE/FLOOD DAMAGE. Check with your local insurance agent. They should be able to recommend someone like "SERVE-PRO"

Hello Meow! It would;d seem to me if you had a fire and this is an insurance claim issue that there were guidelines set by them for the painting repairs? Can you enlist their help? Also, although the BBB is a grand resource, a company is not listed with them until after completing one (successful) year in business. That is a good thing/bad thing imho.

My business has two divisions, one is housekeeping and the other is home maintenance/repair. We accept no new business prior to providing a written quote and a contract to the prospective customer that ultimately both parties sign. You can write your OWN contract clearly stating the work to be accomplished enabling you recourse if the job is not done to the specified terms.

The concept that anyone can paint is not valid. There are many considerations and a painter who knows their business will discuss in detail with you all the aspects of the job to be preformed. From surface prep, materials used, possible problems and their resolutions, clean up, time duration of job etc. Demand information and complete disclosure - do not settle for less! At the very least, check the company's license and get a copy of their certificate of insurance.

Best of luck to you - let us know how it turns out!
Mc:)

meow,

i agree! hire a female painter. i have been painting now for 20 years, as i own my own business. i have had 3 employees in that time (all male) and fired all of them. they did not do the job well enough for me.they were all quite sloppy!

i am rather anal about my job, but i sure get told the same thing over and over: "you are so neat and tidy". i think woman painters tend to think differently than men. i have been known to clean a whole room before i start to paint. clean start, clean finish!

this is not meant to be a slam to all male painters, but i think women are more attuned to what another woman wants. especially when it comes to the homefront.

good luck!!

:)
