Mid-July Designer, Artisan Category Changes

May 10, 2005 4:07 PM
Mid-July Designer, Artisan Category Structure Changes

In response to feedback from the Community, we are updating the Designer, Artisan Jewelry Category in mid-July by renaming it to Designer Brands and moving artisan products (including lampwork) into other categories.

Please look through our proposed changes below and provide us with feedback on the boards through 5/25/05. Our team will be reading and responding to threads during that time.

To view the proposed Designer Brands structure, please click here.

What we are proposing

The listings in Designer, Artisan Jewelry contain different types of products, designer brands and artisan products (including lampwork). We have heard from the Community that buyers and sellers are confused by the fact that both kinds of products are included here. We have also heard that buyers are confused about where to look for artisan products, in the Designer, Artisan Jewelry category or in other Jewelry & Watches categories like Bracelets, Earrings, Necklaces & Pendants, etc. So, we are proposing the following:

• We are renaming the Designer, Artisan Jewelry category to Designer Brands and breaking it out by specific designers like David Yurman and James Avery.

• We are adding product type subcategories (e.g., bracelets, earrings, etc.) under various brands where there are enough listings to support those subcategories.

• We are moving the existing Lampwork subcategories into new Lampwork subcategories created in Bracelets, Earrings, and Necklaces & Pendants. Please click on the proposed Designer Brands Structure to see where those Lampwork subcategories will go.

• We are eliminating the Gold and Silver subcategories and moving them into “Other” categories.

What we need to know from you

• Please review the list of proposed brands and let us know if there are any more that you would like us to consider adding. Please keep in mind that we generally need sufficient listing counts before we can develop a subcategory for those listings.

What is the impact on buyers and sellers?

• When the changes go live in mid-July, listings in the existing Gold and Silver subcategories will be moved to “Other” subcategories in Designer Brands. At the time of the rollout, sellers should think about new places to list their items (including Stores Fixed Price Good Until Canceled Listings). Otherwise, these listings will continue to go in “Other” subcategories. We will provide you with the list of new category IDs before the changes go live.

• These changes may require buyers to recreate some of their saved/favorite searches. We will send directions on how to revise search strings when the changes rollout in mid-July.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the overall strategy of the Jewelry & Watches team in proposing these and possible future category structure changes?

A: The Jewelry & Watches team seeks to improve the buyer browsing experience to help buyers find items more efficiently and effectively.

Q: Why aren’t you including more designer brands?

A: To create brand subcategories, we need a large number of listings for that particular brand. As subcategories populate, we will consider adding more brands to this category.

Q: Why aren’t you including the same list of product types under every brand in your proposals for Designer?

A: For each brand, we have included only those product types that have a large number of listings for those specific products. As categories populate, we will add more product types as well as brands.

Q: Could I update my category number once the changes go live?

A: If your item has received no bids or purchases and does not end within 12 hours, you can revise the category number. If your item has received a bid, a purchase, or ends within 12 hours, you can only add a second category (i.e., the new category number in addition to the old category number).

Q: Where can I see a list of the new category numbers?

A: We will provide a link to category numbers for new categories on the boards approximately 2 weeks before the changes are scheduled to go live.

Q: How can I best prepare for the proposed category changes?

A: Review the proposed changes and use the new category number (when applicable) when listing your items if/when the category changes have been made.

I am a jewelry designer and very small potatoes compared to the "great names", but there is a problem with where to put the things I design already and your proposed changes sound like they will make things even tougher. I use fine metals with gemstones - sometimes odd ones like nunderite - or feature vintage glass, much of it vintage lampwork - or a combination of gemstones, glass, and crystal both new and old. They are not reproductions.

The only categories in which I could put these things were the Artisan Lampwork, Beaded - they are artisan designed and were beaded - or one of the vintage categories, but that isn't correct because they only use some vintage materials and are new designs. Sounds like I won't have any category where I can put my things except in an OTHER category and who is going to check OTHER? OTHER is too broad and it sounds like something that went out with the trash.

Not happy...

~Belle

Mid-July Designer, Artisan Category Changes

May 10, 2005 11:02 PM
Dear belle*dame and beadhappys,

Thank you for thoughts. In our conversations with buyers of artisan and lampwork products we heard that buyers were confused as to where to look for artisan products. For example, if they were looking for a pair of Earrings, they were confused as to whether they should look in the Earrings category or Designer, Artisan or another category. First and foremost, though, many were looking for a pair of earrings and discovered different artisan styles and materials along the way. We believe that combining artisan products into Rings, Earrings, Necklaces & Pendants, Bracelets and Pins, Brooches etc. will make the buying experience easier and bring more buyers to your products.

Rather than listing your items in Other, I would suggest listing them first in the product type (for example, Earrings or Bracelets) and then with the primary style type. We have added additional categories to accomodate this change. Please check out the changes to Rings, Earrings, Bracelets, Necklaces & Pendants and Pins, Brooches to find the most appropriate place for your items.

I look under Artisan offerings for handmade by the seller jewelry, this is going to make it much harder to find and sell.

oh no! please don't do this.

I make and sell gemstone beaded jewelry and lumping my stuff into those already overloaded categories, will make my items get 'lost'.

Please don't do this. Can you create a separate category for hand-worked items in some other way so that buyers looking for hand-crafted items stand out better?

btw...I tried listing many items in the generic 'earrings or bracelets or necklaces' categories and never got any bids. It wasn't until I started using the artisan category, that I started to get noticed and began building up a clientele. How about a "Handcrafted" sub-category or 'Independent designers' sub-category...something that will tell the buyers immediately that they are getting a handcrafted one of a kind item.

i am a seller on ebay. . .i sell expensive designer jewelry. . .items from neiman marcus, tiffany & company,
cartier, van cleef & arpels, saks fifth avenue, bergdorf goodman. ..fine jewelry salons. . ..etc. .I sell a lot of yurman and john hardy too. . . .i find it very frustrating when my items get thrown in the mix with $15. sterling bracelets. . . . .I APPLAUD THE CHANGES YOU ARE PROPOSING
and hope that you will add categories for designers such as Cynthia Bach, Elizabeth Locke, Stephen Dweck, Jean Mahie', Henry Dunay, Charles Turi, and numerous other high end jewelry designers whose masterpiece collections deserve special attention on the secondary market.
I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR ALL THAT YOU ARE DOING TO IMPROVE THE DESIGNER JEWELRY CATEGORY. . .

Hi E-Bay, Sellers, Buyers!!!

Kelli Burns here from RaeRaine Designs.

I have spoken to Amy from E-Bay several times regarding the confusion buyers are having distinguishing "brand" - "artisan" and "manufactured" jewelry, whether it be Lampwork or metals. E-Bay is trying it's best to figure out how to categorize and whom is looking at these categories. I don't like the change from Designer/Artisan to Designer Brand because of the uniqueness of my designs (and other designs out there). Such as, I only use Artisan lampwork on my designs BUT there are Chinese, etc...lampwork that is called "handmade" we all know there is a difference but our clients do not...

E-Bay is trying to help us! However it is almost impossible to list ALL categories or sub-categories, the search would be, could be endless.

AND sellers are guilty of listing in the wrong categories to get "better" hits on their listings!

So instead of beating up E-Bay for trying to help us find an enhanced way to support our "distinctive" designs, SUGGEST something.

Proposed changes will not go through till July and E-Bay is SEEKING input, ideas, suggestions from it's sellers. Call them, WRITE, POST!!!!!
Here is your chance to make a difference!
Where do you want your jewelry? What works best for you? Where do you get the most bids, most hits, etc?
Tell E-Bay what you want...

Just my two cents. I could be wrong but it's better than just complaining.
Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
Kelli Burns

I don't see Cartier? Additionally, Diamonds and Gemstones should be a catagory at the third level of necklaces/pendants. Presenlty, under Gemstones, you do not have Onyx as an option. We recommend you provide item specifics for all rings under fine jewelry -to allow for better search refinement for ebay customers.
Finally, allowing for "circa" or antique, vintage, estate as a sub-catagory for any fine jewelry.

I propose under the DESIGNER category to change "OTHER" sub cat to:

OTHER DESIGNERS

  • sub cat: necklaces

  • sub cat: bracelets

  • sub cat: earrings

The little guys are NOT benefiting from this proposed change. My customers want "designer jewelry" not "hand-crafted/artisan items" and that is the way I would like to continue to market myself.

I would like to see a separate category for independent artisan jewelry. There is a lot of talent on ebay by the little guy/gal. They are the ones that really need the exposure and lumping them into other categories will just kill their sales. EBAY: please create something for the small studio artist trying sell their wares too. Please don't lump their work into a hugh category like necklaces, bracelets, etc.
