Re: Questions About Jewelry Policy - Please Ask Here

Ummm,
"Q: Can I describe a CZ as a diamond stimulant ?"

The Jewelry board had a long and slightly off-color discussion before about "Diamond Stimulant". Porki, where are you when we need you? I think eBay means "Diamond Simulant" ?
[Old New Yorker cartoon of a v. rich old gentleman walking down the street w/ a curvy young woman. She is looking intently in a jewelry store window. He says, "Now, Miss Simmons, let's not put the cart before the horse." I believe that is a "Diamond Stimulant".

"Q: Do I need to put "created" before the gemstone to be in compliance?"
eBay replies with the terms "created, man-made, lab-created, manufactured, simulated..." No, simulated refers to something that imitates a gemstone. A lab-created sapphire is a sapphire, chemically and physically. It is not a substance pretending to be some other substance. This is important because some confused sellers say it the other way, that a stone is a "synthetic" ruby, say, when it is really glass imitating ruby.

Questions About Jewelry Policy - Please Ask Here

Is eBay depending on reports by their members to report violations of the new policy? And if so, why?.. Why can't eBay simply type "diamond cz" in the "Advance Search", for example, and then end the listings who use this term without the required qualifiers? We have been discussing this for about a year now! Isn't it about time that eBay shows the world that it (eBay) is serious about banning these deceptive listings?

Also the form for reporting is annoying and confusing. Would you mind explaining to everyone here the exact steps to report a violation of the new policy? Here is the link:

Link

For example, if a member wants to report a listing with "cz diamond" (without the required qualifiers "simulated" or "imitation") what are the exact steps - in the link above - he or she must take to do so? Would you report such a violation as "Keyword Spamming" or as "Misleading Title"?..

And why is eBay apparently NOT taking action when these violations are reported, as evidenced by the same sellers listing and relisting with the same deceptive terms after these listings are reported to eBay?

I love vintage jewelry, especially vintage pearl because of quality of pearls from 1920-1970's. But when I browse vintage pearl jewelry there are _way_ too many brand new items showing up in mass quantity. These are mass produced same ol' same ol' items showing up as vintage/antique.

I don't know how you can limit these items, but isn't there any way to stop this practice? It would certainly make buying experience much more pleasant. Thank you.

Questions About Jewelry Policy - Please Ask Here

Feb 19, 2005 10:26 PM

Okay, here goes...

I posted the following in response to the FAQ, before they made it a read-only. I received a nice email from Lulu and was told I could repost it elsewhere. I chickened out, for fear of starting another tirade, but I'm going to go ahead and post it.

We recently had a discussion in a thread about the use of "emerald cut" for a qualifier. In that thread I suggested the use of a hyphen (emerald-cut) so it wouldn't come up in an "emerald" search.

Well... after reading thru this FAQ, I did a "gold" search. I couldn't tell you how many results were not gold, but "gold tone". I should have counted, but didn't. Suffice it to say that there were a lot.

IMHO - I think it would be a good idea to require that these sorts of qualifiers be hyphenated or used as one word: "goldtone", "gold-tone" or "gold-colored" but not "gold tone" or "gold colored"; "gold-plate", "gold-plated" or "GP" but not "gold plate" or "gold p" or "gold plt". etcetera. Also that the various cuts be hyphenated: "diamond-cut", "diamond-shaped", "emerald-cut", etc.

This brings up another point: If a seller uses "CZ Imitation Diamond", that is still going to come up in a diamond search. I thought part of all this commotion was to clean up searches, so buyers wouldn't be inundated with irrelevant results?

"The good news for CZ sellers is that CZ and cubic zirconia are top search terms." Then why do they have to use "diamond"? What on earth is wrong with calling a CZ... a CZ?

I've "heard" various CZ sellers say repeatedly that their customers know that CZ's aren't diamonds, that they know that CZ's are imitation diamonds. Then why use the "D" word?

And before I get attacked here: I have nothing against CZ sellers! I don't like diamonds, would take CZ over diamonds any day of the week. I just truly don't understand why that word has to be used.

If I search for "gold", I want to see "gold" listings. If I search for "diamond", I want to see "diamond" listings. Same goes for all the other gems and minerals. And now I'll shut up and go to my room...

Questions About Jewelry Policy - Please Ask Here

Are you going to be adding any Item Specifics to some of the categories that don't have them, or add to what is already available? -I don't like the way it is now. The gold doesn't say what Karat Wt it is, just white, yellow or? Also, no carat weight for the stone, just Emerald, etc; Hardly any categories have Item Specifics since the changes took affect, and like Dancing said, what is the use of saying simulated or even imitation if you still allow the word Diamond, it is going to come up in a Diamond search.

Exactly what did all of this hullabaloo accomplish?? You all need to go back to the drawing board, and take a look at the changes. If they aren't helpful, scrap the whole lot, and start over. I know that wont happen except in my dreams, but I it doesn't take rocket science to understand some of these issues. Change for the sake of change is NOT GOOD. All this did was give Ebay an out. Now, if they get complaints from any agencies or buyers, they can say "Oh, but we have a policy against yada, yada". And, that will be true, but not much of anything else was accomplished, except to make it very confusing for buyers and sellers alike.

As the poster above just said, there are still a gazillion misleading ads and titles with Gold for GP, etc; and as the newness wears off, more and more of these listings will pop up, and we will be right back to square one. Having the membership do the reporting will not do the job. More is needed from Ebay. Are you listening????

Re: Questions About Jewelry Policy - Please Ask Here

Hi -

I have to express that I am very frustrated with the 'new rules'. However, I am trying very hard to comply and have spent hours upon hours changing my listings - just to have them cancelled again! I know that you are doing this for the best of the community, but I hope that you understand that we are ALL trying very hard to comply and, with my loss in sales through cancelled listings AND the new upgrade in fees I have to pay - it is costing me DEARLY right now.

I am very concerned about getting suspended as I am trying to comply. What would cause you to suspend someone? How can I make sure I don't get suspended? Please understand that e-bay is a major source for my household income and I cannot risk it. I am dedicating a big portion of my time now to 'fixing' my listings to comply, but am afraid I'll get suspended when I am doing my best.

How can I safe guard myself against that and what causes you to suspend people? All my customers thus far are very happy with the product and I certainly do not mislead them with my listings. I believe I am a good seller.

Please advise on what I should watch for while I am working on compliance.

Thank you.

50% of listings for Mikimoto are not Mikimoto, but use the terms "Mikimoto quality" or "Mikimoto style". Are these keyword spamming? I have reported many listings in the past and nothing was removed. Is this not considered keyword spamming by ebay? If this is not keyword spamming, what is considered keyword spamming by ebay. Thank you.

Re: Questions About Jewelry Policy - Please Ask Here

I just purchased 3 bracelets variously described as "genuine" pink sapphire and also "genuine natural stone" blue sapphire. The "diamonds" were described as cz in very small print only later in the description; well, at least they told me. When I received the bracelets, I was very disappointed in the quality of the stones, thinking that it wouldn't be legal for anyone to advertise a "natural" stone if it wasn't. From the looks of these things, the only thing "genuine" was the COLOR PINK and I haven't a clue as to what could possibly be natural about the blue things masquerading as sapphires. This just isn't right. Are these people in violation of the existing policy? If they are not, eBay really needs to put a stop to this kind of deception.

I so agree with Shinju Ga Suki. I love vintage items and I'm tired of sifting through the "new Vintage items to find the real thing. Very often I have to click on an item and read the listing before the seller reveals that the item being sold is actually not vintage but new and made to look like a vintage item. I think something really needs to be done about this.

As far as the CZ thing. I don't care what anyone says CZ are CZ and diamonds are diamonds and I'm glad that people will have to specify. It's not fair selling to people when you could be missleading them.... period.

I once bought somethng that the seller sold as sterling silver and it turned out to be silver plated. Whewn I found out she agreed to exchange it for me but gave me a nutral....so not fair.

Re: Questions About Jewelry Policy - Please Ask Here

In January, I really started to get into selling here on Ebay. I have a lot of personal jewelry that I wished to sell. I bought some turquoise jewelry at Native American Pow-Wows but today, I was terrified to list it as Native American so I put "style" after it. I have no proof as to where I bought these things. I have a pair of silver earrings that have a name on the back with a copyright icon but I was afraid to put that under "artisan" jewelry. It's signed, but how do I know if it's real? I think this new rule is a very good rule, but for us average sellers that really have no knowledge of authenticity, it's going to make sales tough. I'm paying fees for things people probably won't be able to find. We need more specific listing options.

I think it's a great idea to keep separate threads on Q&A and thanks for a pretty smooth transition to a new message board!!!

Sellers with hundreds or thousands of intentionally misrepresented items are flooding entire categories in a way that makes buying very difficult. Some categories are being hit with "bombing runs" with several hundred repetitive 3 day listings, it makes searches real tough and by the time eBay can become aware of it and take action the listings run out and are reposted.

The problem doesn't seem to be
"...individuals that come to the site and list products from the attics, from their grandparents’ estates, etc. and they honestly do not know the quality or origins of the items they are selling."

Some sellers are exploiting weaknesses in policy enforcement and buyers are having a hard time wading thru search results, is there an ongoing process to fight this? Is there anything average members like me can do to help?

Greetings All!

Hi cricketl38 :)

When listing any item on ebaY, you should always follow what ebaY says, "If you don't know, don't list."

Native American Arts are covered by a number of laws regulating their sale in the US.

Be sure to read these links...

Link

To find markings...

Link

And for more info...

*****************************************************

Hi mtshopper1, you have been defrauded. :_|

The most effective way to act on this problem is to make an online complaint to the Attorney General of your state, and the state of the seller. Since ebaY does not have any way of examining the items for sale on the site, they do little to intervene.
