Ironhead VIN Question
Apr 18, 2011 05:28 AM
I've been working on, and taking apart ironheads for awhile, but not as long as some of you out there, and I've run across my first.
Its a 1970 XLCH and the VIN on the motor is Stamped under the Tappet Guides on the front Cylinder, instead of between the Cylinders.
Its a 900 that was Mag fired at one time, and someone has replaced the Mag with Distributor points, and has the later 70's primary cover.
Did Harley stamp the VIN like this on some of the 70's, untill the cam cover, and points change? And, would this motor be of more value rebuilding, and keeping as a whole, or parting it out?
Any help on this part of Harley history would be appreciated.

Checked it out. Good site, I'll have to sign up. The picture is were the VIN shows from 70 on up to 80. But the VIN on this 70 is Stamped on a Boss Area just below the two Tappets for the front cylinder. Image and video hosting by TinyPic Image and video hosting by TinyPic Image and video hosting by TinyPic the first two pictures are 70 distributor fired Ironheads note there is no boss area under the front tappets, but on the third a 68 distributor fired there is an area. and this is were the VIN on the 70 is at, and there is no boss area on the left side, were the VIN was on the pre 70's. Since I have never ran across this before, I didn't know if I might have stumpled across a rare find like a "79 exception", a HOT Motor, or if is the way Harley did it on the Early 70 model.

Thanks for the help. I've had 4 1970 model ironheads over the years. One was my personnel bike, and the other 3 were basket cases I picked up for parts, and all of them had the VIN between the cylinders, this is why I was kind of curious about the VIN location.
Again, thanks for the info.

Yes that is where the number plate was moved in 70.(or was it 69?) ..as for Mag, or points, The mag is worth more off the motor than on , and points run just as good , but require a good batterie!

The mag was dropped in 70..

1970:

XLH got the headlamp eyebrow of the XLCH
Optional boat tail (again in 71)
Magneto ignition on the XLCH replaced with XLH’s points/coil.
First year for XR-750
Production Information:
XLH (3,033)
XLCH (5,527)
