Ultima 65mm Inverted Fork Problems
Jun 21, 2008 02:00 PM
Just wanted to issue a warning to ebayers intending to purchase or sell Ultima's new 65mm inverted front ends. As a retailer of this product, I think it is very important that everyone is aware of a potentially dangerous situation. I recently sold and installed a set of these forks. Upon installation, I noticed a MAJOR design flaw in the axle and axle retaining portion of the forks. The design will allow the axle to slide from side to side if any heavy side loads are applied, i.e. high speed cornering. I noticed this problem and brought it to the attention of the manufacturer. I was told an "engineer" would be in contact with me to discuss the problem. No return call. I contacted them a second time and got the same answer. Still, no return call.
I thought I found a way to prevent the problem and naively installed the forks anyway. About 75 miles after the bike left, the wheel walked to the left and locked up the wheel and caused a crash. I am now in a huge mess over this, and while I am taking full responsibility over what happened, I am very angry that the manufacturer has yet to contact me about the problem.
The short of this is, until Ultima fixes the problem, be aware of the potential dangers here. As a retailer, you could be named in a lawsuit. As a consumer, you could end up with serious injuries or even death.
Sorry to be a downer, but I just want to see everyone safe. Keep the rubber side down.

I too had theses forks on my Harley while riding to work one morning the right hand slider un-screwed its self from the base lucky for me I had just come to a stop for lights, had to rebuild them and lock-tight the thread. Still an Awesome looking fork

Hello again. Does anyone have a set of assembly instructions and specs that may have come with one of these front end? Mine's 8 over. I can get it apart but would like to have detailed instructions and specs for what kind and how much fork oil, preload settings, etc. Ultima, Midwest and Jireh are useless in this area. Someone must have the sheets from when these were first out. Please!!!

Anyone here care to help me out with the layout of this front end? I need a couple of more inches length on the 8 over I got and don't really want to buy either the longer sets or all the components listed in the parts list as specific to length Anyone have this apart before? Not sure just getting the 10 or 12 over inner tubes will net that in consideration of the other specific lenght components. Hard to know how they play together.

The public is often the guinea pig for many wheeled vehicles and parts that go on them so design flaws are not that rare a thing.

Something I'm curious about though. You said that Ultima stepped up and took care of the damages, etc.

Is that known for a fact and if so, did Ultima get a signed waiver absolving both them and you of any responsibility?
Many people get to thinking about things over months or years and then decide to lawyer up and go for the throat.

Interesting read as I'm currently mocking up this very front end in an 8 over. I have noticed what you speak about and though the design was odd. Not only that but you really need to crank down to get the pinch bolts to actually hold. I didn't like the way this worked at all and will find a way to secure the right side so there's a cap so to speak on both ends not just the left. The axle can be installed through either end, right?

wow thats heavy news . I have purchased 4 sets of 65mm ultima forks in last 3 years , 2 standard length and 2x12" overs , i use them on trikes , and make up my own front axles/spindles . In a trike the loads are greatly incrreased across the beam , and i havnt ever had a problem .

i snapped a rear wheel off 3 years ago , an hit a wall head on @ 50+mph , my forks didnt bend , an the chrome wasnt even flaked over the scratches . i can see what people are saying regards the design , but i make my own axles up , so never crossed that bridge of loose axles .

thanks very much for the alert , the forks themselves are very strong indeed , the axle is a simple problem to resolve , i dont know why Ultima didnt just do the same as i do , and modify the axle .

Regards Zac .. UK.

I was wondering why the Ultima 65mm inverted frontend forks were discontinued. I don't think it was a safety issue. They were replaced by the current 58mm inverted forks. I would like to find the 65mm with +6 over to buy. They are getting to be hard to find, I also wonder about getting parts now, such as the seals for them.

Hi all, you must mean wheel walked to right, impossible for wheel to walk left as the rh side of axle bottoms out on fork lower. Are these units prefilled with oil? No idea how to take apart if needed. I red locktited everything and retorqued a few times.

Ok, for the record, Ultima stepped up and took care of this issue. The damages incurred by my customer were taken care of by Ultima and they have made good on all their promises. I love the people at Ultima and highly recommend them...but I still stand behind my original statement that the fork design has a inherent flaw...or at least did. I do not know if the problem has been fixed or not, but as long as they stand behind the product, then all should be well.
