"You big dummy!"

I mean, correct hotrats! (I was still in Fred G. Sanford mode :-D ) The Sanford-Townsend Band it is. I thought that second clue would give it away, but I couldn't resist the mental image. Below they perform their hit "Smoke From A Distant Fire" flawlessly on the Midnight Special tv show:

hotrats has our next puzzler, take it away!

ok, lets go from 1 hit wonders to 0 hit wonders

American born singer, songwriter, artist and poet did not find major billboard success but sure had the "magic" when it came to music

I presume it's someone we would know?

If he or she didn't have billboard success, would we know him or her from something else?

Is it someone who posts on this board? :-D

(I know it's not me, because you said it's an American.) :^O

you would know him, although he was not a chart topper his work was critically acclaimed.  Known mostly for his vocals - and harmonica much of his earlier success came from the help of a "mother"

Clue #1

I don't mean to sound apocalypic, but this band's records could be the last ones in your music collection.

What a great Beefheart track (which can be found on the Revenant box set).  My good friend Scott Colburn put together and cleaned up the tracks for that collection.  He said they had enough for a 12-cd box set, but decided to whittle the material down to 5 discs to keep the price reasonable.  There is much more material out there to be released someday by someone.....

I'm not surprised that there is much more material in the vaults.  Especially if we're talking about Zappa's vaults.  Do you think anyone will ever go through the 2 climate controlled vaults under his estate (one for studio tapes, one for live) and make a dent in preparing what's in there for release?

Back to the game... Polestar got it in one clue.  ZZ Top is the answer.  The next clue was going to be: one member has something in his name, the others have it on their heads (answer: Beard).

In the 1980s a friend at work told me that someone he had known years ago claimed "Cheap Sunglasses" was his favourite song.  So my friend now and then would buy a pair of cheap sunglasses, stick it in an enevelope, and mail it to him anonymously.  With that story in mind, here is... Cheap Sunglasses.

Polestar, put on your sunglasses and blind us with a brilliant new puzzle!

Fortunately cheap sunglasses are the only kind I've ever had - I end up losing them or breaking them eventually anyway. Oh yeah!

CLUE#1:

This Tulsa band, a duo of sorts, never got as famous as some of its label mates, but they should have. Can you name the band?

Lone Justice?

Not Lone Justice though I see why you made that guess; and yet the band in question had an affiliation with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers as well, but closer.

CLUE#4:

Clue#2 referred to the record label, which this band shared with TP&THBs, Leon Russell, J.J. Cale..

Gotta give that one to you, hotrats, I was looking for the Dwight Twilley Band, but you were right there anyway since you gave their previous band name of 'Oister', which were Dwight Twilley and the late great Phil Seymour. There was a nice musical relationship between their early work and Tom Petty's, one of my favorites is Phil's background vocals on TP&THBs song "Magnolia" [not to be confused with label-mate J.J. Cale's song of the same name], and it was Dwight who suggested that they use the familiar guitar lick on "Breakdown" throughout the song, as originally it only appeared at the end.

But let's have a DTB classic below!:

Well have to admit I somewhat kindof cheated a bit on this one..knew Shelter records being a long time Leon Russell fan so I did the Google thing and dug around... and what fun I had finding the answer.  Learned a bunch of new stuff... Thanks polestar

Oh Boy... my turn eh.  Ok this American born country/folk singer is admired by many big names including Dylan, Roger Waters, Johnny Cash.  Look for the first clue in this paragraph

Buddy Holly

(probably not, but I think you're trying to be tricky, so maybe)

Clue #2
Late 60s he was very active in the Chicago folk scene along with a good man before being discovered by a highway man. If you are seeing through my trickery it may bring a smile to your face , an illegal one perhaps

clue 3.

1998 had him battling cancer on his neck.. changed his voice some but he is still going strong.. earning lifetime achievment awards, inducted into the Nashville hall of fame for songwriters.

Many of his songs have been covered including some of his best known.... Angel from Montgomery , Sam Stone, Hello in There.

Sam Phillips produced two songs in 1979 - who rarely did any studio work by this time.
