pantherboy has it with The Faces! beccabear: Yeah, we forget sometimes that these disc. boards are kind of like an auction listing - not all eyes are on it at all times.

It occurred to me that The Small Faces and Humble Pie had been done here before, but we had never covered this particular 'branch' of the Pete-Frame-family-tree. Steve Marriott left the Small Faces to form Humble Pie with Frampton, and when Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood came into the fold, they were too tall (by previous group standards at any rate) to be called Small Faces, hence simply The Faces.

The song below was actually on one of Rod's solo albums, but like a few others it was actually The Faces. Here they are performing The Temptations' "(I Know) I'm Losing You". They were cookin' at the Beeb that day:

Have at the next one pantherboy..

Guitar pickin', truck drivin', cajun song writin' all around American. Famous for all 3, by the way.

One if his hits refers to the father of modern industry (or one of the fathers, anyway).

Nice work, Mr Dave!

Indeed, the man was known for driving truck in Smokey and the Bandit was also quite the git-picker!

Here he is being a legend:

Okay, quiz time again...

How about a Scottish singer who covered one of Jerry Reed's songs on a 1976 LP?

(Slightly confusingly, there was a Nashville-based songwriter and performer by the same name active around the same time frame.)

That would be one of my all-time favorites, The Sensational Alex Harvey!   I can't wait to see the clip you post.............:8}

Impossible to encapsulate the Sensational Alex Harvey Band in a few youtube clips, but the Faith Healer has been my very favorite since it turned up as the leadoff rocker on that 1975 live album.

And here they are covering Jerry Reed's "Amos Moses".

That Nashville Alex Harvey, by the way, wrote Cymarron's hit song "Rings", covered here by Leo Kottke.

Next!

Ah, Mr Dave, that band was life-changing for me when I discovered them in my teens at our local library.  I rented "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" purely on the merits of the cover art.  My 'desert island' album is, and always will be, 'Rock Drill'.

Ok - how about focusing on the ladies for a change?

You could be fooled by this pint-size gal's heavy makeup to brush her off, but she's really man-sized on the inside.  Plays a mean guitar, too.

Her photographs with John Peel on one of her albums are very touching.

Think more Lollapalooza circuit - but she could cover a Willie Dixon song, in high heels, and play slide guitar.

The only thing that comes to mind from that clue, is the various artists Dandelion Records sampler album, "There is Some Fun Going Forward".  (I suspect that's an anagram, but never took time to figure it out.  I'm no good at anagrams, anyway.)  The cover picture is of John Peel and his wife (girlfriend at the time), naked in a bathtub.  I don't know her name, but I don't think she was a recording artist.  I've posted a picture of that cover on this board in the past, but it got pulled down, so I don't think I should do it again.

That would be Sheila Ravenscroft, John Peel's real last name was Ravenscroft, mad to have changed it I think.

No guesses here, the guitar clue makes me figure I have a blind spot for this.

Ok - this artist is not too obscure, but I seem to have y'all scratching your heads.

PJ Harvey worked closely with John Peel and has some touching words and photos on her Peel Sessions release.

Here she is covering Wang Dang Doodle (I was wrong about the slide):

Here is one of my favorite clips of her.

PJ has many nuances to her career and is not a one-trick pony.

Becca - care to take the next one??

This one shouldn't be too hard.

Clue 1

This singer has been acclaimed "king" of his genre.

(2,011 of 2,444)
Re: Name that band - a game
Jul 31, 2012 05:52 PM

The obvious choice is the king of rock 'n' roll, Elvis.

But you knew that would be most peoples' guess, so you would not have chosen him as your answer.

But you also knew that since most people would think it was Elvis, they would not guess Elvis, so you would choose Elvis as your answer.

However, you knew some would figure that out, and so to throw them off, you would not in fact choose Elvis after all.

And yet, you had to know that a few here, used to occasional trickery, red herrings, and such-like here on the Name that band thread would count on just this kind of ploy on your part, and knowing that, you would of course choose Elvis as your answer.

Fool! Those here who have played this game since its beginning know that, after all the puzzlers posted, no one has yet done such an obvious icon as Elvis, and no one, not even you, would do so now, so you would not in fact choose Elvis as the answer.

Ha ha ha! The trail of logic is complete! After you thought you fooled us all, how could you resist the ultimate last laugh when wrong guess after wrong guess of various 'kings' of one genre or another were brushed aside as faulty answers?! You have chosen Elvis as the answer, but I won't be one of the fooled - I choose as my answer....ELVIS!

Sorry, it's not Elvis.

But then, it could have been Elvis, and I may have changed my mind.  BWWA-HA-HA-HA!!!

It also isn't MJ.  (At least, it isn't now.  BWWA-HA-HA-HA!)

I was considering giving 2 clues at once, because I knew the first clue was too vague.  But then, in this game, the first clue is supposed to be vague, isn't it?

Clue 2

One of his biggest hits, is also associated with a group of singers who are related to each other.

It's not B.B. King.  But you're in the right decade.

Clue 3

He was often marketed as a jazz musician.  But he wasn't called the king of jazz.
