Name that band - a game

Ok - I thought of this in the shower (where I do all my best thinking, for some reason......) RULES: - I will list clues about a band. - You try to guess the band - If you need more clues, I will post a maximum of 3 - The winner gets a nifty video of said band to watch and admire (posted by me) - The winner has the option to give out clues for the next band, or I will by default

Mmmmmmm, now you've slipped back a decade. Get back into the 50s.
Clue 4
Despite being marketed as a jazz musician, his genre is quite different from jazz. Maybe it's a little closer to folk music, at least as far as repertoire goes. But he wasn't the king of folk.

No. "King" is not part of his name, in case I somehow gave that impression. I'm running out of clues!

Other side of the pond!

Ah, then it's probably not the King Of Calypso, Harry Belafonte, then since he's more or less from "this" side of the pond...
And Joe "King" Carrasco likewise... Guess I need to reread the clues a bit more. ...

The King of Skiffle is indeed who I was going for.
The clue, "one of his biggest hits is also associated with a group of singers who are related to each other", referred to the Smothers Brothers doing "My Old Man's a Dustman".
Here's an energetic performance of Cumberland Gap, with the band getting a few solos in for good measure.
Bonus! The Smothers Brothers performing My Old Man, one of their funniest performances.
Mr. Dave, what do you have for us now?

What do you think about that?
I've been reading a nice picture book about Laurel Canyon, but I don't know if it's common knowledge who bought Wally Cox's house, so instead we'll go another direction.
CLUE #1: This 70's band was named for its founder & leader, who died in a plane crash en route to play a county fair. ...

Oops, yeah, sorry for the delay, much distracted lately...
CLUE#2: The band's biggest hit was from their eponymous debut. It hit the charts shortly before a song with a very similar title by a British band became their biggest US hit. This latter tune was then retitled "Alternate 3 word phrase from chorus ("original 3 word phrase from chorus)" for the US market... ...

Well what do you know... I've never heard of the band you're asking about, but from your clue, I guessed the song and looked it up, found it must be the one.
The song (as titled in North America) is: Bang a Gong (Get It On) by T. Rex. and the other Get It On is by Chase.
Especially ironic, since the leaders of both groups died in vehicular accidents a few years apart.

Very good, Allen. Yes, Bill Chase died in August 1974, and Marc Bolan's car crash was in September 1977.
"Get It On" spent 13 weeks in the charts starting in May 1971, and "Bang A Gong (Get It On)" made the US Top 20 by March 1972.
Here's Seals and Crofts introducing Marc and T.Rex on the Midnight Special. ...

Though I didn't remember Chase, I do know the other "Get It On". Sounds like a Blood, Sweat and Tears song.
The preceding quiz reminds me of something similar, so let's go with that. This new quiz involves 3 records:
1. A UK singer records a song. It's a hit in the UK, but not in the USA. Although I recall it did quite well in Canada.
2. At almost the same time, an American group records another song with the same title, and adds a subtitle in brackets so it won't be confused with the record above. This one becomes a hit.
And then there's a third record, which I'll save for clue #2, because it might be a give-away. See if you can get it from the clues so far. The question: who recorded record 1?

Not just a UK singer, but an "English" singer, in fact, huh?
"Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" was one of the first parenthetically bracketed song titles that came to mind. I'd never heard of the song "Brandy" by Scott English, but now that I have, I'll be combing the bins at Goodwill for a copy. Not!
I'll let you fill in the rest of the story while I eradicate this earworm...

Well in that case I won't post a link, and I won't post the rest of the story. It could have been worse. I could have linked to you-know-who's version.
Mr. Dave now has the floor to post a new riddle that will lead us to music with taste.

I know you're not going to agree, but the original version of that song isn't that bad. Scott English sounds a little (or maybe even a lot) like Joe Cocker, and he also wrote "Bend Me, Shape Me". But it's hard to get into the song if you're already familiar with Barry Manilow's "Mandy", which is the rest of the story. It's his cover version of "Brandy", retitled to avoid confusion with the other "Brandy". It's kind of like how it's hard to enjoy the Cat Stevens song, "The First Cut is the Deepest" if you've heard certain cheesy cover versions first.
When reviewing the song for a link, I discovered there are 2 mixes of Scott English's "Brandy". Don't throw something at me, but I do have the record, though now that I'm comparing versions I'm sure the other mix is the one that I heard on radio back when it came out, and I think it's a stronger mix, so I was going to link to that one. Mr. Dave is excused from clicking.

CLUE#2 - A couple of this band's early LP's were on a sorta bubblegum associated label, though their music was definitely a rough kind of rock and roll. After the hiatus and renaissance, the next several LP's were on a new wave & punk associated label (though it started as a blues label and released some prog as well). Still in the rock field, they now had a janglier british invasion inspired sound. ...

YES, INDEED. Over to you, Polestar! While you're thinking, here's some cool tunes:
A later period Groovies tune the equal of the better known "Shake Some Action".
A rare TV appearance in the wilderness years, after Roy Loney left, but before the Jordan-Wilson combo got a contract... ("Slow Death", later covered by the Dictators.)
And, a Randy Newman cover from the Roy Loney years. ...

One of the songs on Fight Or Flight, the 1981 album by The Mods [the Japanese band] borrowed that catchy "Shake Some Action" riff - heavily borrowed!
CLUE#1:
This band was part of the mid 90s "brit-pop" wave, but never made any waves in the U.S. as did some others, however they did outlast many of those bands and only recently broke up.
