Thanks, but my knowledge is limited to a few areas. I really think there are too many genre sub-divisions. These days, any time a new band comes out, someone has to make up a new genre for them. People who do care about genres will frown sternly upon any suggestion that early Beatles, 60s garage, and anything else pre circa 1975* could be labelled punk.

When I mentioned "post punk" bands existing as early as 1976, I was thinking of The Fall. (I should make my comments more explicit, less cryptic.) Though they didn't release anything until 1978, and their 1st album came out in 1979.

Great topic - I also consider Wire and Killing Joke 'post punk' (not to mention my two favorite bands) and they were there in the heyday of punk.

The Hamburg era (Savage Young) Beatles were not punk. Was Marlon Brando in The Wild One "punk"? I blame the writers and the critics for all this nonsense.

I have an 8 album set of 78 records AD56. Polka Tex Williams and his WESTERN CARAVAN. Is it worth anything?

Williams is a minor country artist; I don't see his records selling for a lot. He recorded for Decca and Capitol in the 1950s (78 rpm era), be sure to state the label when selling as catalogue number doesn't help. 8 records (16 sides) is a larger than usual album. Perhaps that will be a selling advantage.

78 record of speeches delivered at dinner 50th Anniversary The Rockefeller Foundation by John D. Rockefeller, 3rd; Dean Rusk; J. George Harrar on April 2, 1963. Comes with photos of event and guest list from all over the world. What should I list it for on Ebay? Auction or Buy It Now? Know it's not music, but any input appreciated.

78 rpm in 1963? That's odd. Post a picture?

I'd list it at $9.99 and see what happens. There is a narrow market for that stuff, as rare as it is.

I have several copies of the 1972 Buddah Record's Release "The Amazing Spiderman A Rockomic! These have never been opened and have inside a color poster by John Romita. I have no idea what this vinyl is worth (if anything). I tried selling once on ebay and had no interest. With Spiderman being popular once again I wonder if there would be increased interest. I got these records when I was 10 years old back in 1972 and found them at my parents house recently.

I didn't realize Buddah Records put out a Spiderman album. Popsike shows just 1 sale of it, in 2005 for $40, with 23 bids. Sounds promising.
When I was about 10, I had a Batman album, but don't think I would recognize it if I saw it. There were dozens of them when Batman was a TV show with Adam West, and the album I had wasn't humorous like the show. In fact I thought it was rather dull. I doubt it was the Jan and Dean version, which is the most sought after.

Update: I should have checked... there are about 2 dozen copies of it on ebay currently, so it's not a rarity. Having a sealed copy is nice though, so I still think it's worth listing.

Ok, so I purchased several alums this past weekend at an estate sale, and after not finding the first three anywhere on popsike.com I decided maybe I needed to just come ask the experts. So, if you don't mind? Marty Robbins: Gunfighter Ballads, Columbia Lily Tomlin: And Thats the Truth, Polydor 1972 Dolly Parton: Here You Come Again, RCA 1977 Herman's Hermits: On Tour, MGM Tex Ritter, An American Legend, Capitol Kris Kristofferson, Jesus Was A Capricorn, Monument And others but I'm not sure how many we can ask about? Thanks for any help!

All nominal value I'm afraid. Not an encouraging mix, any unusual names or labels among them?

Well, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know any unusual labels? I didn't get any of the albums of artists that I didn't recognize the names of...maybe next time I should...if that would be considered "unusual"?

Hi Niceman - Allen is right, you have some common but not lousy records there. In other words, if you are looking to resell they weren't great choices, but if you wanted to listen to some music, you have some good choices. That Herman's Hermits album was one of the first I owned as a lad.
What Allen was referring to in his post about 'unusual' records would be, perhaps, imported pressings from another country, dj copies, or colored vinyl.
As far as hitting a goldmine with stuff you don't know, it can happen but not often. The lure of the chase and the love of music is what keeps a lot of us here. Education can take years for this stuff, but what else am I gonna do? Take up golf?

Records are like golf. It's best to have a hole in one.

I recently bought at an estate sale an LP entitled "The Original American Folk Blues Festival (which was a recording of a live performance in Hamburg Germany), which is an American release on Decca Records. This is issued on the old style Decca Label circa 1950s and early 60s on which stock issues were mosly black in color with Decca written in semi circle accross the top. Only this is released on pink label which I understand to have been a promo label even though it does not say promo anywhere on label. The liner notes indicated the recording was made in October 1962
The record features performances in various combinations of blues artists (Memphis Slim, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, TBone Walker, John Lee Hooker, Shaky Jake and Willie Dixon.
I am researching this among several pieces I plan to place at auction. I googled ths title and did find for sale on DISCOGS for $12 a reissue with totally different cover for sale on CD and Vinyl. It is same as song titles are same.
I myself had never seen nor heard of this LP. I saw no similar original stock or promo copies on Popsike nor when I did a search for copies sold on EBAY. I found no listing of this LP in Goldmine either
Has anyone ever had this; seen this or have any idea what it might be worth

Value of records without covers
Aug 3, 2012 03:40 AM
|
Hi,
I've read that records without album covers are worth very little, if anything. Are there any exceptions?
I have some old Spanish Language records (33s) without album covers. Any chance they could be rare or valuable to someone?
I notice hardly anyone lists records for sale without the cover image -- should I even bother listing with just an image of the discs themselves?
Thanks!
Carol

Frankly, I don't think languague instruction LPs have any value, with or without a cover. People who want to learn languages, probably don't own turntables. And people with turntables want to hear music. There's not much nostalgia value in them. Also, teaching methods, and words and phrases used, may be outdated. Finally, nost language instruction records came with a read-along book. The book is more important than the cover. Either way, I recommend donating it to Goodwill, if your local store isn't already overstocked with them.

Hi allen4444,
Oops, I meant they were music records in the Spanish language (Latino music?). I should have been more clear on that. Sorry. I really appreciate your thoughtful respoonse though.
So, if anyone knows if/where there's a market for old Spanish-language music records without covers, please let me know.
Thanks!
Carol

Ohhhh, my bad!
It's hard to answer because you've given no indication what style of music it is, or when it dates from. Also, Spanish is spoken in many countries, in Spain of course, but also in Central and South America, so the language doesn't tell me where it comes from. Since you didn't provide details, maybe you don't know either. I think this question is outside the scope of the "board regulars", and you would have to ask someone who knows Spanish culture, and could tell you if the artists are famous people, or if their records are collected.
I think the best approach is to just list them as a lot, and describe titles and artists as best you can. That is, if they are in great condition. If not, you should probably toss them. To answer your original question, albums without covers do sell on ebay, but usually not for much. Still, if you just want to get rid of them, and find someone who would appreciate them, it may be worth listing at a low asking price.
