This piece appears to have been done on a linen fabric that looks like crosstitch fabric. The edges are embroidered in a wool thread. And then the beads appear to be turquoise and black glass beads with two shades of metallic-type beads.
Measurements are 12" x 12". I know that glass beaded purses were common, but this looks like the size of a pillow cover to me.
I am wondering what the embroidery style would be called, how old this would be, what it was intended for, and what the metallic beads are... When I zoom in on my photos of the metallic beads, they are rough-hewn in appearance, which has me puzzled.
My eyes aren't great, but looks like it may have been worked on penelope needlepoint canvas in persian yarn ( from what I can tell from the frays on the back of the piece). Looks as if they slipped a bead onto the needle while working what looks like a tent (continental?) stitch . The border area (white & maybe black) looks as if it's crosstitch. The dimensions are right for a pillow cover or maybe a chessboard.
Thank you for the wonderful information! I just finished reading about penelope needlepoint canvas, persian wool, and continental stitches -I'm always learning...
I would appreciate any input as to where best to list this.
