Re: What on earth is barkcloth?

Well I'll give it a go.

I've seen fabric that is called "Birch Bark" - it is either rayon or a rayon blend - it has a natural color with black flecks - it's meant to resemble a birch tree's bark. The fact is - it's not REALLY barkcloth - not if you go by a very strict interpretation to define barkcloth.

Without a close up photo of your fabric - front and back, I can't tell you for sure what you've got.

As for barkcloth faille - it's two entirely separate things so it's something that someone invented...probably a seller who had a faille and wanted to try and sell it as a barkcloth.

Barkcloth is and always will be a momie weave. Faille is a ribbed weave - looks like grosgrain ribbon.

Pins - thank you so much for your detailed explanation, the beautiful photos of the barkcloth. I just tuned in to the discussion boards and am thrilled. For yrs, no one has been able to explain what barkcloth is, or at least one that I could catch on to and so much fabric out there is labeled barkcloth but is not which really confused me. Thanks so much!!!! Di in Calif

I have this item , I was given to sell by a client.
I was told it's bark cloth. It is rough and very textures.
unfortunely, the owner did not store it properly and it refuses to lie flat.
I'm afraid to do anything to it, that might lessen it 's value.

Thanks for any help in confirming that this is Barkcloth.

What on earth is barkcloth?

That is tapa - REAL barkcloth - not the barkcloth fabric that we are all looking for, but the 'real deal' - usually made by South Pacific native peoples by pounding strips of bark.

I would market that as a primitive art tapa wall hanging...

Great thread. I am fascinated with barkcloth but have found such great variations in cost!? Would love to find resources for the original tapa. Is it not African also, in addition to South Pacific? Melanie

Is this barkcloth? Nobody seems to know what it is.

Link

They are either from Hawaii Or Japan from the early 1940s. They were sent home to my husband's grandma from her soldier husband during WWII. The material is very coarse and kinda feels like raffia or straw. Any ideas?

NO.

Likely linen or cotton - looks like a loose plain weave plaid.

Could linen or cotton be quite stiff and coarse? They don't feel like fabric, more like raffia or something. That's why I'm so stumped! :)

3,000 yards!? What's your address? :^O

Sounds like heaven, to me! I would love to see a few pictures, of-course.

With that much yardage, I would think you could do an auction with a fixed price per yard, allowing buyers to chose how many yards they wish to purchase. Hold on for the more experienced fabric sellers to advise you!
