Make sure the password for your email program is very secure. Use a combination of numbers and letters and change it periodically. The same applies for the password hint question. It's also important to use different passwords for the various online accounts you use (Paypal, online banking, etc).
In the instance that you have responded to a SPOOF email with your personal information
Please change your eBay password and password hint. In addition, you may want to do the following for your protection of your personal information and identity:
A) cancel your credit cards immediately
B) file a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where it was stolen, because this proves to credit providers you were diligent, and is a first step toward an investigation (if there is one).
AND NOW MOST IMPORTANTLY:
C) Call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and SS#.
The numbers are:
Equifax: 1-800-525-6285

I get a mail from a fake Pay Pal sender about once every month and a half. I also occasionally get from my credit card company (fake). I NEVER click on the link that is given on the page. I type the addy in myself. If these losers would expend as much energy, doing honest enterprises, they would probably do well.

Hmmm not really sure just learning about forums and such but I have purchased things from ebay off and on over the years then I got an email, this person said that they had paid me and that I was not responding to them, then went on to say that they were going to report me and they were sorry for it but if I did not send them a tracking number they had no choice, the last of the note said "waiting for your answer asap" I have never sold anything on ebay and have no clue what is going on, I asked my husband and he (like me) doesn't even know the process of how to sell stuff on ebay. Sorry I am old and it is easier to have a garage sale than to figure and ship whatever I would want to get rid of. So what do I do? I tried to respond to this person to tell them they had contacted the wrong person but the link no longer works, according to the email this person has been on ebay since may 25, of 05. Has anyone heard of this person the name is " bluebellvue" I am lost any advice would be helpful thank you

Can eBay's "Legal Department "call in an "Air Strike" on a "Spoofer" address? Is the eBay/BMW Promotion a spoof? BMW's London Legal Division should be on "Red Alert"! I'm disapointed in blantent/professed criminalism to eBays & BMW's image.

I got a question on one of my auctions today and it was set-up as follows. Offering a outrageous amount of money for my item, if I cancelled it early. Offering their own shipping company. All the bells and whistles, was very convincing, especially if it was someone who wasnt very tech savvy. It was asking me to ship to Africa abd etc....A little note that tipped me off right away was one of the icons was poorly copied, I noticed that before I even read the message. I deleted my email, deleted the mail I recieved in MY-EBAY, and deleted the question from the auction page. I didn't read this page until after, but wanted to update people that are worried about scams. DO NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS about your auction if they look suspicious. Its better to be safe than sorry. Anyways, the name used was something along the lines of... Quinn @ something or another. I wanted to post this because I read alot of people saying they dont respond unless it shows up in their my-ebay messages folder. Well if they ask a question about your auction, it will show up there, and in your main email. Be careful folks.

I am very new to e-commerce and relatively new to e-bay. I recently jumped into internet website stores and opened an e-bay store. Sales are slow, but my sites are all new and I know you have to build up your reputation. I just had my first e-bay consultation with an e-bay representative whose name is Sherry and I am excited to have this opportunity for some one-on-one help. It is easy with today's economy to get discouraged about sales; however, I do believe that the economy will actually help boost internet sales because it will ultimately save on gas. I urge anyone that has not had a chance to check if this service will help you to sign up. I am not related in any way with e-bay other than my store, but was so encouraged after my first session that I wanted to share it. Sharon A. Drury

I cannot get onto my eBay account and I've tried everything. I've contacted by email: eBay techs live email, Norton Symantec techs live email and they have not helped at all. They send me emails saying that the problem is resolved but it is not. I try to sign into "My eBay" and the "My Summary" page comes up and this is what is on it: "Identity Assurence-Put your credit card on file." The url is: file:///C:/WINDOWS/System32/dllcache/smdata32/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/empr esa03/index.html Notice that "Assurance" is mispelled. And the techs say that I have not given them enough info to do anything with. I've also reported this site to Microsoft and still nothing has been done to help.I do not get notices of autions that I have been "Watching"....like alerts that an auction is ending. Like I said before I cannot get onto my eBay account at all even though I sometimes can go to the auctions and sign in and click "Watch this Item". But I cannot go to my "Watching" when I click on the "Watching" the "Summary" page automatically comes up everytime with the "Assurence-Put Your Credit card on file." site. I am so weary of trying to get this resolved. I don't know what to do next. I was assured that the site is a real Phishing site by all the live techs. The info the Phishing site wants is very personal info such as credit card numbers, pin numbers, mother's maiden name, my social security number and thing like that. I knew right away that it was a Phishing site and there does not seem to be any way I can get rid of this evil situation. Please help if you can. I am at wits end and don't know what to do next. Thanks.

I'm afraid that this post is going to be critical of eBay support, but it is meant to try to improve the system and raise awareness. I received an email which appeared to come from eBay in Italy (ebay.it), written in Italian, with the text being: -----begin text of email----- Caro Cliente, Cliente eBay "nascar-stuff" ha lasciato un messaggio in merito item #29875211762 Vedi la controversia thread per rispondere: http://signin.ebay.it.xxxxxxxxxxxx/ws/index.html?eBayISAPI.dll? Grazie, eBay.it servizi@ebay.it -----end text of email----- (For your safety I have deleted part of the malicious URL. The part showing as "xxxxxxxxx" was actually "verifica.com"). Since the URL was obviously fabricated to look like a valid eBay URL (it begins with "signin.ebay.it"), I could tell this was a "phish" even though I do not read Italian. I forwarded the email, along with a copy/paste of the "raw text" version with full headers, to spoof@ebay,com. I was greatly surprised to get a response back from "eBay Customer Support" saying that the email I sent them really did come from eBay! Part of their response was: -----begin eBay response----- Thank you for writing eBay in regard to an email in another language which you have received and that you are not certain was sent to you by the site. We have checked this email and it appears that it was sent by eBay. Unfortunately, on isolated occasions, eBay members may receive messages from eBay in another language. We are working hard to resolve this problem as soon as possible and we apologize for any confusion. -----end eBay response----- I am very disappointed that the folks at eBay who handle reported phishing emails can make such a huge mistake. Not only was the referenced URL later confirmed by Firefox and other organizations as malicious, the full headers show clearly that the email never touched any part of the eBay organization. I wrote back to eBay Customer Support asking for a further explanation (Friday), but have received no response. The moral seems to be that you cannot even count on eBay support to help you identify a spoof or phish email. I would welcome a comment from eBay concerning this. Bill Halberstadt Newark, DE

A few reports began surfacing late last week that eBay sellers were sending packages to the wrong users due to an apparent glitch. PowerSeller Evan Prytherch said he bought a toner cartridge from another eBay seller using Buy It Now and using eBay's PayPal payment service. He said he was surprised to receive a call from a person he had formerly sold something to who had received his package in error. "It's a potentially very, very serious PayPal issue with a lot of very nasty ramifications," Prytherch said, adding that he wouldn't have believed if it had not just happened to him. PayPal spokesperson Sara Gorman said the shipping team has been working on the problem over the last day or so. She said there would be no announcement made to the eBay System Announcement board because it affected such a small percentage of sellers. "We are going to work with the affected users individually." Gorman was referring to users who contacted PayPal or posted on the PayPal board. She could not say whether PayPal would actually send an email to every user affected by the problem. One buyer affected was Ann Farmer, who had filed a class-action lawsuit against eBay in April (Link). She told AuctionBytes late last week that her daughter had received packages at her home in another town that were supposed to go to Farmer. And when she subsequently tried to pay for several additional eBay purchases, her daughter's address showed as the ship-to address, and she was unable to change it. On September 3rd, a user posting on eBay's PayPal discussion board under the User ID mad_monkey_inc wrote, "Was going through my recent payment transactions and noticed that the last 4 had a ship to address that was not mine. The weirdest part is that the new address is confirmed. I have talked to Paypal service center and they are currently working on the problem, but they claimed the new address was being forwarded to them by ebay." Another user responded to the thread citing the same problem (Link). When asked if there was a pattern to the glitch, Gorman said she did not know. PayPal is focused on getting the issue fixed, she said. Asked whether sellers who might take a hit in their Feedback ratings could get resulting neutrals and negatives removed, Gorman said PayPal would work with eBay on that and "do whatever we can to work with users individually." From a wikipedia article: PayPal is an e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet. Bank status In the United States, PayPal is licensed as a money transmitter on a state-by-state basis.[14] PayPal is not classified as a bank in the United States, though the company is subject to some of the rules and regulations governing the financial industry including Regulation E consumer protections and the USA PATRIOT Act.

The statistic called “number of bids” was eliminated from the new Mt EBAY This is terribly important and needs to come back into the My eBay page Many of us sellers use it to track success and sales volume Also why hasn’t that horrible ORANGE background color softened. I need sunglasses- Why can’t you pick a nice softer color like mint green, yellow chiffon, mild peach, or even a light rose But Astrobright Cosmic ORANGE is horrible. Also the icons for items shipped, paid, etc have gotten way too small and disappear into that sea of Orange gunk Also the sub-totalled dollar value of each bidder used to be underlined and linked directly to the view “Order Details” This now takes an extra step and slows down the shipping process. Also you can’t get “order details” which contains the shipping address can’t be viewed unless paypal is initiated. The new My eBay is one of the worst features ever been introduced by eBay. I’ve held off listing a couple hundred items waiting for the new “Corrected” My eBay would be available. Can’t you fix some of these suggestions you must have gotten from eBay members. Please get rid of the sea of ORANGE.

Hi again mamabear2409, If you need a dress or outfit for your occasion, I would suggest consider searching for it from another seller. By thoroughly reading auction pages, you will know the accepted payment methods of a seller, as well as other pertinent information. Do this before you bid/buy. Be sure that the seller has a PayPal account in the future. You are better protected this way. __________________________ It is not eBay in itself, but the members here who make this place productive, fun and worthwhile. __________________________

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! There is a website called BidEarn dot com. They claim that you can sign up with them, then go to Ebay THOUGH their website and, when you then make a purchase of any kind, they will give a small % of the sale back to you. I made the mistake of creating the same security question that I use for Ebay. Only 3 days after I signed up with BidEarn, I found an item for sale on my Ebay account that I did not list!!! All I know is that this is the only way someone could get access to my account. I would say that with 99.9999% certainty - BIDEARN IS A SCAM SITE!! They are absolutely NOT affiliated with Ebay!! Do not even bother to sign up you will find yourself in a big mess or at least you will not get the money that is promised to you. I hope this helps some good Ebayers to avoid trouble!! -Catfoodbuyer
