Re: Help with bidding, I am new to board so hope in the right place

No one, including the seller, can see your max bid. The automatic bidding program will only take enough of the late bidders max bid to go one bid increment over your max. If that person had not bid more than you did, you would have won.
Read here about proxy bidding:

Look at it this way. If you are entering the maximum you want to pay, you haven't lost anything. The other person is paying more that you are willing to.

thank you Radine, I would have changed my max bid but I did that once to early and locked myself in to that bid for a week only to loose it in the end. Oh well you are right it might have been more than I wanted to pay but I could have come up with the dollar.. :) Someone told me that some people have a special program that snipes the bid and they can never be beat. Again thanks for your help but after serveral weeks of never winning anything I am beginning to think this is not for me.

Welcome.

There is no way you can react quickly enough to the last second bidder who values the widget higher than you do.

It is better to place one bid, at the absolute highest amount you want to pay, and leave it to eBay automatic bidding to bid for you. They can place a bid in the last millisecond up to your maximum.

If you find a widget that you want, decide the absolute maximum you want to pay, deduct the shipping & handling and the amount left is your bid amount.

eBay will only use what is needed to keep you ahead of any other bidders until the auction ends or until your maximum is beaten by another bidder. Radine gave you the link to the help page to read about Automatic Bidding.

Good Luck.

You can place as many higher $$$ amount bids as you want, you are not locked in to one bid and amount.

There are sniping programs, but they are not guaranteed to place your bid. You also have to give them your eBay id and password.

You don't know how much over your bid the winner had placed as his bid, it may have been more than $1, but that was all that was needed to outbid you and win the widget.

sparklecrow, it is a little discouraging to lose at the last second like that, but just think how exciting it would be if you won! You will. But I warn you, you can quickly become addicted to eBay. The more you look around, the more you will find out. The more you try, the better you will get at winning what you want.
Hang in there.

Someone told me that some people have a special program that snipes the bid and they can never be beat.

There are services that place the last-minute bid for somebody, but only you the bidder can choose the amount of your max bid. I can beat a sniper-service manually, by entering a bid with 1 second left, but if you told the service to bid higher, or if you placed a higher bid 4 days before my 1-second snipe, you'll beat me everytime!

It's not the fastest or the lastest bid, it's the highest. :)

And then in a blunter tone... if you're not winning, you're just not bidding high enough! Plain & simple.

Click on my feedback. Then click "feedback as a buyer". I'm not rich, but I can win plenty of things obviously, within my budget, no fancy tricks, it's do-able.

Oh, duh, some of those may be BINs, Buy-It-Nows. Those are real easy to win! ;)

Do those of you that have been around for awhile recommend BIN's for newbies, just to get familiar with how things work, even if there is no bidding taking place, but just for some experience?

You mean as experience in buying? Sure, why not? If you find something at a price you like, buy it now speeds everything up. You buy, you pay, you get your item.
Whichever way you want to buy, do take the time to check a seller's feedback comments. Buying something breakable? Does the seller have feedback praising packaging? And so on.

If you mean as a seller, the buy it now option is not available to you until you have some experience unless you open a store, which I would NOT recommend until you have some experience.

Gee, that upside down kitty that looks like a possum at first glance certainly is familiar.

That is a good point Kalico. I would say a qualified yes, IMO

Whilst it wouldn't help them to learn about bidding it would certainly help with familiarization of the completion of purchase activity.

BIN (Buy it Now) can sometimes require an immediate payment, so the newbie would need to have their PayPal account up and running to avoid disappointment, as with this type of BIN the item is not yours until the payment is complete.

I think you are correct Radine. The person we are alluding to has apologized in this forum, (you may have missed it).

IMHO she is welcome.
