TERMS

A Discussion Board is a web page containing a list of discussions. You can click on any of the discussion links to read what other eBay members have posted.

To view a complete list of all the available discussion boards, click "Community" in the bar at the top of any eBay page, and then on "Discussion Boards" inside the Talk stamp; or, clicking on the following link will pop-up another window.

Link

A Discussion is a collection of messages on the same topic. Discussions are also known as "threads."

A Post is a message made to a discussion by a member who is logged on.

indicates a new discussion that you have not viewed before

indicates a discussion that has been updated with new messages since your last visit

indicates a discussion where a member of the eBay Staff has posted a message

DISCUSSION BOARD LOGIN

The first thing you should do when you visit a discussion board is log into the system. When you're logged in, the system will keep track of the discussions and messages that you've viewed. Later, when you return to a discussion that you've viewed, the system will show you new messages, and save you time by not displaying messages that you've read.

The discussion board login process is separate from the regular Sign In process. Please log into the discussion boards even if you've signed into the eBay site.

HOW TO LOGIN:

There are two ways to login on the boards.
1) You can click on the blue "Go to log in" link in the purple header near the top of the page
2) You can click on the button near the bottom of the page

If you do not have an eBay User ID, please register here.

You can tell if you are logged in by looking in the purple header under the "Go to log in" link, it will say "currently logged in as USER ID".

DISCUSSIONS

If you're new to the Discussion boards, it is always advisable to "lurk" for a while before posting. This means you should read through the list of discussions to see if your topic is already being discussed. Since each discussion board is often the setting of a community of regular posters, it is also a good idea to get a sense of the local practices. Also, if you would like to post a general eBay question, and need a fast answer, the Answer Center is the place for you.

HOW TO SEE MORE DISCUSSIONS:

At the top and bottom of the "List of Topics", you can click on the button to move through the list or the button to go to the last page of topics.

You can also click on the white buttons at the bottom of the page to jump forward or backward in the list of topics.

HOW TO START A NEW DISCUSSION

Once at the board where you wish to start a new discussion, click the button at the bottom of the page. You must be logged in to see this button.

HOW TO LOCATE YOUR DISCUSSION

If you add a new discussion to a board, the subject line will appear in the list of topics. You can look through the list of topics and click on the link with your subject line. If you don't see your discussion on the first page, you may need to advance to the next page by clicking on the button. If you can not find your discussion this way, you can do a general search for all the posts that you've made in the past. To Search, click on the button at the bottom of the board, and enter your Username or User ID.

MESSAGES

HOW TO NAVIGATE THROUGH A DISCUSSION:

To advance to the next page of messages, click the button at the top of the first post on your list.

To get to the end of a discussion to view the most recent messages, click the button at the top of the first post on your list.

To get to the beginning of a discussion, click the button at the top of the first post on your list.

To scroll backward a page of posts, click the button on the top of the first post on your list.

To Search, click on the button. It will take you to a page that allows you to search by terms, date range and User ID.

HOW TO POST A NEW MESSAGE:

Log on and scroll down to the bottom of the page in a discussion. If you don't see a text box to enter your message, click the button. Type your message into the text box. If you want to add special formatting such as bold, italics, bullets, etc. or insert links or images, you can use regular HTML tags as you're typing it in. When you are ready, click the grey 'post message' button below the text box where you've been typing. The page will reload and your message will appear with the others.

CHECK SPELLING AND PREVIEW FEATURES

Prior to posting your message you might want to check your message over for spelling or HTML errors. Click on the grey 'Check Spelling' button under the text box where you've been typing to check the spelling of your post. You can also look at your post before it goes live by clicking on the grey "Preview" button under the text box.

HOW TO POST IMAGES, LINKS AND SIMPLE HTML COMMANDS

For a detailed explanation, please click here to read a special tutorial created by an eBay member.

ANSWER CENTER

If you would like to post a general eBay question, and need a fast answer, the Answer Center is the place for you. The Answer Center forums differ from the Discussion Boards in that they are designed specifically to allow members to answer other member's questions.

Click here to read a list of frequently asked questions about the Answer Center.

Click here to view the list of Answer Center forums.

REPORTING BOARD VIOLATIONS

HOW TO REPORT A POST THAT VIOLATES THE BOARD USAGE POLICIES

If you see a post that violates the board usage policies such as a post containing vulgarity or profanity, something that is illegal or obscene or pornographic or if someone has posted personal information about another member please click on the button and a board monitor will remove the post.

Your gif files for the buttons are missing from this page with no alternate text. Very hard to read this way.

I'm new at this but I was trying to learn how to sell on Ebay, I asked for imformation on how to sell on Ebay you send me to www.surplusalert.com , they say this is free if you login and check out what they have for sale at a discount ,so I go and check out there stuff, they say in order to start a membership I have to purchase at least 1 item I didn't see any thing I wanted so I closed that window. Now I get charged $29.95 for a membership on my debit card with out me knowing till I get my monthly statement. What happened to free? This is a bad experience for me . Any way how do I get out of this, and find some help to start selling on Ebay ?

Hi I am new to all of this ebay stuff to and I understand that you are upset about the fee I started a few weeks ago as a buyer and two days ago I opened a store with no Idea what I was doing. What I found out was that you really have to take your time and read everything and make sure you get the tool bar becase you can end up on a site that is not even ebay. They have a security bar that tells you if the site is good or not. And you have to really read everything because something are not free. But I have to say two weeks ago I had no clue and now I am having the time of my life give it a chance and you will to it takes time. Now that I am learning what I am doing I bought a store and did not even know how to stock it lol it took me days and it still is not right but I will get it and some day someone just might stop bye.
So I hope your experience gets better I know mine is.:)

How To Use The eBay Discussion Boards

Mar 10, 2005 7:45 AM
Hello - I am fairly new to ebay and seem to have a problem with sellers posting "unpaid item" when I have already paid. The latest is an item I paid for and it arrived broken. I filed for the insurance with USPS. The seller was helpful and sent the insurance info, although it was insured for less than I paid. The bottom line is... He has filed an unpaid item dispute saying we agreed not to complete the transaction. How is it not complete? He got paid, I am the one out of the money and the item. He was helpful and I don't want to reply that I don't agree until I understand this process. The dispute says ii is not a strike, but still it looks bad to me. I care about my rep on ebay....
Also, how do I get a strike removed when I paid for the item. The seller keeps telling me not to worry, it was a mistake and they will take care of removing it. It is still there. Who runs ebay anyway???? Can we ever talk to a live person? Sorry so long. Thanks 4860lori
