Your bid can only go as high as the current bid if no one bids against you. You cannot bid up an item all by yourself.

Unless you are talking about entering a bid hoping you don't win, which would be .... well ... ummmm.... don't do that.

Wow. Of course, you can bid as high as you want on whatever you want, but not for the purpose of pumping up the price just to do somebody a favor! Regardless of your intentions, eBay may very well see that as "shill bidding". I am not suggesting that is your intention, or that you even know what that is, so here is a definition from eBay:

Shill bidding is bidding that artificially increases an item’s price or desirability. It’s also bidding by the people the seller knows—including family members, roommates, or employee—who could have certain information about the item that other members aren’t aware of. To make sure no one gets an unfair advantage, we don’t allow shill bidding on eBay.

akb. if you want to be nice to a seller, only bid on what you really want and if you win pay right away. Then when your widget arrives and everything is satisfactory
leave your seller positive feedback and fives on their stars.
