New Feature: Online Postage – Input Wanted

Feb 13, 2004 10:30 PM
Hi Everyone,

We are pleased to announce a new feature that will enable you to print U.S. Postal Service shipping labels with Delivery Confirmation™ and pay for postage from your PayPal account.

Some of the features are:
  • Print from Your Computer: You can print shipping labels with postage and Delivery Confirmation conveniently on your printer. Print postage with or without postage amount shown. If you use eBay's Online Postage together with the U.S. Postal Service's Free Carrier Pick-up service, you can save a trip to the post office.

  • Nothing to Download : All you need is a Web browser and a high quality ink-jet or laser printer.

  • Pre-populate buyer addresses: Let eBay automatically fill in the buyer's shipping address and package information when you print shipping labels online.

  • Pay with PayPal: Pay for your postage or shipping label using PayPal.

  • Track Shipments Online: You and your buyers can track the shipment status directly in My eBay or the View Item page.

  • Track Expenses : You can keep track of all your shipping expenses directly on PayPal.

  • No Monthly Fee : eBay doesn't charge a monthly fee.

How to use feature:
  1. After an item has sold, you can print a shipping label by clicking on the “Print Shipping Label” button in My eBay.

  2. You will be taken to PayPal and asked to login to their account.

  3. Once logged in, enter the package information such as weight and size.

  4. Once you have confirmed your package information, your shipping label will be displayed in a pop-up window. Please make sure to disable any pop-up blocker on your computer.

  5. You can print the shipping label with postage by clicking on the “Print Label” button in the pop-up browser window.

Note: If for any reason you need to reprint the label, simply click the “Reprint Label” link on the PayPal transaction details page.

You said no monthly fee, so is it weekly?

shoe,

I know. I was just joking because the eBay employee said "no monthly fee" and in case you haven't noticed, eBay doesn't give too much away for free.

New Feature: Online Postage – Input Wanted

Please feel free to give us your input!

Last week's announcement stated: "...and sellers will not be required to offer PayPal in their listings to use this product."

What we got though, was another example of putting the interests of PayPal above the global interests of eBay. It's no longer possible for sellers to us the shipping center for any auction and pay for their shipping with their PayPal payments. Nor can buyers use it to return items.

We all know that using delivery confirmations with verified addresses speeds up delivery and dramatically decreases the incidence of "lost" shipments. It's in eBay's interest to encourage sellers to use an online verifiable form of shipment with proper labels for all auction sales to minimize these problems. We also know how often buyers fail to use D/C for returns. Instead of trying to force everyone to use PayPal as the exclusive form of payment, EBay should be trying to get sellers (and buyers) to use the PayPal shipping center whether or not the payment was made using PayPal.

The real question is :

WHY DOESN'T EBAY LET US PAY FOR THE POSTAGE THE SAME WAY WE PAY EBAY FEES RATHER THAN USE PAYPAL?

Hi ozzie3,

During the development of this feature, we surveyed over 1700 sellers. A majority of the sellers indicated that they prefer to have an integrated solution on PayPal. It allows us to provide you with an account history for all your transactions including payments from your buyers.

In addition, the postage amount is deducted from your account when you print the label. We are unable to bill you at the end of the month like the eBay fees.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers,

Ethan

2.5 questions:

Do buyers receive a notification that the label has been printed along with the DC #?

Is there a way that I as a seller can turn off the "You created a shipping label with PayPal Shipping!" email? I know I did, I just made it. I get enough emails as it is. It would be good info for the buyer though.

Reguarding billing, something needs to be done. To have a PayPal transaction notice for each label is just insane. I'll have to wade through tons of lines of transactions just to get to the important ones. Postage should be charged per session or in batches or something.

Hi ibiddedtowin,

Yes. A shipment notification email will be automatically sent to both you and the buyer with the Delivery Confirmation number.

I will take your feedback back to the rest of the team for their consideration.

Thank you.

Is there an address verification feature? I like to get the address verified and add the zip+4, because I think it speeds up the shipping process, and if the address changes somewhat when it is verified, does it still qualify as a confirmed address?

Would you please address the conflict between what eBay announced and released service? The announcement cited above specifically said that PayPal would not be required as a payment type. Sellers who were using the UPS service before are rather upset about the new restriction.
