Package returned to sender/seller/me due to change of address.

Nov 6, 2009 2:38 PM
Looking for insight and advice!

I received a returned package that I had shipped Priority almost 2 weeks ago. I shipped to the confirmed address given by PayPal. The USPS label says "address forward time expired- rtn to sender". I am wondering what to do about this. I'm assuming the buyer has moved and didn't bother changing their shipping address on PayPal. I have yet to contact the buyer, but I wondering if it is okay to ship to a non-confirmed address and whether or not I can ask for the buyer to pay a second shipping fee. It might be easier to just refund the purchase price (minus shipping). Thanks for your help.

Do not contact the buyer.

Sell the item again in about two months.

If you contact the Buyer and they don't want to pay any more for shipping,
they can file INR with PayPal and get a FULL refund,
Item Price + what they paid for shipping/handling.

So even though it is their mistake,
why would they want to pay any additional for the shipping?

I know. I'm aware no one would want to pay for shipping twice...It just seems fair since it was their mistake to not update their shipping address. I wonder if Paypal will rule in favor of the buyer if I show proof of shipment to the Paypal confirmed address.

Anything short of DC, Delivery Confirmation,
showing the package was delivered to the zip code on the transaction page and the Buyer will win the FULL refund.

PayPal requires online viewable proof of delivery.

Have you gone into the PayPal transaction and verified you did indeed use the right address and not the address provided by PayPal?

We have had this occur a couple of times and on both occasions, the buyer was apologetic and paid the actual cost of reshipping the item a second time.

On the one occasion that they never replied back, we followed SAM's advice in post #1, although we did wait 90 days before putting it back into inventory.

You can do that, but as far as PP is concerned buyer gets all of his money back if the item is not received.
Buyer must ask for it though.

I’ve had this happen several times over the years. Let them know it came back and why. I scanned the top of the package and sent with the email asking what they wanted to do.
Every time they have agreed to pay the postage minus S&H. You can send a invoice for postage through PayPal. Buyers appreciated the extra effort and it was reflected in the feedback they left. Sure there is a chance they will file a INR claim but odds are they want the item. Remember you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

And that's fine, if you are trying to catch flies.

Ya, I guess I’m that old. I still believe being nice and not assuming the worse equals better customer service whether the seller or buyer be.
