"Required Insurance" and "Buyer Protection Plan" paid 4 by SELLERS

Jan 22, 2009 10:59 AM
Hello Sellers, the misuse of power by this organization is unbelievable, as well as dispicable. We offer free insurance, and used to have "optional" insurance. However, after losing $45 + 12% of that to Final Value Fee + Listing Fees, + PayPal %, to a Buyer in the UK, who we warned that cheap ship has no indemnity. The item was double boxed, and packed by USPS Standards. We've sold many of the item, & never had one break. Are we all aware of exactly what this "Buyer Protection Policy" means? Any Buyer can get Buyer's Remorse, break or damage the item, then open a Not as Described Dispute through PayPal, and get ALL their money back, including shipping. The Seller will not win the Dispute, unless the Buyer does not return the item w/in the time frame. Don't know how U all feel, but we think it absolutely outrageous. You are out the cost of the item, and all the fees are non refundable. We added the "Required" actual cost of USPS Insurance to our higher priced goods, and all was well. Now, I had a Buyer who was able to buy w/out paying for Insurance. ebay says that's right--that "Required" insurance is still FREE if we're giving Free Shipping. Let's see, Free shipping, 12% Final value Fees, plus the rest. This is a no win situation. How sad that one can only lose money selling on ebay, thus reducing the taxes you pay the IRS IF you are filing jointly with someone who actually MAKES money. Let's change the name to "Big Brother", and get it over with. In addition, we will probably be "punished" in some way for having the gall to shout about this:)

You can build the cost of insurance into your item price anytime you like. Since you stated you have shipped many without breaking just up your item cost 50 cents or whatever amount it takes to cover average loss and self insure.

"but we think it absolutely outrageous" I think it outrageous that you would accuse your buyers of breaking items and actually think that it is not YOUR responsibility to make sure the item gets to the buyer in one piece. Insurance is for you, not your buyers.

"Required Insurance" and "Buyer Protection Plan" paid 4 by SELLERS

Jan 22, 2009 4:23 PM
Hi- yes, we could up the price. But then the item might not sell. In these economic times, people are very careful in most instances. There is also the point that ebay is changing policies without notice, or with notice that you wouldn't notice, until u get the shaft. We already give enough "Free"; just how far does it have to go. To the Member upset that we would accuse a Buyer of breaking or damaging an item: you may have no idea the things Members will try to get away with. It is quite naive to think that Buyers are honest. "Buyer's Remorse" is widespread. Now the Protection Plan will save them when the Seller has a no return policy. It is also uninformed to say that insurance is not for the Buyer. Of course it is. A Seller is supposed to send the USPS document to the Buyer, so they can get their money back. I'd never heard of this outrageous misuse of Insurance claims- that Sellers are turning in claims, and pocketing the money. THEY are the cause of this "Protection" bull honky. Honest Sellers would NEVER do this. So now you've accused Sellers who sell insurance as dishonest. So many people don't know what really goes on in ebay. Especially Buyers, and that is not a criticism. People just don't have time to learn all the rules and loop holes, and it's a good thing for ebay.

Good Grief! You have this in your auctions we cannot be responsible for uninsured items.

'Buyer Protection' will be the death of eBay
just buy, get Buyer's Remorse, break it, file an NAD Dispute with PPal,
get all your $$ back, shaft Seller out of cost of item, plus the 12% Final Value Fee,
plus the listing fees. Sellers are going to drop like flies, but who will even care?

You are telling buyers right there how to do the scamming!

onaleejane,

You should maximize your shipping and handling charges to include funding to cover claims of non delivery or not as described.

How much money would you have in your pocket right now if you had never paid for carrier insurance? I bet it would cover the losses you are complaining about and then some.

Now the Protection Plan will save them when the Seller has a no return policy.

The buyer protection policy has been around for a long time. It is not new. And it does not matter whether the seller has a stated return policy or not, if you accept PayPal you play by their rules that trump your terms.

People just don't have time to learn all the rules and loop holes

Make the time. Knowing the policies might make the difference between loss and profit. While it may be easier to blame eBay for your own ignorance of the rules and requirements, it is more profitable to take responsibility for yourself and learn what you need to know to stay in business.

OP, if you don't like eBay or PayPal, you do have other options as to where to sell. PayPal's Buyer Protection has been around for years. Also, the Announcement Board is your friend.

OP have you heard the phrase "ignorance of the law is not a defense"? Same applies here.

Perhaps you can quote the law that the OP was referring to in the posting!
